Questionable Officiating Oregon Ducks vs. Maryland: Unsportsmanlike Conduct After Dillon Gabriel Hit

The Oregon Ducks committed 12 penalties for 95 penalty yards in a 39-18 win over the Maryland Terrapins, including a questionable pass interference call by the officials in the first quarter. Then after a possible late hit on quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Oregon offensive lineman Nishad Strother retaliated and pushed the Maryland defender. That turned into a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct call.

7 major takeaways from Oregon Ducks monotonous win over Maryland Terrapins

With the No. 1 team in the nation on the sideline, and just two victories separating them and a clinched spot in the Big Ten title game, you would have thought fans were preparing to watch an early-September non-conference game against Portland State, rather than a highly-impactful conference showdown.

That’s just one of the many downsides to conference realignment, where we get these lackluster matchups against someone like Maryland, whom Oregon had zero history against before, and not much reason to pick up the energy early on.

Despite the lack of juice, the Ducks got the job done against Maryland in a rather monotonous manner, winning 39-18. It featured a slow start, a thrilling second quarter, a broken record from Dillon Gabriel, a couple of trick plays, and a turnover-happy defense.

Here are some of my biggest takeaways from the victory:
