Stewart Mandel's Preseason 2025 Ranking: Penn State is No. 1?

Recommended Posts

Wow.  I did not see that coming!

I am fine with where he puts Oregon, because we lose so much, and have to "prove it."

1. Penn State

2. Texas

3. Notre Dame

4. LSU

5. Clemson

6. Ohio State

7. Georgia

8. Oregon

9. Arizona State  (Wow! Dilly!)

10. BYU

I don't see Colorado. But ASU without Skattebo at No.9? Leonard is a Sr. at Nore Dame, but maybe he'll still be there. This is where USC usually shows up, good job, Mandel.

Stewart, often wrong but never in doubt.

WE'RE NO. 3 in the final AP Poll with wins over No. 1 Ohio State, No. 5 Penn State, No. 8 Boise State, and Number 16. Illinois.

The 2024-25 college football season came to an end Monday night with Ohio State defeating Notre Dame, 34-23, in the College Football Playoff championship game.

BOISE at No. 8? Best win: L to No. 3 OBD and L to No. 5 Penn State.

1. PENN STATE - Warren is gone. No WR caught a pass vs. Notre Dame and the two WRs coming in from the portal are OK, not special. 3-0 to start: Nevada, Florida International, and Villanova OOC.

Week 5 - Oregon is a 3.5 favorite playing in Happy Valley.

Week 10. PSU plays Ohio State in Columbus and faces Indiana at home in Week 11. Also plays at Iowa and at a Michigan State team that always gives PSU trouble.

Isn't James Franklin still at the PSU helm?

TEXAS - Is there anyone left in Austin for Arch Manning to play ball with? Texas gets a repeat of an easy but for a trip to Athens, SEC schedule but the opener at Ohio State will be taxing.

NOTRE DAME - Much more difficult schedule in 2025 and who replaces Riley Leonard at QB?

LSU - Opens at Clemson in Clemson, SC, and not at a neutral site. Games at Ole Miss, Bama, and Oklahoma and vs. A+M and South Carolina. And Brian 'I'll never get to a title game at Notre Dame' Kelly is still in charge.

Clemson is too high. UGA and tOSU are too low. And two B12 teams in the top 10?

OBD. If Dante is ready to start, looking at the schedule I see a ceiling of 12-0 and a floor of 10-2.

247 Sports Too Early T25 - 1. Texas/ 2. Ohio State/ 3. Georgia/ 4. OBD

7. Penn State/ 19. Indiana/ 20. Illinois/ 21. Michigan/ 23. Nebraska.

Athlon - 1. Ohio State/ 2. Texas/ 3. Georgia/ 4. Penn State/ 5. Notre Dame/ 6. OBD

18. Indiana/ 21. Illinois/ 22. Michigan

Citrus Bowl - Illinois 21 - South Carolina 17 - 18 staters return for Illinois, 12 of 14 B1G honorees return. 247 has the Gamecocks No. 12, eight spots above Illinois. Athlon has South Carolina No. 12., nine spots above the Illini.

Two titles in a row for the B1G but the SEC still receives the ranking benefit of the doubt.

I've heard PSU returns nearly their entire team. Should be a significant advantage . . . an intangible one that often gets overlooked.

Penn State does lose some names, probably their biggest stars, Warren on offense, Carter on defense, but both RB's are back, and the QB. Meanwhile, it's looking good for OBD, but 19 of 22 starters are gone. I like predictions that have Oregon around 6-10.
