Experience Reigns: Oregon returns 11 position players from last year that helped the Ducks advance to the Super-Regionals, and eight of them started at least 35 games. Fabulous Freshmen Return: Ryan Cooney (Portland, Jesuit) set a freshman record for home runs at shortstop until Maddox Molony (Springfield, Thurston) returned from injury, won the position and set a new freshman record for home runs with 10, and batted .315 for the year to be the first positional player at Oregon to become All-Pac-12 as a freshman. Charles Fischer Administrator No. 3 Share Posted February 13 Former Top-100 talent Mason Neville from Las Vegas, struggled to hit while at Arkansas, and transferred to Oregon last year. His hitting woes continued at first for the Ducks, and then in the final third of the season--nobody was hotter at the plate. He finished second on the time with 16 homers, and batted .318 when he became a starter in the outfield for the final 23 games of the season. He moved to the leadoff batting spot in the Playoffs, and batted .333 along with three stolen bases. He is very fast, and is slated to start at center field. Four transferred from 4-year colleges, and two transferred from JCs with notable reputations. Oregon will have nine true freshmen pitchers, which includes star Will Sanford, but also the top HS pitcher in Nebraska, Michael Meckna. Sam Boyle transferred to Oregon; can you blame him? Duckman60 No. 9 Share Posted February 14 Really confused about the Men's baseball team and the schedule maker. The softball team plays it's first 16 games down south and already has played 5 games. The baseball team has its first 12 games at home in February! Why? Normally teams go south the first part of the season to make sure they get games in. There is a possibility that Oregon only plays a few of their first 12 games. Seems really odd to me. Maybe because of our new Big10 schedule where they will have to travel a lot they had cut back on spring travel, that would be a real disservice to the team. I have three theories as to why we are not, and I think you hit on the first one; we have some significant travel trips, and Waz is trying to balance it out. A second reason, I believe, is that we and Washington blend into the B1G without an issue in terms of playing temperature conditions. We are both Cold-Weather teams, and Oregon State has shown that a cold-weather team can win a 'Natty in Baseball, thus the transition for us will not be much in terms of temperature. I see that our first opponent (Toledo) is also from a cold-weather area, and our next series is also against Rhode Island. I think Waz is embracing what we are, and scheduling teams we can beat, but also have done well in their conferences for our RPI. I also note that A) of the top projected teams in the B1G, three of the top five are from the former Pac-12 teams, (Oregon, UCLA and USC) and we play three of the other projected top four, thus....we may have got hosed with conference scheduling. I believe there is a third reason; Oregon is preseason ranked No. 12, the highest ever for Waz, and for a very long time. Waz is trying to build a bigger fan base, and get more fans to PK Park, and perhaps he is trying to capitalize on the high preseason ranking to get fans to come? Still a tough draw with snow and ice yesterday, and very cold temperatures projected for today. I checked the schedule's for the other Big Ten teams and all of them are playing games in warm, sunny weather in the south. Here's a look at where their at... Illinois first 9 games are on the road in Texas and Nevada Indiana first 4 road games are on the road, one at home, 3 on the road, one at home, 4 on the road. What a disaster! These games are played in Arizona, North Carolina and Florida. Iowa ten road games in Florida and Texas Maryland ten road games in North and South Carolina Michigan 16 road games in Puerto Rico, Texas and California Michigan State 15 road games in North Carolina, Texas and South Carolina Minnesota nine road games in Texas Nebraska ten road games in Texas, Arizona and Louisiana Northwestern 14 road games in California, North and South Carolina Ohio State nine road games in Arizona, Florida and Texas Penn State ten road games in Puerto Rico and Virginia Purdue 12 road games in Texas and North Carolina Rutgers ten road games in Georgia, Arizona and South Carolina UCLA 13 'road' games in California and Texas. One difference between us and the teams out east is that we don't really deal with snow (we had a day of it, but that's it), all of those states deal with snow during this time of the year. Washington is the comparable team to us, and it is interesting to see them playing so many road games compared to us. I really would have wanted to see us play a Big 12 or a SEC opponent at least once. Feels like a cupcake schedule, but maybe it's a way to develop confidence in the pitching staff. Who knows? Playing No. 7 Oregon State four times will not be easy, and when you add Washington, UCLA, and USC...we still have four former Pac-12 teams on the schedule.
