Charles Fischer Administrator No. 2 Share Posted February 24 Yes, this No. 11 is on the D1Baseball rankings, the one I follow the most over the years. Although Baseball America has us at No. 19, and that might be closer to reality for us at the moment. This team has a TON of upside with the pitchers, and hitting with this veteran group. I never thought I'd see it, but Jacob Walsh is making better choices at the plate, and doing better with his weakness, the low curve ball. Coming back for his senior year and learning this might really change his draft status and MLB trajectory. 1 Mr. FishDuck
Charles Fischer Administrator No. 3 Share Posted February 24 The B1G has 14 Baseball teams among the 18 in the conference. Think of it...only Oregon is ranked from a Super-Conference? Just goes to show how Oregon will bring more glory to the conference, and hence our rightful share of the revenue. Mr. FishDuck
spartan2785 No. 4 Share Posted February 24 Charles while I would love to think that the B1G will care about baseball, they don't seem to have ever really cared in the past since the conference has been horrible in baseball forever. I honestly think they might care more about Wrestling and Hockey (nothing wrong with those sports btw). Baseball and Softball are the only things that I'm kind of bummed out about when it comes to moving to this conference. The Pac-12 wasn't as good as it used to be in Baseball but it was still fun when a good Stanford, Zona, or ASU came to play. I just don't get excited about Ohio St or Minnesota baseball. I'm guessing we'll be pretty dominant in Baseball and T&F.

I agree with you, as I am often stunned at the superb coverage on B1G+ of Wrestling, Hockey....and Lacrosse! The former Pac-12 teams are going to complement the B1G, by bringing our power to sports they have been traditionally weak at. Besides Baseball, the four former Pac-12 schools will DOMINATE in softball, and I am OK with this as we can schedule non-conference to build our RPI, and have enough credibility before joining the B1G to host our own regional if we win as much as before. We are cold-weather teams, and always have been, thus Oregon fits in fine. Mason Neville hit a stunning home run this last weekend in the driving rain. That's a Duck! HDuck Author No. 8 Share Posted February 24 A big influence affecting college baseball that began about 1960's was length of season which in the early years didn't start until April, then mid-March. Now games are being played in February. 1966 Ohio State champs were 19-5-1 then played 10 games in the "regional" and Omaha to claim the title with 27-6-1. By 1970, USC champs were 45-13 after Omaha. Tennessee, the 2024 champ was 60-13. Weather, and game experience, started having a big impact on development of teams prior to Omaha. And the kids that loved baseball thought the best place to nurture that love was in a warmer climate.
Charles Fischer Administrator No. 9 Share Posted February 24 That Michigan was in the 'Natty championship games as recent as 2019...points to cold weather teams as "possible" as Oregon State has done three times. Mr. FishDuck
HDuck Author No. 10 Share Posted February 25 Yep, this is what I was responding to.... ".... the conference (B1G) has been horrible in baseball forever. I honestly think they might care more about Wrestling and Hockey (nothing wrong with those sports btw). " Aside from 2019 Michigan, it had been since 1966 Ohio St. 58 years is almost forever in today's short attention span sports. laugh And, wrestling and hockey are indoors.... I suspect in those earlier years of short seasons (i.e. 27-6-1) they weren't going to "pre-season" tournaments in Arizona, Texas, Florida. That 2019 Michigan team played a bunch of games in Florida, S. Carolina and California before it played its first one in Ann Arbor. But, other B1G teams have as well. One since 1966 is still a long time for the B1G.
Nevada Dawg No. 11 Share Posted Sunday at 06:24 AM B1G has sucked forever at baseball. When I lived in Ohio (1969-1973) the Big-10 baseball teams got smoked regularly by teams from the Mid-American Conference and occasionally but noticeably by D-2 and D-3 schools. Early in season, their games were usually on the road down South because it was too darn cold to be playing in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc. Eugene would have been considered a moderate climate by these schools. Charles Fischer Administrator No. 12 Share Posted Sunday at 06:29 AM No matter, because we have enough within our schedule, and we have established a reputation, and will keep winning, and thus I believe we will be fine. Not to mention, that bringing USC, and UCLA to the conference automatically elevates the B1G in baseball a bit. Mr. FishDuck
