Hats Off to the Women's Wisconsin Badgers Ice Hockey team that won its 8th national championship, the most in women's collegiate hockey, with a 4-3 overtime win vs. Ohio State. And hats off to coach Mark Johnson This is also the 8th title for Johnson at Wisconsin where he played his collegiate hockey. Johnson's 655 wins are the most in Women's Hockey D1 history. Mark is 67 years old. He was a key player on the 1980 Miracle on Ice Team that shocked the Russians and then defeated Finland to win a most unexpected and improbable Gold Medal in Lake Placid, New York. Al Michaels, 'Do You Believe in Miracles?' echoes throughout ice hockey history. Johnson played in the NHL before taking the women's head coaching job at his alma mater. In 2024-25 the B1G sends four men's teams, Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State to the tourney. 16 of the 64 teams that play Men's D1 Hockey make the tournament field. Nevada Dawg No. 5 Share Posted Sunday at 05:14 AM I am not really a hockey fan (until the Olympics) but still fondly remember the gritty play of Johnson on the Miracle on Ice team of 1980. And just think guys, here is an NCAA sport in which the SEC poses absolutely no threat. Quite the accomplishment considering PSU went 0-8 in the first eight games of the B1G 2024-25 season. Penn State plays Boston University in a Frozen Four semifinal game. The hockey Final 4 games will be played in St. Louis.
