Autzen Magic No. 1 Share Posted 11 hours ago Portland police chief will no longer officiate Division 1 football games, he says WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM Bob Day last served as a line judge for the Pac-12 in 2023 when he began his role as interim chief for the Police Bureau. This article is about the Portland Chief of Police giving up his side hustle of a college football Line Judge so he can focus on his regular job. He said he made about $4K per game, but that he had to pay all of his expenses (travel, lodging, etc.) That's more than I thought college football officials made. I have maintained for decades, that the college football officiating should be a full time gig and paid accordingly. In my opinion, there is too much money at stake for part-time/side-gig officials. As an aside, I know Bob Day and he is a solid dude.
30Duck Moderator No. 2 Share Posted 11 hours ago This is more ridiculous than the NIL. I remember, for a while I had to take a taxi to a job and the fares pretty much cancelled out my salary. Forget "Pay to Play" Officials have to pay to get to the games?

This is not remotely a political statement, but I've know Bob for about 37 years, and IMHO, Portland won the lottery when he surprisingly chose to come out of retirement and accept the role of Chief. And, Go Ducks!

Travel is not optional... They need to be on the field so enable it! Also if it's a full time job the standard of officiating goes up. Which is what this sport needs.
