Oregon's 2025 transfer portal cycle is their best yet

Oregon's eleven transfer acquisitions marks the lowest tally for Dan Lanning's Ducks since his first year as head coach. Though lower in quantity, they filled all the right needs, and it may just be their best yet.

Where Oregon Football ranks among the best teams of this century

The Oregon Ducks have undoubtedly been one of the best teams in college football over the past few years, routinely near the top of the rankings and in the College Football Playoff mix with Heisman Trophy contenders and dozens of players sent to the NFL draft.

However, the success in Eugene extends far beyond the last few years. According to The Athletic's Stewart Mandel, the Ducks are among the best teams in all of college football when it comes to the 21st century, dating back to 2000.

Mandel recently ranked the top 25 teams of the century, with the Ducks coming in at No. 7 on the list. The top 10 went as follows.

Big Ten coach has high expectations for Oregon Football QB Dante Moore in 2025

In an interview with Athlon Sports Magazine, an anonymous Big Ten coach echoed that sentiment, having this to say about Moore and his early expectations in Eugene.

“They’re pretty hyped on the quarterback [Dante Moore], who they’ve had in the system for a season already, which is a huge advantage," the coach said. "This isn’t modifying your book for a guy you get out of the portal; it’s a talented, developed player who already knows your system. I think that will show early on this season.”

Six schools made postseason in all major sports during 2024-25

Six teams were able to lay claim to having made the postseason in all major college sports. This includes men’s and women’s basketball, football, volleyball, softball and baseball.

To qualify for this list, the school must have been bowl eligible during the college football season. They don’t have to have qualified for the College Football Playoff. Elsewhere, each school must have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of the major sports. In the end, six schools made the final list. Here’s who made the cut:

Five B1G teams, besides OBD, TOSU, and PSU, that could make the PO.

Note, the Nebraska vs. Cincinnati game is being played in Kansas City, not Lincoln, NE.

UW is one of the five and not Michigan? Michigan in 2025 has the easiest or the second-easiest B1G conference schedule. No games against Oregon, Illinois, Indiana, and Penn State. Games against B1G bottom dwellers Purdue, Maryland, and Northwestern should be easy peasy.

OOC at Oklahoma will be tough, and at Nebraska and USC are not gimmes. Seven home games with That Team from Down South visiting Ann Arbor will help the PO cause.

Split against SC and Nebraska, and Michigan should finish 10-2 and in the PO.

AMEN on the game at Penn State. But at Iowa and USC in the top 3 most difficult games in 2025?

How is QB Gronowski transferring from FCS to Iowa going to pan out? I'm not certain that with Mendoza at QB and starters returning on all three levels of the defense, Iowa will be better than Indiana this season.

Both Indiana and OBD are idle in Week 6 before the Hoosiers visit Eugene, with OBD coming off its Week 5 road game at Penn State and Indiana off a Week 5 game at Iowa.

Both Iowa and OBD are idle before the Week 11 game in Iowa City, with OBD playing Wisconsin in Week 9 and Iowa playing Minnesota.

USC should be improved and should finish better than 1-5 in one-score games. However, the penultimate game of the regular season will be played in Autzen Stadium. In 2024, SC was 1-4 on the road. USC will be the second Blue Chip Roster opponent OBD plays in 2025.

I think the ultimate game of the regular season at Washington could be more difficult than playing Iowa in Iowa City and SC at home. In 2024, UW went 6-0 in Husky Stadium, defeating USC and Michigan, a Wolverines team with wins against national champ Ohio State and Alabama, in the process.

UW QB Demond Williams is the real deal, while looking like a piñata against OBD's defense last season (11 sacks!) Williams still threw for over 200 yards, and he played great in UW's one-point bowl loss to Louisville. He is a better athlete than the Hawkeyes and Trojans will put on the field.

Of course, except for the game against the Blue Chip Roster, PSU, this is all a shot in the dark.

Pete Carroll, John McKay, and John Robinson were quality coaches helped by having more talent on the roster than the Other Guys. This is how SC will awaken, cogent recruiting supported by finally well-managed NIL collectives.

SC may have to dump $10 M play-caller Riley to get there, but I think SC will be back as a national player in the next two to three seasons. 1-5 in one-score games in 2024, but two wins over favored SEC teams show that the talent is there.

I hate to say it, but in addition to SC, I expect UW will step up to be one of the better B1G programs.

College football's top RB rooms: Penn State, Notre Dame battle for top spot behind loaded backfields

Several national title contenders boast impressive stables of running backs heading into 2025

3. Oregon

A couple of weeks ago, on the Cover 3 Podcast, we were trying to figure out who the Group of Five Star would be now that Ashton Jeanty was gone. The first name that came to my mind was Tulane running back Makhi Hughes, only to remember Hughes had transferred to Oregon. Such is life as a G5 program these days, but their loss is Oregon's gain!

Hughes rushed for 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns last year and looked impossible to tackle at times. He'll now be the head Duck at the RB spot, but he'll be spelled by Noah Whittington (540 and 6) and Da'Jaun Riggs.

Joel Klatt names surprise team as Penn State's most important game this season

“If Penn State loses that game [at home versus Oregon], all anyone is going to be talking about is that James Franklin can’t win these games, because that’s the slow-boiling narrative going into the season,” Klatt said. “… He’s got to win that game.

“If you don’t beat Oregon, at home, in the White Out, you’re like ‘Oh no, is this going to work?’ Again, it’s time. You don’t want to put that on your shoulders in November in the ‘Shoe at Ohio State.”

Klatt also talked about how the talent disparity is razor thin between these teams, and highlighted the strong, veteran group of Nittany Lions returners that should give Franklin a good chance of earning a marquee victory over the Ducks.

Why Fox Sports' Joel Klatt believes Oregon, not Ohio State, is the most crucial must-win game of the season for James Franklin and Penn State.

Where the Oregon Ducks rank in ESPN’s Future Power Rankings for college football

In the college football world, being set up for the future is almost as important to fans as being ready to win right now. With a large emphasis on recruiting and the classes that are set up to come down the pipeline, fans who may not root for a team that is projected to be in the championship mix in a given year often opine about "down the road."

For the Oregon Ducks, you can have both things.
