The Ducks starting right fielder during the season’s opening weekend earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after leading the Ducks to a series sweep of George Mason. Laya slashed .538/.600/1.077 with a 1.677 OPS. He finished with three extra-base hits including two home runs and a double. Laya had multiple-hits in the first two games while reaching base multiple times in all four contests. He went 3-for-4 in the season opener with a double and two runs scored. In game two, he homered twice and drove in three runs, before going 1-for-2 with a run scored and a hit by pitch in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
