Jon Joseph Moderator No. 1 Share Posted December 27, 2021 If the proposed 12 team playoff format was adopted as recommended by the playoff review committee; or, as recommended by the Pac-12, 5 P5 champs, highest G5 ranked team in, would it help the Pac-12's CFB fortunes? After posting 2 'negative' takes on the conference back-to-back I'd like to say 'Yes,' but I cannot do so. The field in 2021 would be seeded exactly as rankings 1-12 appear in the final PO committee ranking. 1 Pac-12 team in the field, Utah and the Utes would be ranked 11. 1 ACC team. 1 Independent. 1 AAC/G5, 3 SEC, 3 B1G, 2 B12. And with the manner in which the conference is (not) recruiting and with continuing to play 9 conference games, I do not see the above conference representatives varying much if at all? Pretty much count on at least 3 SEC and 3 B1G teams being in the field every year.
30Duck Moderator No. 2 Share Posted December 27, 2021 Rankings are not as good as a Playoff with conference champs and filled out by at-large teams with records deserving of a reward. But it would beat the CFP now. The larger issue, being that our conference is the Pac-2 will definitely limit its participation.
Pocketchange No. 3 Share Posted December 27, 2021 What’s the difference between an 4 SEC team playoff and a 12 teams SEC team playoff? about 8 teams. you can’t have millions of dollars at stake with a subjective beauty pageant picking the contestants and have a satisfied consumer base. Someone will alway be left out unjustly and the image of the playoffs will just deteriorate over time. The only way for the playoff to work is through an objective way to get in.

That would mean an even number of conferences producing an even number of champions, with entry to the CFP restricted to the conference champions only. ESPN/SEC would never go for that!

Unfortunately, his eloquence shared here doesn't do it. Finebaum has said, on ESPN, that the monopoly the SEC has created will eventually kill the interest, let alone the financial ability for the sport to survive. But, until the Pac-12 moves beyond being an also ran, and take proactive steps to bolster its place, the MWC is on the verge of passing the Pac-12, in viability, the future is bleak.

You build a better mouse trap, the dumb mice die and the smarter mice stop showing up. So sad. A Pac-20 would have been a player on the national scene.
