Oregon Beats No. 19 Gonzaga 9-5!

Recommended Posts

More later, but this a new record at Oregon as they have had multiple home runs FIVE GAMES in a row!

The Zags are No. 23 in one Baseball poll, and No. 19 in another as they've swept three games from both Cal State Fullerton, Oklahoma State and beat Missouri.  They have a pitcher who throws 97 mph, but I am not sure if we will see him.

Oregon is starting Jacob Hughes, 1-0, 1.59 ERA from Meridian, Idaho and who has a brother Gabriel, on the Gonzaga team and won freshman All-American honors as a pitcher. I wonder if we will see a brotherly pitching duel?

From the Gonzaga website:

SPOKANE, Wash. – No. 19 Gonzaga baseball  is set to host Oregon at Patterson Baseball Complex and Steve Hertz Field for its home opener at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday's matchup will be the first of two between the regional rivals, with the Bulldogs set for a rematch in Eugene, Ore. on May 17.

The Ducks (13-6, 5-1 Pac-12) wrapped up a sweep of the Utes (11-7-1, 2-4 Pac-12) over the weekend, moving into sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 Conference in the process after taking a series from then-No. 2 Stanford the weekend previous. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (14-4, 3-0 WCC) are winners of three straight after a sweep of Pacific last weekend to open West Coast Conference Play – their third road sweep of the season so far.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Gonzaga has faced Pac-12 opponents numerous times over the years — 569 times to be exact. Against current members of the conference, the Zags carry a 219-349-1 record. Of the 12 current member institutions, GU has faced Washington State the most with an 88-126 overall record in the series.

The next opponent the Zags have played the most out of the Pac-12 is Washington with 141 meetings between the two programs with the most recent meeting coming April 20, 2021 at Washington, a 3-0 shutout win in favor of Gonzaga.

Overall, the Bulldogs are 2-17 against the Ducks since 2010, with both wins coming in 2016. GU faced Oregon twice last season – once in a midweek matchup on May 18, 2021 and again as part of the Eugene Regional on June 5. This is the first time Oregon has played against the Zags in Spokane since 2016, with GU set to travel to Eugene again for round two on May 17.

Cool!  Thanks Axel, as this is a “resume” game for both teams.

when we consider that the Pac 12 only has two teams that are currently ranked in the top 25 in both polls, (Oregon state and Arizona), it makes this game have that much more meaning as I consider it another tough conference game.

Can’t wait to see the ducks continue this hitting barrage. Tough to do against quality pitchers so we shall see. Hope it won’t be frostbite weather up there.

In the top of the 7th Josh Kasevich lined out to second base. Anthony Hall doubled to right field, Josiah Cromwick singled to right field with Hall moving to third base. Tyler Ganus pitch ran for Cromwick and is thrown out trying to steal second. Sam Novitske grounds out to shortstop to strand Hall at third base.

After a fly out to left field, Cade McGee hit a home run off Rio Britton. Rio walks the next batter who promptly advances to second base on a wild pitch. A ground out to second base advances the runner to third base. A wild pitch by Britton scores the runner from third base. Waz has seen enough and calls for Matt Dallas in relief of Britton. Dallas strikes out the next batter to limit the damage to two runs for Gonzaga.

Jacob Walsh starts our Ducks in the top of the 9th inning with a “no doubt” home run over the right field wall.  Josh Kasevich grounded out to second base for out #1. Anthony Hall flied out to center field. Jack Scanlon popped out to short stop to end the inning, but Oregon adds a run.

Kolby Somers comes on to try and close out the game for Oregon. Kolby yields a leadoff single to left field. The next batter hits a single to center field with the runner advancing to second base. The third batter singles to center field. Bases loaded with nobody out. A liner to short stop results in the first out with the runners not able to advance. Somers entices a DOUBLE PLAY(pitcher to catcher to first base) FOR THE OREGON WIN!

Thank you, ICamel, for your many updates. Great win for the Ducks.

Home runs or bunts--which do I like better? Hmm...let me ponder that for about one nanosecond. Thanks to Coach Wasikowski for letting his talented hitters swing away. Home runs create offense; bunts are offensive.

Yes, bunts do have their place in baseball strategy, but not in the second or third inning. Coach Waz knows the importance of playing for the big inning and that kind of thinking leads to victories.
