Diamond Ducks Take Down the Portland Pilots 5-4

1st Inning;

Tanner Smith hit a line drive to center right that is chased down by the center fielder for out number one. Drew Cowley back from injury works a 3-2 count for a walk. Cowley moves into scoring position at second base with a balk by Portland's pitcher. A fly ball out by Brennan Milone to right field advances Cowley to third base. Jacob Walsh puts a seeing eye single between the first and second basemen, and the Ducks score first! Walsh is caught trying to steal second base to end the top of the inning for Oregon.

Scott Ellis is on the mound to pitch for our Ducks. Ellis gives a free pass to first base to put the leadoff batter on base. Those damn walks! The second batter looks at a called third strike for the first out. Second walk given up puts runners on second and first base. A wild pitch moves the runners up to third and second. A nice throw by Josiah Cromwick picks off the Pilot runner at third base for out number two. Ellis gives up his third walk of the inning. A fly ball out to center field ends Portland threat in the first inning.

2nd inning;

Josh Kasevich flied out to center field. Anthony Hall hit a one hopper to the wall in center left for a double. Josiah Cromwick hit a grounder to shortstop and gets thrown out at first base, while Hall scampers to third. A passed ball scores Anthony Hall for Oregon's second score of the game. Colby Shade is plunked by a pitch to send him to first base. The Pilots pitcher is wary of Gavin Grant and ends up walking him to put runners at second and first. Shade steals third base. Runners at the corners. Tanner Smith hit a pitch into center field scoring Colby Shade.

Drew Cowley with a swinging strikeout ends the top half of the inning.

2 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors, 2 LOB

 

Ellis still pitching for Oregon, and starts out better with a flyout to left field. Spoke too soon as the second batter is walked by Ellis on four straight balls. And that fourth walk of the game ends Scott Ellis time on the mound. Dylan Sabia in to pitch for the Ducks. The first batter to face Sabia hit a ground ball to Jacob Walsh at first base where he records the second out, with the runner advancing to second base on the fielders choice. Dylan Sabia gets the third out with a caught looking strikeout.

3rd inning;

Brennan Milone hit a fly out to center field. Jacob Walsh hit a high bouncing ball that is fielded by the pitcher for out number two. Josh Kasevich swings and misses on an 0-2 pitch for a three up - three down top of the third inning.

0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors, 0 LOB

 

Dylan Sabia continues to pitch against Portland. A single, flyout to right field, and two infield ground outs ends the third inning.

0 Runs, 1 Hits, 0 Errors, 1 LOB

 

Still 3-0 Oregon!

4th inning;

Anthony Hall singles into right field to start the Ducks off in the inning. Josiah Cromwick gets the first out on a swinging strikeout, but Hall steals second base to put him in scoring position. Anthony Hall tried to steal third base and gets caught in "no mans land" between third and second for out number two. Colby Shade hit a groundout to short, and Oregon can't capitalize with a run in scoring position.

Caleb Sloan in to pitch for Oregon. A groundout, two walks, and a hit batter loaded the bases for the Pilots. Sloan gets out number two on a swinging strikeout. Coach Wasikowski goes to his bullpen and brings in Rio Britton to try and end Portland's threat. Rio does his job by getting the only Pilot batter with a hit this afternoon to groundout to Josh Kasevich at shortstop.

5th inning;

Gavin Grant fly's out to right field. Tanner Smith takes one for the team on being hit by a pitched ball. Drew Cowley hit into a double play second to short to first to end the top of the fifth inning.

0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors, 0 LOB

 

Rio Britton will continue to face the Pilots. Now that is what a relief pitcher is supposed to do as RIO strikes out the side on just 13 pitches!

6th inning;

Brennan Milone flies out to the warning track in right field. Next up is Jacob Walsh and he legs out a hit that goes off the third baseman's glove. Josh Kasevich hit a fly out to center right field. Anthony Hall hits a smash to right field that clears the wall to score Walsh ahead of him.

 

Josiah Cromwick drew a walk to continue the top of the inning and bring Colby Shade to the plate. Shade ends the top half of the sixth inning on a swinging strikeout.

2 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors, 1 LOB

 

Stone Churby is the fifth pitcher to take the mound for our Ducks. Stone strikes out his first batter faced, but can't find the strike zone and walks the next Pilot on four straight balls. Another walk yielded by Churby puts two runners on base. After a visit to the mound by pitching Coach Jake Angier, Churby strikes out the next hitter. Stone ends the bottom half of the sixth on a second consecutive swinging strikeout.

7th inning;

Gavin Grant looks at a called third strike for the Ducks first out. Tanner Smith hit a ball up the middle into center field for a single. Drew Cowley flied out to center field and Tanner is out trying to tag up and advancing.

0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors, 0 LOB

 

Matt Dallas Portland picks up their second hit of the game on a single to right field. The runner advances to second base on a pickoff attempt at first that is high that Walsh can't handle. Dallas gets the first out on a strikeout. A single to right field puts runners on the corners. A double down the right field line scores Portland's first run with runners at third and second bases. An infield groundout scores the second run for the Pilot's. A grounder that Gavin Grant throws into the dirt at first base that Jacob Walsh can't dig out plates the third run for Portland. Another groundout to second which Grant handles, ends the inning.

8th inning;

Brennan Milone gets on with a single into left field. Jacob Walsh hit into a double play, first to the shortstop covering second base. Josh Kasevich walks on four straight pitches. Anthony Hall popped out to center left field.

Logan Mercado in to pitch against Portland is the Ducks seventh pitcher this afternoon. After a lineout to left field, a triple and double puts another run across for the Pilot's. Mercado strikes out the next Pilot for the second out. Kolby Somers in to pitch for Oregon with a runner on second base. Kolby entices a comebacker to the mound for out number three.

1 Run, 2 Hits, 0 Errors, 1 LOB

 

Pilots have closed to within one run and trail 5-4 heading into the ninth inning.

9th inning;

Josiah Cromwick flied out to center field. Colby Shade struck out swinging. Gavin Grant ends the top half of the ninth on a hard line drive directly to the shortstop.

0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors, 0 LOB

 

Kolby Somers will continue to pitch for Oregon. Popup to shortstop Josh Kasevich in short left field is the first out. A groundout to shortstop leaves the Pilots down to their last out. And Kolby Somers strikes out the last batter on three straight pitches over the plate!

Whew!  It would NOT have been good losing to them, although get this; Portland was No. 66 in RPI, while our upcoming opponent, Washington State is No. 101!  This win was good for our RPI!
