9 Oregon Ducks expected to contribute to MLB clubs in 2023

Football and basketball rule the college athletics landscape, often leaving baseball (and softball) as the forgotten sports of the spring season.

For the Oregon Ducks, it can be a missed opportunity to see high level athletes both in Eugene and across the Pac-12, a conference that excels in both sports.

It’s also a chance to see future big league stars, as evidenced by the high number of pros the Ducks have cycled through the baseball program in recent years.

A quick look at Fangraphs’ 2023 projections shows nine Oregon alumni who are projected to make a difference in the big leagues this season, with first pitch slated for Thursday, March 30.

Oregon has primarily succeeded at developing pitching, with seven of the nine big leaguers coming from the mound and only two at the plate.

Below is a look at those nine players, when they played at Oregon, and how they are projected to perform this upcoming season:

Justin Herbert may miss the beginning of offseason workouts with the Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert may not be ready to participate when the Los Angeles Chargers began offseason activities.

The quarterback underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing shoulder) Jan. 25. Herbert played through the injury during the 2022 season. While there’s uncertainty about when – or if – Herbert will be available for activities with voluntary OTAs (Organized Team Activities) beginning May 22, he’s expected to be ready for the beginning of training camp in July.

Justin Herbert’s upcoming contract extension could pay him more than $50 million annually

Justin Herbert is in line to receive a hefty pay increase in the near future.

The Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback and the team have initiated negotiations towards a long-term contract extension. There’s talk Herbert could earn north of $50 million a season when he signs an extension.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, who is at the NFL’s owners meetings in Phoenix, said talks are at the beginning stages. He added the talks are “ongoing,” but left no doubt a deal will get done and he expects Herbert to be with the team for many years.

Ducks in the NBA: Bol Bol struggles, Eugene Omoruyi finds new home

It was a disappointing season for the Oregon Ducks on the hardwood this season, but for hoops fans in Eugene at least there are a handful of alumni playing at the NBA level.

Dillon Brooks has been the Ducks player in the news most often this season, although usually for his antics on the court rather than his play on the court – which has been disappointing for the most part this year.

Elsewhere, Payton Pritchard is still with Boston despite requesting a trade before the deadline, Chris Duarte is still dealing with ankle injuries that have plagued him for two years, and Bol Bol’s tantalizing potential is marred by inconsistent play.

It all seems so familiar, which is why it’s no surprise that Chris Boucher is posting almost the exact same stat line from last year again this season.

There are some differences, namely Eugene Omoruyi’s team and the emergence of Troy Brown as a starter, but otherwise it’s a lot of familiarity in our latest update on Ducks in the NBA:

Marcus Mariota embraces new role as the backup QB with the Philadelphia Eagles

What Mariota is looking forward to is helping Hurts, who led the Eagles to Super Bowl 57 last season. Mariota said he’s seen it all during his nine years in the league and he plans to use his experience to help Hurts. Hurts, 24, has started in just 34 games during his career and he still has plenty to learn about the position.

“My role is just to provide information and just share experiences,” Mariota told reporters. “I think as a guy who has played in the league now for eight years, you know I’ve been cut; I’ve been a starter; we’ve won playoff games; I’ve been benched.

So, I just really believe that I can relate with a lot of guys, and to be able to just continue to build that chemistry in the locker room and just be a voice and make an impact any way I can. But I think specifically for the quarterback position, ups and downs you’re going to face those throughout your career.”

Kayvon Thibodeaux always wanted to show his mother how much he appreciated the role she played in his successful journey to the NFL.

Oregon alumna Gwen Svekis has been selected to compete for U.S. Women's National Team for the first time in her career. Svekis was an alternate for the 2022 WNT, but this marks the first time on the active roster for the 2018 graduate.

She will join 15 other athletes representing Team USA at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Cup – Group A event July 11-15 in Fingal-Dublin, Ireland.

"We are so proud to have Gwen competing at the highest level of our sport and representing the University of Oregon," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "We are so thrilled to see all her dedication and hard work rewarded by being rostered with Team USA and can't wait to see her play for the Red, White and Blue this summer."

Svekis is the eighth Duck to earn a spot with Team USA since 2013.

The former Duck standout and the 2018 NFCA National Catcher of the Year has spent the last three seasons playing professionally with Athletes United. Her first two pro seasons were with Chicago of the National Pro Fastpitch league.

Twitter Reaction: Dillon Brooks calls out LeBron James, draws endless ridicule on social media

Have you ever known Dillon Brooks shy away from controversy?

In fact, have you ever known Dillon Brooks to not actively seek the controversy, throwing out asinine statements and being — for lack of a better word — borderline obnoxious at points?

That was the Dillon Brooks that we saw again on Wednesday night, as the former Oregon Duck star once again found himself drawing ire from the large majority of social media users after his comments directed toward LeBron James.

As you would expect, the comments did not go over particularly well in the NBA Twitter world. Here are some of the best reactions.

Los Angeles Chargers once again draft with Justin Herbert in mind

Justin Herbert will have a new wide receiver at his disposal for 2023. Quentin Johnston, former star WR for the TCU Horned Frogs was just selected by the Chargers, with the 22nd pick in this year’s NFL draft. giving the former Oregon Ducks’ QB a nice weapon to add to the skill position group.

Last year, TCU had one of the most prolific offenses in the country and it led them to the National Championship game, though they ultimately lost to the Georgia Bulldogs. Johnston played a large role in that success catching 60 passes last season, which amounted to 1069 yards receiving and 6 TD.

Memphis Grizzlies will not bring back Dillon Brooks ‘under any circumstances’: Report

Dillon Brooks has worn out his welcome in Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies have told Brooks he will not be brought back “under any circumstances,” according to a report Tuesday.

Brooks, 27, will be an unrestricted free agent when the NBA’s 2023-24 season officially begins July 1. The forward and former Oregon Ducks’ star will be looking for a new team to join following a turbulent 2022-23 season filled with controversy, suspensions, fines and technical fouls.

The Grizzlies’ decision to move on from Brooks isn’t a surprise. The team reportedly tried to trade him before the trade deadline in February. Their decision was sealed following the Grizzlies’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in a first-round playoff series.

Brooks created controversy by calling Lakers’ star LeBron James “old” and indicated he didn’t respect the superstar forward following Game 2. He was ejected after hitting James in the groin area during Game 3.

He had defensive lapses at critical moments late in the game during the Grizzlies’ 117-111 overtime loss in Game 4. He was fined $25,000 for failing to make himself to the available to the media following each of their three losses in Los Angeles.
