Pac-12 Oregon's Coverage of Women's Basketball

Recommended Posts

I watched the PAC12 Oregon streaming of the Oregon-Northwestern women's basketball game.  The play-by-play and color announcer (Bev Smith) were great--BUT BUT BUT.  Someone decided to show full screen messages like "Great Shot" during the game.  This pretty much always meant the viewer missed live action.  Injudicious use of replays also meant missing live action (this was a big problem last year as well.)  People tune in to see the game--the whole game.  Missing live action, particularly for the silly graphics, is irritating and this problem needs to be corrected.

"I plan on redshirting to get adjusted and start practicing and start school," she said. "But if coach needs me to play I will, but it's not the plan."

Ducks in self-improvement mode after encouraging weekend in Portland

The 19th-ranked ball club proved last weekend they can compete with the nation's best. They must know understand

how their strengths kept them competitive with quality opponents and how their weaknesses cost them.

"Offensively, I have no issues right now," Graves told reporters following Wednesday's practice. "We've turned it over more than I'd like in

a couple of the games, but our field goal percentage is great, our assisted field goals is really good, which means we're moving the basketball."

Local junior college guard Bella Hamel fired up by opportunity to play at Oregon

A 5-foot-9 guard, Hamel grew up in Hillsboro before her family moved to Tucson for the first three years of high school. A return to the state for her senior season brought her OSAA All-State recognition while she starred at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, but not enough exposure to receive interest from four-year schools.

Hamel then enrolled at Lane Community College in Eugene with hopes of piquing interest from schools like Oregon. Then on Oct. 30 of this past year, Hamel exploded in a closed scrimmage with Pacific University. Everything came together that evening, as she scored 41 points.

Slumping Ducks continue to drop in ESPN's bracket projections

ESPN bracketologist Charlie Creme released a new batch of tournament seeding projections and dropped the Ducks two seed-lines from a seven-seed to a nine-seed. The tumble follows consecutive losses to Stanford, Colorado and Utah.

Once in line to host the first two rounds by Creme's forecasting, the Ducks are now among the final dozen or so at-large teams in the field. With a four-game road trip upcoming, finding success down the stretch will determine if they make the Big Dance at all.

Oregon women’s basketball guard Endyia Rogers undecided about WNBA draft or returning to UO in 2023-24

Oregon women’s basketball guard Endyia Rogers has not decided whether she’ll utilize her final year of eligibility or enter the WNBA draft.

“It’s there,” Rogers said of the additional year of eligibility. “But I haven’t made a decision or anything.”

“We’ve talked about it; I think she kind of goes back and forth,” Oregon coach Kelly Graves said. “I’ve talked to a few of the agents and a couple of general managers, I think she’s on the board. We’ll see.”

Ducks remain in NCAA Tournament field in latest EPSN bracket projection

Despite a five-game losing streak, the Oregon women's basketball team remains inside ESPN's projected NCAA Tournament field.

The Ducks are just 14-11 overall and 5-9 in Pac-12 play. Finishing with a .500 record in conference play would require a perfect 4-0 finish to the regular season with games against Washington State, Washington, Arizona and Arizona State remaining.

The quality of Oregon's schedule has kept them afloat as a possible tournament team despite losing 10 of 14 games. The team may have lost 11 games this season, but 10 of the 11 defeats have come to teams currently in Creme's predicted field of 68.

The Ducks are 21st in the NET Ranking, which is seen as a valuable tool for measuring postseason worthiness.

Ducks now last team within NCAA Tournament field in latest ESPN projection

It's too early to say if Oregon's done enough to reach this year's NCAA Tournament field, but at least one media outlet thinks the Ducks would be in the field should the season end today.

ESPN's Charlie Creme posted his most recent bracket projections on Friday morning, and now has Oregon as the final team within the field as a 12-seed. The Ducks would face St. John's in the opening four games in Creme's projection.

Per Creme, the Ducks opened the week as the final team outside the field entering this week's conference tournament. A win over Washington, another bubble team on Wednesday, provided them enough juice to get over the hump this time around.

Oregon's resume is a confounding one. Sure, the Ducks are 17-14 on the season and finished with a losing 7-11 record in conference play, but they also have far and away the best computer metrics of any team currently on the bubble. Even with the 14 defeats this season, the Ducks are No. 19 in the NET Ranking after Thursday's Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal loss to Stanford.

Kelly Graves says Ducks would play in WNIT if NCAA Tournament doesn't work out

It remains unclear what the postseason will hold for the Oregon women's basketball team, but Kelly Graves made it clear following Thursday's Pac-12 Tournament loss to Stanford that his team would be playing regardless of what tournament they're included in.

While the latest ESPN bracket projections have the Ducks as the final team inside the field, they remain anything but a lock to go dancing.

Should the Ducks be excluded from that tournament, they would accept a bid to an invitational tournament like the WNIT, Graves said on Thursday.

"My philosophy has always been if somebody wants us to play, we're going to play. So, that's a yes," Graves said when asked about a possible WNIT opportunity. "I think the team would rather play. I've never understood why people turn things like that down on some kind of principle."

Oregon women now outside tournament field in latest ESPN projection

While Oregon has put the finishing touches on its at-large berth resume, other schools across the country continue to play on and add to theirs.

West Virginia scored a big win over Baylor on Saturday to conclude their regular season, and according to ESPN's latest bracket projections, the win is enough to lift the Mountaineers over the Ducks for the final spot in this year's NCAA Tournament field.

Charlie Creme, the website's bracket expert, has now dropped the Ducks to the first team outside of the field of 68.

Oregon's NCAA Tournament future still in doubt ahead of Selection Sunday

As recently as a few days ago, it seemed like Kelly Graves and the Oregon Ducks had done enough over the final few games of the season to get themselves in a spot to be invited to the NCAA Tournament.

It turns out that might have been a little bit too optimistic, unfortunately for Oregon fans. According to the latest edition of ESPN’s bracketology, the Ducks are still listed as the “first team out” with less than a week to go until Selection Sunday.

Oregon is done playing, obviously, but there are still other dominoes to fall across the nation.

At the moment, it looks like the Ducks might miss out on the NCAA Tournament, according to the latest bracketology.

Chance Gray’s familial guidance has helped her navigate Oregon women’s up-and-down season

Gray has played and started in every game this season for the Ducks. She is averaging 10.7  points per game, 2.4 assists and 0.8 steals.

Part of Gray’s maturity comes from the fact that her family is not new to navigating the collegiate sports scene. Her father Carlton Gray played college football for UCLA and was drafted into the NFL where he played eight seasons.

Her older sister Amber Gray played basketball at both the University of Tennessee and Xavier before playing professionally overseas. Both coached her during her last season at Winton Woods High School.

“They’ve taught me the work ethic and what it takes to be successful at these different levels, so I’m very thankful to have people like them in my corner,” she said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

Oregon women see NCAA Tournament odds diminished by upsets

The last 24 hours have not not kind to Oregon's at-large hopes.

Play in the AAC and WCC conference tournaments did not go there way, with South Florida and Gonzaga each failing to punch automatic tickets. Both schools have strong enough resumes to earn at-large bids, thereby making the margin smaller for bubble teams.

Because of these upsets, the Ducks have fallen to the third team outside of ESPN's NCAA Tournament bracket projections.

WNIT quarterfinal exit sends Oregon into important offseason

After a disappointing 2022-23 season came to an unceremonious conclusion in Seattle on Sunday, the Ducks will enter an important offseason with a roster that remains in flux.

The only thing known for certain is that three seniors have played their final games. Taya Hanson, Ahlise Hurst and Taylor Hosendove have exhausted their eligibility and will not be playing basketball collegiately after Sunday's 63-59 loss to Washington in the WNIT quarterfinal round.

That leaves the seven remaining players with decisions to make. The most prominent and urgent decision belongs to Endyia Rogers, who has until Tuesday night (per reporting from OregonLive's James Crepea) to decide if she wants to enter the WNBA Draft or not. Rogers could also chose to use the NCAA's extra season at Oregon or go elsewhere.

Here's a rundown of some things to be aware of as Oregon's 2023 offseason gets underway this week.
