Spring Football Practice: 4/4/23

Recommended Posts

Spring practice starts again today after finals and Spring Break.

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Several new Ducks join Oregon roster for remainder of spring season

Back in March, we got a good look at which new players, be it transfers or incoming freshmen, would be joining the Oregon Ducks for the spring football season and working with the team leading up to the spring game. We got ideas on positions and found out what numbers everyone would be wearing. It wasn’t the entire 2023 new-player crop, but over half of the new additions were on the ground in Eugene.

After a two-week break for finals and spring break, the Ducks now have more new players with them as they resume practices on Tuesday, growing the roster even more. This won’t be the last time the roster changes, either, though we may be able to feel comfortable with this group of guys until after the spring game. Once May comes around, the transfer portal will open back up, and there are a handful of guys that will surely come and go during that period.

For now, though, here are the newest Ducks to land in Eugene and join the team:

Spring Ball Takeaways: Ducks get back to work in wet Eugene weather

The Oregon Ducks returned to spring football practice after a two-week break on Tuesday morning in a wet and cold Eugene rain at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. While the weather was drear, the energy was high for a team that got a taste of football once again back in March and has had a couple of weeks to get ready to attack success once again.

With a few new faces on the roster after the break — notably including Ole Miss safety transfer Tysheem Johnson — we got a good look at what this team will take into the spring game at the end of April as far as a roster standpoint.

As always, media members were allowed to watch in for the first 15-20 minutes of practice, which included stretching, special teams, and some individual work. Here are some of the biggest takeaways as we got back into it.

Oregon adds a 5th QB to the roster — Matt Rush from Washington University

It’s always good to have many quarterbacks on the roster just in case disaster strikes via injuries.

Oregon as added walk-on quarterback Matt Rush as a senior transfer out of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Rush isn’t your typical walk-on QB, though.

Oregon Football Spring Camp Updates: Practice Three

Running back Bucky Irving provided the initial spark at practice by breaking the Ducks down into their special teams practice, with his voice echoing across the practice facility.

The day featured a few notable absences, as veteran wide receiver Josh Delgado, defensive back Daymon David, and freshman offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson could not participate in the day's work. Junior Angilau and Ty Delgado were limited during offensive line drills. No defensive players were limited during position drills or special teams drills.

Luke Dunne and Ross James continued their battle for the opening-day punting nod, as both featured excellent punts that soared to over 50 yards. However, once again, Dunne's overall punts were more consistent and traveled farther.

Dunne also unleashed a "banana punt" where the football looks like it will go right at first but then sharply veers left, making it incredibly difficult to catch. Franklin did not catch the "banana punt" as he turned around while gauging where the punt would fall.

WATCH: Dan Lanning provides roster update, Spring Football progress after Day 3

Oregon head football coach Dan Lanning gives his first impressions of Oregon's third spring football practice fresh off the practice field. He provides updates at multiple positions, talks newcomers, and gives his input on what type of progress the Ducks are looking for over the next few days as they return to the field later this week.

Dan Lanning and Oregon seek growth and consistency after its third spring practice

"Right now, spring ball is not about the scheme, right? It's about playing ball, playing fast, figuring out who can play," said Lanning. "I think we still got to figure out who our players are. A little thinner on offense than we are on defense, just from a numbers standpoint. So we've got to be conscientious of that as we get guys but want to continue to maximize as many reps as we can get."

Oregon's schedule for the rest of the week will include practice on Thursday morning and then wrap up the week with practice on Saturday. The Ducks are expected to use Saturday's practice as a competition day. That typically includes some form of a scrimmage in the past, but it hasn't been announced if the Ducks will hold a formal scrimmage on Saturday.

Nonetheless, Lanning has expectations for what he wants to see between now and when the media will speak with him next Tuesday.

"Consistent growth," said Lanning.

Dan Lanning feels walk-on QB Matt Rush can help out Ducks in many ways

Walk-on quarterbacks are normally little more than an afterthought in college football. Only if there’s a dire situation going on do they ever end up seeing the field. In a more likely scenario, they play the role of the opposing quarterback for that week in practice to help prepare the defense for what is waiting for them on Saturday.

For new quarterback Matt Rush, though, there is some experience that he brings to the table. While his role hasn’t quite been defined yet, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning says that Rush will be an asset for the Ducks in 2023.

Oregon Preparing to Host a Loaded Group of Visitors for Annual Spring Game

Some of the biggest names in the country are flocking to Eugene to check out the Ducks.

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks aren't messing around on the recruiting trail this spring.

They've already hosted some big names on campus this spring but you should only expect the names to get bigger as we get closer to the annual spring game, which is set for Saturday April 29 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

The Ducks have the No. 15 class in the country for 2024, featuring five verbal commitments.

Here's an updated list of recruits that are expected to be in attendance. I will continue to update this list as more recruits announce their visit plans and I confirm with sources.
