The B1G's New Commissioner

Recommended Posts

The B1G follows Pac-12 and B12 in hiring a person more for his media and marketing experience than college sports experience.

Petitti will replace Kevin Warren, who left to take over as president of the Chicago Bears in January

Do we need any further proof that college sports, certainly football and basketball, have gone the way of the media?

I have no idea whet-so-ever as to this gentlemen's interest in further B1G expansion.

We'll just have to wait and see what he will say about potential additions of new teams, I really hope Oregon is included and that we have exciting games against our new B1G foes as well as USC, UCLA and (hopefully) Washington

As noted in many articles the $ for sports broadcasting is drying up. At least on the linear side of things. How much is FOX, CBS, NBC, the B1G broadcast partners, willing to pay for additional west coast inventory with the LA market locked up?

Apple has a deal with MLS. Amazon has a deal with the NFL. The Pac-10 via the relocated network brings broadcast facilities to all 10 teams. It's risky but IMO streaming half of the football + inventory is the way for the Pac-12 to go. Risk that could be significantly rewarded.

And a streaming component, in addition to ESPN and FOX folding the wallet, is the hold up on getting a deal done. Yes, ESPN+ is out there but as an add-on; thus, GK is plowing new ground negotiating with high-tech companies new to the college scene.

With a 12-team CFB playoff coming in 2024, likely IMO to expand to 16 teams in 2026, and with the NCAA CBB tournament likely to go to an 80-team field, competing on the west coast could well pay off better for Oregon than playing in the B1G? Playing without B1G travel demands.
