Spring Football Practice: 4/13/23

Recommended Posts

Spring football practice is scheduled for today. I am starting this thread early so that posters may start dropping items in as they occur.

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Spring Ball Takeaways: Ducks show offensive looks in 7th spring practice

With seven practices now in the books, a lot of consistency is starting to show itself for the Ducks. We’ve seen consistency in the players who are on the field, the rotations that are utilized in drills, and the guys who are stepping up and being vocal at practice.

Trikeweze Bridges continues to split time at cornerback and safety for second straight spring

Around this time a year ago, newly minted head coach Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi began working out cornerback Trikweze Bridges at safety. Bridges and fellow safety Bryan Addison often commanded the first team reps during Oregon's fastball periods.

By fall camp, Bridges had moved back to cornerback and lined up opposite Christian Gonzalez. From there, Bridges played opposite of Gonzalez every game, registering over 700 snaps.

Bridges recorded 49 tackles, eight passes defended, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. For the nerds out there, Bridges recorded a 76.4 defensive grade and a 78.8 coverage grade. Bridges allowed two touchdowns all season in coverage, zero in the final five games against the likes of Washington, Oregon State, North Carolina, and Utah.

On Tuesday, despite the numbers and performances from last season, Bridges acknowledged he is still splitting reps between safety and corner.

Oregon continues to value versatility in Year 2 under Dan Lanning

For the first time this spring, media members were able to watch 11-on-11 periods during practice Thursday and though the team didn’t reveal much during that time, we did see a possible position change for Jamal Hill from safety to linebacker.

Just from looking at him, his added muscle over the offseason might mean that he had a heads-up that a switch could be coming especially with the number of defensive backs Oregon added from the transfer portal.

Someone else who understands position versatility well is senior defensive back Trikweze Bridges, who also talked to the media after practice about where he might be lined up this season.

“Knowing the calls and knowing what to do, and being able to move around to show my versatility – just being able to go to corner and safety,” Bridges said. “I get an equal amount of reps at both corner and safety.”

Dan Lanning is 'a rocket' taking Oregon to the top, says Ducks OL coach A'Lique Terry

Dan Lanning is relentless, a coach with a singular focus on making Oregon as great as it can possibly be.

It was also evident to first-year offensive line coach A’Lique Terry pretty early on.

He also offered some pretty high praise for Lanning.

“I say it all the time: he’s like a maniac, but in a great way,” Terry said. “He loves everything Oregon football. Anything possible to get us a national championship, that’s what his aim is. And if you’re not someone who’s along with that, you may think Coach is wild. Nah, Coach is locked in on one mission and one goal, and if you’re not locked in with that please step out of the way.

“We’ve got one mission and one goal every single day, and he’s consistent with that. There’s no roller coaster in him. Coach is a rocket and we’re going to the top.”

FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 13

THE DUCKS PRACTICED IN SHELLS THURSDAY, GEARING UP FOR A SCRIMMAGE ON SATURDAY.

Years ago in Florida, A'lique Terry was one of those kids who grew up watching the Ducks dominate the Pac-12 Conference, and look good doing it. Oregon became his dream school.

Terry ultimately played in college at Wake Forest, but he made it to his dream school in 2019, joining the UO football staff as a graduate assistant. After two seasons with the Ducks, he took a full-time position at Hawaii, then joined the Minnesota Vikings staff in 2022.

It was during his tenure there that he had a conversation about his long-term goals, and how they included a return to Eugene.

"I said in five years the plan was to be back," Terry said Thursday, following Oregon's seventh practice of this spring. "Less than 12 months later it happened. God is great, for real."

Terry won two Pac-12 Championship rings in his previous two seasons at Oregon. He also helped groom a generation of offensive linemen from current pros like Shane Lemieux, Jake Hanson, Penei Sewell and Calvin Throckmorton, to 2023 NFL Draft prospects such as Alex Forsyth, to returning UO veterans Steven Jones and Marcus Harper II.

Now, Terry's duties include recruiting future generations of UO offensive linemen. With his passion for the program, he's well-equipped to do so...

Great take, thank you, PA.

In regard to one of the 2 Pac-12 titles? That was a COVID season fluke proved up by the beatdown administered by Iowa State in the Fiesta Bowl.

It's still a conference championship which is nice but IMO it is a championship with an asterisk; especially when considering that Clay Helton was coaching USC.

So happy Coach Terry is on board. A Demon Deacon with an important rebuild OL job in 2023.

Josh Conerly Jr. wants opportunity to 'show people who I am'

Josh Conerly Jr. is hard to miss on the Oregon practice turfs. Even as the team moves between drills, the speed and fluidity with which the 300 pounder maneuvers from one to the other stands out.

It's that athleticism that made him the nation's top-rated offensive line prospect in the 2022 class, per 247Sports. New offensive line coach A'Lique Terry can't help but appreciate how rare his star sophomore's movement skills are.

"He almost has feet like a safety or outside linebacker, and he's got the power of a lineman," Terry said on Thursday. "He's got the tools that are necessary to be another special force. We've seen some special tackles here in our short time here and in the past."

Terry knows about "special forces". He helped bring Penei Sewell along during the 2019 season, when he was a graduate assistant working under Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal.

Oregon OL coach A'lique Terry details his offensive line expectations

Over the last seven seasons, we've seen essentially two variations of the Oregon football offensive line. Two groups of linemen manned starting positions for multiple years consecutively and those groups produced some of the best offensive line play in program history.

Most recently that group was Alex Forsyth, Ryan Walk, T.J. Bass, and Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu starting in 2020. That group is now gone and a third new rendition of the Duck offensive line is on the hunt.

All four seniors who moved on from Oregon have NFL aspirations and will have their chances to land on an NFL roster this coming summer. Their departure opens the door for Oregon's staff to look for the next group.

"Physical, strong, athletic," said Terry when asked about the traits he's looking for to fill out the five spots on the field.

"But if you're looking for non-negotiables: finishers, guys who strain, and guys who want to be extra. I like seeing guys push someone at the end of their highlight and maybe have a little scuffle because I know you've got a little edge to you. That means when you're out here competing with your guys you're going to protect them."

A'Lique Terry believes the O-Line is in 'a great spot' midway through spring

A'Lique Terry admits the program's offensive line is currently in a transitional period. Terry himself has been on campus just a few months after replacing Adrian Klemm in February, and four starters and program cornerstones from a year ago are gone too.

Regardless, Terry's enthusiasm was hard to miss during his first media availability on the job on Thursday afternoon. Not only is the 27-year old an engaging speaker, but his optimism for this year's group, four starters lost or not, was evident too.

''I think we're in a great spot," Terry said of his group. "We've got a ton of guys working their butts off. I could sit here and name every single guy because of the grind they've had right now and in their winter training. They're competing their butts off every single day. If there's anything we ask of them, they're going to do it."

Oregon Ducks’ Treven Ma’ae keeps adding size with move from edge to interior defensive line

Ever since he arrived at Oregon, Treven Ma’ae has added size.

Once 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds at outside linebacker in 2019, Ma’ae was 272 pounds last season and says he’s up to 290 pounds this spring because he’s moved from defensive end to tackle.
