Spring Football Practice: 4/15/23

Recommended Posts

Spring football practice is scheduled for today and from what I have read, it is to be a scrimmage. Media are not allowed in for scrimmages, so I am not really sure what to expect.

I am starting this thread early so that posters may start dropping items in as they occur.

There are 15 spring practices scheduled this season. Each practice will have it's own thread on OBDF and all articles in that thread will only pertain to that particular practice.

This should help in keeping information organized and make it easier for our readers to navigate.

FYI, in the article below you will see the dates for the practices scheduled. Be sure to check in later today as practice articles, interviews, and updates start coming in.

Oregon to be without key offensive starter 'for a while' as spring game looms

Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson is being shut down for the rest of the spring.

Ducks head coach Dan Lanning met with reporters Saturday after the team’s first scrimmage of spring ball and revealed the news. Lanning did not specify what the injury was and it’s unclear if Oregon expects Ferguson to miss any serious time after spring ball concludes.

“He’s going to be down for a while for us,” Lanning said. “We’re just going to be precautionary there with him and hold him out for the rest of spring.”

The Littleton, Colorado, native appeared in all 13 games as a true sophomore last year while making six starts. He finished fourth on the team in both receptions (32) and yards (391). Ferguson also hauled in five touchdowns, a mark that ranked third among Pac-12 tight ends when the season came to a close.

With TFerg out out for the rest of the spring, I'm sure there is a DL portal wish list for another TE. I wonder if they are considering having Matayo U as a backup plan, àla DJJ a couple years back.

Matayo was a monster at TE for Bosco and if he is not going to be utilized much on the edge as a true freshman, the offense could sure use him.

Dan Lanning pleased with team's effort, physicality in first spring scrimmage

Saturday's scrimmage placed the team inside Autzen Stadium for the first time this spring and also brought the first day of to-the-ground tackling.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was pleased with the day's work, which was closed to media, but noted that he'd need to review the scrimmage film before properly critiquing the performance as a whole.

"It was good to get get the guys out there see them compete," Lanning said moments after leaving the stadium's gates. "It was the first time that we've been live this spring — tackle to the ground. Guys did a great job handling that and did also good job protecting their teammates... Altogether, a good competitive day."

According to Lanning the defense controlled things early before the offense was able to connect on a few explosive pass plays. The offense punched in a few red zone trips too. Traeshon Holden was the recipient of one of the deep shots, while Lanning stated that Kris Hutson scored on a pass closer to the end zone.

Major takeaways from Oregon's spring scrimmage, Day 1 transfer portal activity

A lot happened on Saturday in the Oregon Ducks football world.

The morning started with Dan Lanning and the Ducks going through their first scrimmage of the spring season taking place inside Autzen Stadium with select fans in attendance. The day ended with a trio of Oregon players announcing that they would be entering the transfer portal and leaving the Ducks.

While media members were not allowed into the scrimmage to watch the team play, I have gotten the chance to talk to several people who were in attendance, and have some takeaways from the information that I’ve gathered.

There are also several takeaways to be had from comments made by Lanning and TE coach Drew Mehringer, as well as the transfers that took place later in the day.

We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, let’s get into it.

Dan Lanning gives insight into freshmen running backs Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar

The Oregon Football program returns perhaps one of the nation's best running back duos in juniors Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington. Collectively last year, they combined for 1,837 yards rushing, 10 touchdowns while also adding 53 catches for four touchdowns and 468 yards.

Oregon knows they've got two special backs manning the position going into the 2023 football season. Oregon added two big-time high school prospects in 2023's recruiting class in 4-stars, Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar. How have those freshmen performed through the first half of spring ball?

"Today's fun for me because we're not thud tempo; it's to the ground. So sometimes things that people think are tackles in practice, you really find out today," said Lanning after Oregon's eighth practice of spring and first scrimmage of spring ball.

Dowdell in particular is a bruising running back that played over 220 pounds during his high school career. The Ducks liked his big-back play-making ability at the next level. Limar is a running back who, at the high school level, could play in the slot or as a running back, and the Ducks are looking for him to bring that play-making ability to the offense.

FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 15

The Oregon football team passed the halfway point of this year's spring practice schedule on Saturday, and marked the occasion by holding the first scrimmage of this spring.

Over about two hours Saturday morning, the Ducks began with position drills, progressed into larger groups and then held the first live-tackling drills of this spring with 11-on-11 scrimmage periods. And they did so in the friendly confines of Autzen Stadium.

"It's just fun to practice where you play, and just create as much of a game environment as possible for our guys," head coach Dan Lanning said. "It's one of the best stadiums and venues in the nation. Any time we get to go in there and compete, it's fun for us."

PA, thanks for another great update.

Media was not allowed to watch the scrimmage. I am guessing that big-money donors were the ones allowed to watch the 'game.'

I recall during Pete Carroll's time at USC most of the practices were open to the press and the public, including Snoop Dog.

I'm guessing that Texas Tech and others will have scouts at the to-be-broadcast spring game and the Portland State game. All cards will not be shown in either one of these two games but I wonder if not allowing the media and more fans in to watch a spring practice scrimmage is not at least somewhat self-defeating.

But obviously, it's DL's call, and thankfully for Ducks fans everywhere, not my call.

Drew Mehringer talks Terrance Ferguson, Kenyon Sadiq, and Oregon's talented TE room

As spring practice continues on in Eugene, we’ve had the opportunity to talk to more coaches on the roster outside of head coach Dan Lanning.

On Saturday, it was time to talk to tight ends coach Drew Mehringer, who was made available for the first time since last fall. There was a lot to talk about, including what took place in the scrimmage that the Ducks went through on Saturday morning in Autzen Stadium.

Camden Lewis mentoring younger kickers, hopes to one day become kicking coach

Following Saturday's scrimmage, Dan Lanning praised the consistency with which Camden Lewis has split the uprights this spring. Through eight spring workouts, the fifth-year senior has done what those around the program have grown accustomed — make kicks.

"Camden has been really consistent and done a good job," Lanning said.

This will act as the fifth and final season of Lewis' roller coaster collegiate career. After two challenging seasons in 2019 and 2020, Lewis has connected on 27-of-32 field goal tries the past two seasons, earning All-Pac-12 recognition each season.

This final chapter provides Lewis the opportunity to not only solidify his place among the school's best place kickers — he is 15 kicks shy of breaking the school record for most made field goals in a career — but to also lift up the specialists around him.

The fifth-year veteran is the unquestioned elder statesman of the specialists. True freshmen Grant Meadors and Luke Donne are among the names to know this year along with sophomore Ross James and junior Andrew Boyle.

Mase Funa striving to make most of fifth and final collegiate season

Mase Funa announced his return for a fifth season shortly after being named defensive MVP of the 2022 Holiday Bowl.

While Funa had his answer ready in the postgame press conference, it wasn't a decision he reached on the spot. Prior to the end-of-the-year classic in San Diego, the internal debate had reached its conclusion.

"It's all of our dreams to go to the league. That was my fourth year in college and I was looking forward to try and do it with the film that I had," Funa said of his mindset in December.

"That was the debate that I had with myself, God and family. My whole plan for getting into college was to graduate and get my diploma and make my parents proud. So it was my goal to make sure I graduated before I went to the league or tried to get to the league. Like I mentioned, the No. 1 goal was to graduate, so I decided to come back."

In order to make his professional dreams come true, Funa will have to maximize year five in Eugene. Much of his preparation for that has taken place away from the practice turfs, as improved nutrition and flexibility are top among his priorities.

Freshman tight end Kenyon Sadiq thrust into bigger spring role due to injury

True freshman Kenyon Sadiq will act as one of two scholarship tight ends for the remainder of spring workouts.

On Saturday, head coach Dan Lanning informed media that top returning tight end Terrance Ferguson had been "shut down" for the final two weeks of spring due to injury, leaving only veteran Patrick Herbert and Sadiq to lead the group through drills and competition periods.

Reinforcements won't be able to join the team before the conclusion of spring though, offering Herbert and Sadiq bigger than expected roles for the final seven sessions of spring practice.

"Right now I just think he's drinking from a fire hose. There's so much information," Mehringer said on Saturday. "I asked him how much football he's learned in his first two or three months, and he was like 'Coach, I did not see that part coming'.

"He's been awesome. He very rarely makes the same mistake twice. He's super conscientious and a very smart kid. I think he's got a lot to show, but I think it's a little early right now. I think these next two weeks for him are going to be really really important."
