  1. Nate played the back up role, better than most.  Problem was legs where wasted, if I recall correctly, he had knee issues and just recovered when he took over for DT at the WSU game and tried to run a QB sweep left when his knee blew out just as he was going for the TD.  Brian Bennett finished the game for him I believe.  Brian was a better version of AB but had less patience waiting for plays to develop.  He was IMHO a better QB version of Masoli missing Jeremiah's Truck You size though.

  2. I think a few have hopefully gotten their degrees and move on to finding a career outside of football.  Many of the ones listed, hopefully took advantage of the education and degrees.  Dorlus,  DJ Johnson, Stevens IV and Hill would benefit from another year under a more organized, developmental staff while showing some ambition and leadership growth.

McCormick has spent the majority of his time at Oregon, recovering from some injury rehabbing trying to see the field.  So different a result from Pharaoh Brown, who's injury was nearly life threatening yet seemed to make it in the pro's.  I hope McCormick, moves on to living a healthy life and gets into coaching others if the football bug is still in him.  Sometimes, it is not the playing of the game that you are destined for but the teaching and developing of others that is your true calling.  Best wishes to all the athletes and their decisions.

  3. People who have talent, can use that talent to succeed by being ambitious, driven and willing to put in the extra work.  Cristobal, did not develop the talent, he allowed some of that talent to flourish on its own.  While his coaching and schemes did not provide the conditions for others talents to be realized and developed.  He was a teacher that told you how to be rather than giving you the tools and knowledge to be the best you could be.

  4. Miami Fans,

I wish you the best of Luck with Mario, to change the U's direction.  Everyone should be proud of his or her team every season.  Pride reflected in the program, athletes representing your school.  Best Wishes.

As an Oregon Fan, I will say, I look forward to the opportunities that Dan Lanning represents to Oregon Football, HOPE.  Hope that Oregon provides an entertaining and competitive football team.  Hope that the coaches take young men and build strong, competitive athletes, that work as a team.  Hope that strong performances lead to consistent wins elevating the schools ranking at the highest levels.  Hope that success leads to athletes getting into the Pros or fulfilling educational goals and success in life.  Hope that the coaches realize the efforts may lead to upward mobility and national recognition with compensation.  GO DUCKS!

It feels like we got the Auburn version of Tyler Shough?

Oregon has recruited many QB's who have liked being the Clipboard carrier of the team, rather than compete for the starting job.  The last QB's I recall fighting for the job, Nate Costa/injury, Bryan Bennett/transfer.  I know there have been numerous QB's that have sought the job but did little to earn it.  Maybe for some, it was a job that filled a spot as they sought their degrees.

    2009 to 2021 Football Roster per GoDucks.com

Nate Costa (O Grad back up/injuries), Jeremiah Masoli (starter released/conduct), Darron Thomas (O early Grad backup starter),  Chris Harper (?), Dustin Haines (O Grad clipboard), Daryle Hawkins (O Grad clipboard/position change), Bryan Bennett (clipboard backup transfer), Brennan Doty (?), Marcus Mariota (O early Grad clipboard starter),  Jake Rodrigues (injury/clipboard transfer), Jeff Lockie (O Grad Clipboard), Taylor Alie (O Grad Clipboard), Ty Griffin (O Grad clipboard/position change), Morgan Mahalak (clipboard transfer), Vernon Adams Jr (Grad transfer starter), Travis Jonsen (clipboard transfer), Terry Wilson Jr (clipboard transfer), Dakota Prukop (Grad transfer starter/clipboard), Justin Herbert (O Grad back up/starter), Braxton Burmeister (starter transfer), Demetri Burch (?), Mike Irwin (clipboard), Tyler Shough (clipboard starter transfer), Bradley Yaffe (O Grad clipboard), Cale Millen (clipboard transfer), Robby Ashford (baseball clipboard), Jay Butterfield (clipboard), Anthony Brown (Grad transfer clipboard starter), A.J. Abbott (clipboard ?) and Ty Thompson (clipboard backup).

As you might see, too many of the QB's were happy to carry a clipboard.  Transferred out due to the level of hard work required or level of competition for Oregon Duck Starting QB.  Some transferred to find a system fit after spending time on the Clipboard Crew.  Injuries hampered others like Jake Rodrigues and Nate Costa.  While others were content with lesser roles.

I understand why a New Head Coach might want to reach out to the portal to cover his basis.  It allows for evaluation of the talent on hand in Ashford, Butterfield and Thompson.  Now, with Bo Nix in the mix, will we have good competition?  Does Ashford elect to try his hand at baseball full time?  Does Butterfield show he is ready for the job or happy sending in signals from the sideline?  Does the elite talent of Ty Thompson just expose the over rated recruit evaluation system of Rivals and ESPN.  We can only hope they will all compete to do their best with a coach that does his best to develop talent.

I will also say this needs to be managed by the coaches on staff now. The qb's and receivers should be in the know, first hand, not reading headlines.   Whether it was just a talk about how each of them will be on the same footing as any recruits or transfer, or a call before it happened.

These are still kids and we saw how Aaron Rogers reacted to the Jordon Love draft pick. Things need to be managed in a proactive way to keep all parties involved content.

Respect is earned and these guys on our bench deserve some respect from the new coaches. Let them know they will have a fair shot, and the receivers have a renewed chance to get to 1,000 yds receiving. It will be interesting to see how the roster reacts. I view this as the first big move by the new staff. What is going to happen with how they did it?

    Hayward,

I might be wrong, it could be that Lanning is sending a message right now.  Effort, work and commitment is being questioned of our QB room.  Two seasons ago, a veteran needed to be brought in due to the youth on the roster.  Shough, the incumbent, needed to adjust to the new scheme, yet transferred out prior to the start of the 2021 season.  It left two players entering their 2nd season with the Ducks, Ty Thompson the true freshman and AB a fifth year senior as the emergency veteran leader.  QB's waiting in the wings, Effort?

The issue seems to be that the three freshman, made no notable efforts to distinguish themselves above the talents of an average 5th year senior.  That does not look at all good.  So why would a new coach bet his reputation on that, he would opt for some experience.  In Bo Nix, Lanning has a QB with starting experience, mentoring qualities and should the Three Qb's not elevate their skills or get injured, a journeyman to step in.  That is taking care of business by the Head Coach.

It mystifies me that people think he has valid views on our QBs not having worked with them at all.

I would say that is his back up plan, if it is true, that the three back ups are not making efforts to push for the position.  How many are just comfortable putting in face time to get an education.  Some not comfortable putting themselves in harms way.  Not every player, has the goal of taking it any further.  If they leave, I would say that there was reason to have AB as the QB for this season.  Let the CREAM rise to the TOP!

  8. Nothing worse, than having a recruit who is not happy with your style, giving grief and cancer in the locker room.  The kids already here, have to wait and decide once coaches and schemes are decided.  As far as losing recruits, they may not fit the new system and getting all the current players on board is more important and less time messing with the dissatisfied ones.  Feels like a cleansing, just not happy with not moving on from AB, who does not help us in the future.  Should be doing what is best for the team, moving forward and see what we do have in our young QB's.

  9. On 12/18/2021 at 4:34 PM, Mike West said:

The kids need exposure and experience now.  Granted, they will be learning a new offense next year, so all we would see is their raw talent, including the ability to "see the field".

It seems to me the backups haven't been consistent enough to sustain drives.  That is typical of freshman ( as UW's fans experienced in the Apple Cup). I want to see how they've developed.

This game is a perfect time to learn the game against guys they don't see in practice.  Time to learn the speed of the game against a perennial winner.  Time to get ready for elite football.

I have the feeling that's kids will get developed and will be a much better product next year.  They deserve an opportunity to display their skills (which could be why they won't be showcased- teams may recruit them if they like what they see).

I find it hard to believe that THREE QB's, two with Three years in, Ashford and Butters, have no grasp of the system, playbook.  Shough showed us a he had trouble in making decisions and executing but the short training due to Covid and lack of practice easily explains that.  But we if you look at all the film, how much more time AB had, he barely eeked out consistent wins for Oregon.

I believe he is given unwarranted credit for the Ohio State win.  When to me, Ohio State, Cristoballed it, like we did against Stanford.  Still makes me sick to my stomach, watching it go down the toilet in the LAST TWO MINUTES, O M G, please stop the nightmares!  But again, just my opinion.

  10. Well, Pittman said it was B Mac and Cristobal who talked to him.  But can not believe, Mullens made him interim coach, makes no sense, I do not care about his experience.  Let him hang his hat elsewhere.  We need pro Oregon coaches to lead our young men from the time CM quit on us.  Not good on Mullens in my opinion.  Thanks for the heads up, call me disappointed than.

  11. Is it possible, that we sell OK that AB is the QB, so they practice loading the box and defend the run with AB?  Then you pop in a better passer to eat the D alive?  Or is the problem, the O line not able to pass protect for QB's that need time to read defense and WR progressions?  Because that Utah game, both Utah games were disasters and the last one, leaving AB in made NO SENSE!  This guy will not be your future and the Offense, needed a Boost that AB could not provide.  What was sad was the D was fighting, the O had no fight and was a NO SHOW.

  12. I believe that his aggressive playing style was toned down by Mario's DeRuyter Influence.  Avalo's D was aggressive, even when he was KR looked less impressive but both sides of the ball, seemed like playing it safe was the name of the game.  Speed up slow down of the Offense was just crazy, no team tempo.  Like get a lead, sit on lead, lose lead then Cristobal Chaos, playing not to lose.  Hated it.

  13. Especially, if they hold their opponents scoring.  Just surprised that so many, lost on recruiting, jumping on the Early Signing Period rather than waiting till after.  Quality recruits, should never worry about a top program, not having space for them.  Maybe if you are a low three star or mid four star maybe.  But with the coaches hired so far, I have a feeling we may be looking at coaches that can develop talent, rather than having the talent be such a high target as was with Cristobal.  I believe that Coaching mirrors the type of athletes chosen as in blue collar.  I may be wrong, my wife says quite frequently in her view, I am.  But she is a Beaver, at heart.  I love her still, though.

Now I'm wondering if the conservative bend don't break D was Mario's plan as well. I don't recall DeRuyter's Cal defenses being that soft. That team had way too many great players at all levels to be so bad on third downs all year against everybody.

I remember, when Mario ran to the side judge to call timeout in the Stanford game with less than 30 seconds on the game clock and it was just mass hysteria.  In that position, Oregon should KNOW what to do Defensively.  But it looked like Oregon was ill prepared and Mario calls a TO, giving Stanford a rest, to PLAN and get organized.

Then we had all those calls against us, CRAZY.  The pressure was on Stanford and we took our foot off their throat.  And gave them the game.  Glad he is gone, is all I can say.  If he was going to sit on a lead, He should have not played the Prevent, which he had his defense in, they were just attacking the middle and I think he understood they were just eating them up.

  15. Not sold on McClendon, going to Miami, He is a Receivers Coach.  They did a lot of blocking, while you have to bet that Receivers were not happy but much of the youth kept quiet.  Mycah, D Williams, not so much.  Loyalty in the WR corner that did not bolt.  While, the recruits bailed, they saw what happened, some maybe waiting to see hires, and coaches retained.  We shall see, as this young coach, is making a splash with young talent, so far and no veteran coaches as of yet.  Seriously believe that some Veteran coaches needed, for coaching and recruiting but the youth movement, for getting their teeth cut, interesting to say the least.  Three years average on experimenting before fans, get antsy though.

Oregon, currently has the luxury of having a young roster with the help of the Covid year but some recruits electing to forgo that year to try the pros.  I really do not see winning this bowl as a recruiting elevator for recruits, win or lose.  It will all be on those coaches hired, their ability to sell the team, scheme and development of talent moving forward.  Have to put up or shut up.  My Christmas gift this year, be better than Cristobal in 2022 and Oregon Wins, in my opinion.

  16. Move on, stay healthy, hurting your draft stock, makes NO Sense at all.  If DeRuyter is coaching defense, I am not sold, his skills can be anymore improved.  While others in the mix have reps and experience to show new coaching staff what they are capable of come the upcoming season.  Best wishes to those Ducks who are going to play in the upcoming bowl game, may you all play well and come out of it healthy for next season.

  17. If he brings a NC to Oregon, you do not think that some guy named Phil and his wife Penny would not build a statue or something, to say thanks.  Ahhhh, I hope they at least get a big smile on their faces, because so many have put so much into Oregon and all the student athletes to have the best chances to compete at a high level.  The mountain is high but the top can be seen just need to commit, execute and achieve, In Ducks I believe.

  18. I think there are great athletes who are or could be great coaches.  Michael Jordan, is a high driven athlete who looks to have the ability to coach a willing pupil but does not look like he has the patience to waste on inattentive, people that know more. . . .  Tiger Woods has made his share of mistakes in life but he has the patience to get out there with his son, as his father did.  A built in connection.  A life mentor.

I believe that the teachers need to get to the kids younger, when their social ego's are not so large and kids are more receptive to instruction, guidance and commitment.  The athletes that seem to do well, have this nature in their Athletic DNA, KT, McKinely III, Dorlus and DJ Johnson, look like the types.  They do what ever is asked, to their best.  Take that to the Pro's, after your done go coach, teach others about PASSION, Hardwork and Commitment.

  19. It is about fits, Does he fit the system and players in Eugene, Not enough to bring his mom closer to him?  But she has all her family, as he does too, there.  Miami is a good fit.  Wish him well.  Hope family is good and brings that comfort level to him.  If it goes bad though, Do NOT BOO.  Do NOT CRITICIZE.  He will learn and get past his short comings to be a better coach.  Who you got in line to offer him $12 mil per year, JUST in case?

  20. This is a chance for Moorhead to give light to the hidden talents of Oregon.  For the Interim Coach to show case his talents and the talents of any others still on the Oregon payroll looking for a job.  I hope that Salave'a, has a chance to stick as DL coach, Co-Defensive Coord.  That the CB coach Chance, WR Interim HC McClendon and Feld are retained.  Feld can not be blamed for injuries, unless it occurs in strength and conditioning.  His job is to safely build up muscles and flexibility through a controlled process of weights and stretching.

Athletes need to have film of themselves in action for the new coaches to evaluate the talent in the cupboard.  Were the fits are as staff is assembled, to scheme for the talent on the roster, not what was not seen and that is alot!  I am hoping that the DC sees a better fit for the talent on defensive backs and safetys.  DeRuyter or Cristobal messed that all up with weak DB and Safety play, always a shovel holder there, when LB or Strong Safety needed in the middle Bassa as the Rover, like Eddie Pleasant, Terrance Mitchell, Derrick Malone Jr

Love DJ Johnson, he has the talent and heart to make or break a team. We should clone this guy!

Bounced from defense to offense to help the team due to injuries.  Was great as a Tight End and blocking TE.  Then moving back to DL and did wonders there also.  Need to get this young man involved, Oregon owes him that, on top of that a team guy.
