So now we only have one quarterback who has experience, and I am not sure he is the season-long answer.  The learning curve for quarterbacks is much longer than the patience curve of the fans...

    Tyler Shough vs. WSU_Eugene Johnson.jpg

We have this unusual year that includes a new coach, new system and a seasonal disruption caused by a world wide pandemic.  We have a fanbase that does not see the potential of a young player whos recruiting list includes the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, FSU and changed his commitment from U of North Carolina.  But this could have far more damaging implications to future recruits considering all the transfers, coaching staffing changes and lack of players being coached up to get into the NFL.  Be careful for what you wish, remember a guy named Joe Burrow from the Ohio State.  Shough, best of luck to you, may you see success in your future.  Once a Duck, Always a Duck. Go Ducks go.

  2. The chance at a scholarship sooner, sounded like the issue to me.  Until they have signed and filled out paperwork, is the lock to commitment, I believe.  Other than that, it's a persons word, whatever that means, today.  But just makes you look, a bit foolish, IMHO.  Life is about going out and making it your own.  When you have setbacks, reaching out to those you trust to guide you in the right direction.  Good Luck young Feely.  Your not done with Life decisions and I wish you the best of luck, going forward.

  3. My hope is, that maybe Avalos, Arroyo or the Beavers might be able to upgrade with one of these talents.  Knowing a coach or a program does not mean you have success but maybe the year under the mentorship of the Oregons Coaches and Strength Coaches helps on another program.  You have only so much time and before you know it, your a graduate with a "what do I do next?" problem.

  4. Rather Be,

I love it, kind of what I saw too.  ISM was asked to take the kind of role that Dye held for three years, his first being a learning year.  ISM was no Dye but he is a stud, just not as vocal as Dye.  Love Coach Aliotti, imagine HIM with the talent we have now.  BUT he put that talent into the NFL- Eddie Pleasant, Jordan, Buckner, Paysinger, Chung, Bird, Alonso the list goes on.  That is coaching up.  He had great help from Pellum, Neal and Coach Azz.  This kind of results shows a recruit that if they show up and excel they can put you in position to succeed at the next level.

  5. I think the problem is we just lost our DC and just hired a New One.  We have some movement in our staff, Heyward leaving and some other support staff, are we finished?  Do we look like the kind of organization that can coach up and not stagnate or regress perceived talent going into the NFL.  Great recruiting does not translate to poor coaching into player success down the road.  Put up or shut up says the Alabama's and the Ohio's recruiters to the talent.  "Our Record" speaks for itself.  Tough to beat that Coach Cristobal. . .

"The personnel set in his scheme is what let's him be flexible without having to sub."

I like this philosophy!  How many times did  the defense get caught trying to line up or get subs in late.  Offenses would go to hurry up and we would be penalized for 12 or look unready at the snap.  Too many personnel groups caused problems for defense by smart offensive coordinators.

Oregon, looks winded on defense, especially the line and backers.  We used to do this to the opponents and our defensive lines were long and fast.  KT is that and more in a nutshell.  Get these boys some reps and get them fast, let the Stash get them strong.  Finally, Eddie Pleasant was a Linebacker playing safety and if I recall correctly, was not great against the pass but blew up the screens and run defense.

Good point EzDucksit, Oregon could do a lot better at getting non first string players into the game to gain experience. I would like to see every QB coached to be very good at a couple of different plays, and used much like Brown was used last season. This would give them real game time experience that would help them improve even faster.

My problem with the QB situation, is then you tell the opponent what may be coming, just like our Running Backs told teams what might be up.  And how many times, have we left a high level player in at "Garbage Time" just to get injured and lost for multiple games or the season.  I'm just a believer that MC sells opportunity to the kids but coaching lacks.  My impression is that they might not get enough reps on the field due to coaches corrections.  Where as Chip would get the film and correct in the classrooms, which allowed for many reps in the field.

I just wish, we had Chips very well organized practices with Cristobals recruits.  But we really need coaches to start producing talent shortly or the recruits will give up on making it to the league, through Oregon.

  8. This Just in, see how I did that, seeing him play in the game was a treat.  But I knew fairly soon that the coaching was letting him down.  His talent and desire to win showed but the coaching failed to put him position to succeed.  Why else fire a coach that had the talent but did not use it well.  Mario, you watching this. . . .

Yes, we go back to what Mario told us, that he would keep everything the same, just, "do it with bigger, better players". "Prevent offense" is not keeping everything the same. Scoring the 21 points in the 4th quarter to put the other team away is not only more entertaining than playing the clock out, it has fewer variables  that could trip you up.

What about giving the "next men up" the chance at some important game experience?  Trusting them to be ready for when a starter goes down, in the future.  Reps, is what coaches tells you, a player needs to get better.  That is part of the draw to a program, since the four game limit against eligibility started for freshman players.  Gave them a taste of college while coaches got glimpses of talent in games.  I would take 10 points from second and third string players along with giving up 7 points, it makes our future stronger.  Allows for talent evaluations while letting iron sharpen iron.

Yes, Mario is on the verge of superstardom. If he had better game management against Oregon State and Cal the Ducks would have been walking into the Fiesta Bowl with a storyline of “Undefeated Oregon snubbed by Playoff Committee” instead of the default Pac-12 Champs. At that point they would have been 6-0, and 21-2 dating back to the last loss of 2018.

However, as Kayvon Thibodeaux’s grandma would say “if ifs were fifths we’d all be drunk.”

That’s the key. A lot of ifs left on the table and extra Ls in the record book. I would venture to say that out of Cristobal’s nine losses almost all were the result of bad game management: 2018 Stanford, 2018 Utah, 2019 Auburn, 2020 Oregon State, 2020 Cal.

That will be the key going forward, will the in game coaching be at a high level? Settling for field goals on 4th and goal, punting from midfield in the fourth quarter, becoming too conservative with leads are all things that are concerning to me. The inability to put an opponent out of their misery is the anchor of this teams potential.

The very promising things outweigh the negative. There has only been one entirely inexplicable result, 2018 Arizona. Slow starts a few times as well, but the team rallied in those. The hire of Joe Moorhead is a fantastic move, and Andy Avalos was as well. The number one thing though is the recruiting. It’s more important than ever, top talent is being consolidated at the top unlike ever before. The lack of talent at key spots and depth overall is what really hurt the program, and Cristobal has done as well as one could hope to get Oregon up a tier. This is the number one factor to being a consistently elite program.

I am not entirely sold on Cristobal yet. I’m giving him a partial mulligan for 2020, and I’m as excited for the future of the program as I was at this time last year. Taking a look at the college football landscape and Mario is positioned as well as anyone to be the next star coach. It’s going to take some luck, and things outside of Oregon’s control. Mostly he’s got to be better at game management, you can’t lose to inferior teams because you’re afraid of losing to them and play conservatively.

I am in agreement with the last paragraph here, especially the last sentence.  You can NOT expect to succeed or your team to excel, if you don't have the confidence in them or the coaching.  This is where Cristobal fails in my opinion.  Coach Saban, his former mentor, has to constantly replace coaches due to the success of his teams.  He is a "Next Coach Up" kind of guy.  Talent is NOT his problem as far as players and coaches, winning has seen to that.  I just hope that Cristobal does not become a Texas, USC, Tennessee or FSU that gets the recruits but can not put the leadership and coaching to lead them to success.

  11. Kenyon has had running, receiving, kickoff and punt return touchdowns during his four year career at Oregon.  He was a solid return man even after sustaining a concussion while awaiting the ball during a punt in a 2010 WSU game.  Throughout 2010 to 2011 he was the primary back up to LMJ, before taking over the starting role and having an outstanding 2012 season. As far as Oregon running backs are concerned, he is ranked 3rd, below Royce Freeman, LMJ and above Derek Loville.  Pretty impressive company, if you ask me.

  12. KT:  Plays with Purpose, knows what he wants and puts in the work, leads by example.  I thought Noah was showing some leadership too, its in his genes.

DJ Johnson, I believe he will be the Special TE, just give him the ball and let him block for the RB's.  Alex Forsyth, center, I thought was solid as the leader for the O line.

Hall and Verone should be some difference makers this fall.

  13. The next Leader will have to consider the relocation of Conference HQ, Conference expansion or how to prevent Top Schools USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington from going independent, or jumping ship to another conference.  This situation would have a big effect on the TV Deal.  I would like to think that Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St maybe revisited by the new Commissioner to improve the reach and marketability we need IMHO.  Nevada as a potential HQ, may not be such a bad place depending upon future expansion, Texas has seen a lot of Corporations relocating there because of the California issues.  Something to consider in our ever changing world.

  14. I would compare him to Jeff Maehl but liked the energy he brought to the defense too.  Some interesting decisions by coaches, in my mind.  Was sad to see him enter the portal.  But so much indecisions about offense/defense by coaches, factors into players decisions.  Daewood Davis is such a great team player, that his goals get overlooked by coaches choices.  Best of luck to him also going forward, Always a Duck!
