I do believe Helfrich had a culture problem within the program developing and it manifested in 2016. If he was save his job he was going to need to revamp the Oregon culture, which obviously didn't happen.

This is why I think he had to go, from stories about that time the team had turned on MH. Kelly created a culture, and whatever shortcomings he had as a coach, "The Blur" and 46-7, covered them up

  2. My lasting image of Helfrich is that the chair he sat in for their post game interviews was too big for him. He wasn't hired because Oregon thought he was a great head coach; he was just as close to Chip as there was going to be. It was unfair but Helfrich took the job, and it worked for a while, but the gas ran out and was running on fumes. He might have been able to get it going but I think it was the right decision to move on.

Now part of this to me is I believe Ohio State didn’t want to play us three times, so they played possum the entire year after they lost in Eugene. They had way more talent than they featured against Michigan, and I believe they did that on purpose. I’m not sure they wanted to lose, and they missed two FGs, but they definitely masked what they had intended for OBD, and I’m not sure they wanted to show it in more than once.

Match that with the fact OBD really shouldn’t have gone undefeated. In fact losing to Penn State would have been the perfect wake up call

I can definitely get behind Ohio State not wanting to play OBD 3 times, they didn't WANT to lose to Michigan, but they were more interested in the end game. OBD would definitely have been better off if they had lost the CCG and traded places in the CFP with PSU.

That’s what I’m talking about. I believe DL must take on more direct supervision of both coordinators. Especially Lupoi, because I don’t think Lupoi understands what it takes to shut down elite talent. Lanning does.

Really can't have a worse shortcoming in a DC than not grasping the concept of shutting down the opposition. can't have talent like Matayo, Bear, Thieneman ...not utilized properly.

The only thing Chad Bowden is managing is recruiting, where he is doing a stellar job to date.

Much of Bowden's success is due to Cohen getting SC's NIL collectives organized and stepping up with NIL money, although it seems that SC is overpaying for untested talent.

    "Stellar!" image.png

I say that USC's NIL collectives are organized like the contestants in "Supermarket Sweep" just picking up and filling their carts, not looking so much at the contents.

I like Mighty RJ Young's OBD Prediction! There is a vote for Not-A-Lot's Clemson and one for Penn State.

I do too, and by the end of the season, Thieneman will be the No.1 safety in the country! I appreciate the comment that Penn State is a team Oregon, "knows it can beat", but that was last season. 11-1 is a nice floor.

Heck, I'm worried Indiana is going to drop 35 on our defense. And they don't have an elite OL, or three elite WRs.

This I can't go with, no elite OL or WR's? If that can put up 35 than OBD will be fighting for their lives against Northwestern,

I'm beginning to wonder if Lupoi and Stein go full blown timid in big games.

The Rose Bowl showed how important a Coordinator is.

That Ohio State win is the only time I've seen DL actually be aggressive (well he actually did the same thing in Seattle, but Nix just happened to whiff three times in that game). He actually called out exactly what to do against Ohio State in the Ducks v Them video (which they promptly dropped as a strategy in the Rose Bowl).

Yes. The decisions against UW was Lanning playing his game, the way he wanted to. Decisions aren't bad because they didn't work.

Teams need to fear us like they did when Chip was HC.

I guess there was fear, but with Chip it was more just total bewilderment. 2019 LSU created fear, and I don't know if any passing attack is coming close to that one, but close will win games.
