  1. The NCAA only keeps 4% on the $1 + billion of revenue, fair? I suppose they are doing a better job than lavish Larry was doing for the Pac-12, but with the new rules going into effect the revenue is no longer going to be the boondoggle of money it was in the past. The endorsement deals some athletes are going to make in the near future is going to start effecting the bottomline of this bottomless pit of revenue for the NCAA and some universities. Will this be an advantage to the University of Oregon which knows how to take advantage of marketing opportunities, or the bigger institutions? The Covid-19 hit is a short term loss, the athletes hit to revenue has just begun. Pretty soon the '7 for 7' t-shirt money is going to go straight to Seven Mcgee and not to the university. Things are beginning to change beyond the transfer portal Bill Walton equated to Tinder portal. The games are just beginning.
  2. First off this is the perfect topic to discuss because I don't think anyone can definitively say they know how Dana Altman wins like he does. All we can do is offer ideas, which is what we all do best. The question is how does he win every year like he does? You can't say he brings in his guys and he knows how to pick them. His first year at Oregon he won with Kents guys and won the CBI tournament against his Creighton team! If that wasn't astounding enough he has continued to do it no matter who leaves, or who gets injured. His teams peak at the end of the season and his student athletes do what every coach dreams about, every year. His teams become teams and get better, no matter what. Is it because he is unflappable, that just might be part of it. I don't think I have ever seen Altman lose his cool, or blame a player. He has a plan and meticulously puts it in place. Any deviation from the plan is expected and he adjusts. There are too few coaches as coolheaded as Altman, and it is almost like he is insouciant, but he just has a plan, it seems. The other question, is he just that much smarter than the rest of the coaches? His strategic plays in a game are legendary, to me. It is almost like he sees things nobody else does. I tend to lean towards this scenario most. Altman is a genius, almost a Clark Kent type of a coach. He looks like the simple guy, but when basketball is concerned watch out for what is underneath that simple outfit he has on the outside. He could also be accused of being a Svengali, but that would be deemed a negative. I do think he has amazing influence on his players and how the games turn out. He knows how to shut down players and instill a belief in his players like few can. They believe the guy, follow the guy and benefit from it. All I know is if he knew football I would want him on the sideline helping out Cristobal.
  3. The NBA has crossed the threshold for me on being able to look beyond the ugly scene of owner, player entitlement. The owners hold cities hostage with arena demands, and players think they are all to do, because they dunked a basketball, while too many can't make a free throw. I can't watch professional basketball, but used to be an avid fan. I don't know if it is just a sign of me getting older, I am getting older, but not old, by the way. I will say if Dr. J, or the Big O was playing in Portland tonight, I would be there in a heart beat. As for the owners, since when did they become bigger than the game. I suppose no sport is worse than the NFL with Jerry Jones, but at least they have the Packers. Basically I try to focus on the competition on the field and never listen to the radio shows Charles mentioned. I suppose the uniforms, pads and helmets of football help me get past the look at me attitude of most pro athletes. What is a franchise player anyway? Actually don't tell me, it will just make me sick!
  4. I am not sure which one makes me more ill, the billionaires who need a salary cap to make sure they don't spend too much money, or the players who feel disrespected because they weren't offered $20 million a year. I am with you, just serve me the sausage, that was made in a USDA inspected plant. Don't tell me about, or show me how the sausage was made.
  5. I also want to be clear I don't think Oregon should promote just anyone for the Heisman. If a recruit is a 5* recruit, not enough to be promoted by the Oregon Football Program. If a kid has a good game, or great season not enough. If a player comes to Oregon with lofty goals, works towards those goals, even if he is a 2* recruit, and achieves them we should be all in in promoting the kid for whatever awards warranted. Student athletes should know if they come to Oregon and excel, we have your back, and will put you front and center. Some may remember the billboard the next year the Ducks put up in New York. It is time for Oregon to get into the promotion game again. Not that Cristobal seems to need the help, but why not!
  6. Walton also saw that the press wasn't handled by UCLA. 'Why wasn't UCLA ready for the press.' The Ducks have the talent and the skill players to a ways in the tourney. Should be fun to watch! What I saw was an intensity few teams have. I will start a thread soon, but what Altman creates is unique and hard to quantify. His teams just get it done as the season progresses.
  7. Like the article states, maybe him not playing this year will allow the doubt to drop him in the draft. It would be amazing to see him on a good to great team and protecting, creating holes for an offense that is a threat. I do agree the comparison thing isn't helpful, but is expected out of a pundit. We all like to make comparisons, but everyone needs to become their own unique person with flaws and exceptional abilities! Penei is definitely one of those guys who seems to have found one of his unique abilities early in life. The guy is a monster of an offensive lineman, with much more talent left to tap. It is an amazing fact that he isn't that old. and has much untapped potential to come.
  8. I don't think it is a question of whether Thibs can win the Heisman, it is a question of whether Oregon should promote Thibs as a Heisman candidate? The answer to the second question is yes, that is the Oregon way. Thibs may not win the Heisman, but he deserves to be promoted as a Heisman candidate. When Joey Harrington was at Oregon that is what we did. The promotion of Joey as a Heisman candidate may have hurt Joey professional career, because he ended up getting more press and was a higher draft pick. This pick went to the Detroit Lions, a career killing team at the time. The promotion of Joey did bring an amazing amount of good press to the Oregon Football Program. This is what we need to do again, and the positive press will, again, help the program. Our defense will excite the next Thibs to come to Oregon. I only wish we had done the same for Ngata, a truly generational talent at the time. Maybe even start the promotion now to help influence JTT to sign on as the next great DE? Let JTT see what kind of support he can expect if he puts in the effort at Oregon?
  9. I wonder what uw will do to make sure they aren't in the hunt this year. Two years ago they laid down in the end zone. Last year they didn't show up to play the game. What will the dawgs think of this year to make sure they lose? I know, it is fun to pick on the dawgs.
  10. I too harken back to the days of the 1:00 kick-off. Seems like college football start times are now the toy of tv rights with little thought about the fanbase. Some of my fondest memories as a kid were Saturdays when there was a home game. Load up in the car and head to Autzen for a beautiful afternoon of Duck football. Might be a tailgate party before the game, and maybe a stop for dinner on the way home. The outcome of the game wasn't critical, you did know the Ducks would give it their all. The day was all about the Ducks experience. Writing about his makes me remember going down on the field and asking for chin straps. I still remember looking up at Dan Fouts and asking for his chin strap, great memories indeed!
  11. Oregon fan base isn't perfect, and if I see a fan stepping over the line I say something. If that fan has had one too many it may not be received perfectly, but I think it is the job of the larger group to keep everyone in line. The dawg fan base has those too and I hope they can work to reign in those overly excited fans as well. The difference is their delusion about how good they are and were. I think it was written somewhere about how the dawgs picked the colors purple and gold as it was connected too royalty. This mentality seems to permeate their fan base. They seem to feel like they are better than others. This is why I take great enjoyment in pointing out their actual place in history, along with their potential for the future. This delusion covers preseason as they are always, much like ND, going to be better next year. There are few fanbases which take greater joy in being preseason favorites and are indignant when they aren't favored. Sam Huard will become their beacon of hope for the next 4 years. Disappointment this season will met with hope for the next, as Sam's career will be the cycle of emotion for their program. That emotion will always be wrapped in the fact that Huard was the highest rated qb ever recorded and should be, will be doing better than he is now, much like the program. I completely agree with Ryan, they go through a cycle of complaining, and then excuse making. This is always preceded by the rational of they are the great, anointed program. They should be 'given' more respect. Fortunately Oregon knows you earn respect.
  12. Not sure there is a bigger Cristobal stamp which has been put on the program than the size of the O-line. Fortunately he is recruiting elite talent too, not just size. This can be seen on most positions as our LB's are bigger, WR's are bigger. One note is, at receiver at least, the little guys are beating out the taller, bigger receivers. I do hope we go back to picking up some speed guys. Few things put the fear into the defense like a guy who can blow by the DB and stretch the safety. I suppose the other ingredient is a qb who can get him the ball, but we are working on that!
  13. Wow, great source of information, well done. The only way we win, on this one, is to win on the field. Beating tOSU at home, priceless!
  14. Stony Brook, 1-10 against FBS schools, last one Utah State 62 SB 7. This is quite the recovery game, after tOSU. In the future it would be nice to see Oregon do the SEC thing, and schedule the game later in the season.
  15. Good point, but they are coached by a trojan! The nice stat, Marcus owned the dawgs and sc.
  16. You lost me when you inserted, (soccer) after football. Actually well done, amazing amount of research and an interesting take!
  17. Ok, Heisman Trophy winners, Oregon (1), OSU (1) dawgs (0). The fact that UW has won no mens NCAA titles in a conference that has won over 500 speaks volumes. Maybe UW should just have a women's program in the Pac-12? I will agree it is fun to take shots at the dawgs. I would also argue women in sports has an impact on college football recruiting. There are 3 4 year colleges with all men in this country, none with a D1 football program.
  18. The real issue with the dawgs is that they have won nothing. At Oregon the men have won 19 NCAA team championships and the women 14. At Washington the men have won 0 NCAA titles. Washington is proud of having made it to the playoffs, but they lost. They are also proud of their football title, but that wasn't official, and there were other issues with it too. At Oregon you see the intent to win and the history of winning. This is why I also urge Cristobal to recruit speed and leverage our Track program. The synergy between our football program and track program has allowed us to be a dominant program in the past and can help us in the future. It is surprising to me that we haven't seen more of this from, arguably, the greatest recruiter we have ever had. Clemson has 6 men's NCAA titles. WSU even has one and OSU has a few NCAA men's titles. You look at the other Pac-12 programs and they have much more than an almost championship or a claimed title. The Washington program is just hot air. This is why it is more likely we will win another 12 straight against them, than they are of ever winning a men's title. Without Petersen the dawgs are doomed. The dawgs claim they are a blue blood program. They wear the purple and gold to try and continue that farce. The dawgs aren't an elite program. They are, rather, descendants of decades of losers, and posers, nothing else.
  19. Few are considered the greatest when they haven't won a NCAA title, especially when another has. Howard Hobson, in the running for greatest coach at Oregon. At least in the conversation.
  20. So then this brings up an interesting talking point. Was Helfrich a better coach than Brooks? Are we really going to look at records and outcomes without context? I also loved Ernie, a great Duck player and coach. These earlier guys coached in Mac Court, and Autzen Stadium back when athletes gathered in hallways, out of the rain, and around chalkboards. They were all great and I would have loved to have seen Brooks or Harter with the support afforded our coaches now. I will agree to disagree with rating Oregon coaches, they were all important, significant and noteworthy in their own ways. Almost all of our coaches had their peaks at Oregon too.
  21. I firmly believe luck is all about opportunity meeting preparation. That is why I loved CK's next man up mantra. Everybody has to be prepared to win. A good friend and amazing salesmen loved to say 'no' was a great starting point to work from. You don't look for and expect a yes, you work from failure and then work harder toward success. This is also why I want to see a tough qb competition where there are two guys who know they got a fair shot and are the next guys up. Mac Jones didn't just turn tail when he wasn't the starter. He held for field goals and worked his tail off. Our luck will happen when we have a strong team of players, starters and next men up.
  22. Non-fiction at this point, and I don't like the story line so far. I wish the kid the best, but I wouldn't count on him turning around the TT program.
  23. "So Ducks fans, do you think Altman is the greatest coach in Oregon Men’s Basketball history?" This is like asking me to pick which of my children is my favorite. Dick Harter will always be one of the greatest coaches in Oregon history. What he did was special. Altman is an all-time great, but don't expect me to choose which one is better. Also don't forget Howard Hobson, the fast breaking coach who brought us the first NCCA championship. This is one more NCAA men's title than the dawgs have, still to this day.
  24. I believe his quote was Chip Kelly, and Chip's 'best stuff was when he was OC at New Hampshire.' Kind of a back handed complement. I found it interesting that he just likes to see and talk to people who look at the game differently. You have to keep creating O's or the X's will shut you down. A creative guy at a point in ones career where most coaches get set in their ways.
