Ouch - that first statement sounds a bit accusatory and egregious?  Do you really feel MC, JM and DeR don’t work hard?  Really?!

No doubt we got our azz handed to us last week on all sides of the ball. There are so many complexities to that “why” that I can’t answer.

Your second point I will agree with completely. Next game will prove the depth of coaching prowess (oh I almost can’t believe I said that!) and rallying around next man up.

    GO DUCKS!

You have cherry picked one sentence and took it out of context, leaving the meaning it was attached to dangling in the breeze!

If you look back, you'll see that I was referring to coaches during Herbert's final two years. This article by Steven Ruiz for the site theringer.com provides a lot of insight as to why he only truly started to blossom in the pros: https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/10/11/22716557/justin-herbert-chargers-leap-2021-browns-win

A quote by John Beck, a former NFL QB, quarterback trainer and Herbert's private quarterback coach, stands out:

"Beck says the Ducks coaching staff was more concerned with their young quarterback playing with a clear head rather than overcoaching his mechanics. Ideal footwork was seen as a luxury rather than a necessity, and getting Herbert prepared for Sundays wasn’t their biggest priority. They were trying to win games—and having their ultra-talented quarterback play loose was the best way to do it.

And this: “[Oregon] had footwork that they had set up within their system, but it was more of a frame of reference,” Beck said. “There weren’t nailed-down specifics … the coaches knew how talented he was, and they didn’t want him to get hung up on those throws. It was always, ‘Just let it go, Justin. Go get the next one. It’ll be fine.’ But he had a desire to know why he wasn’t making those throws.”

They knew how talented his was, but they didn't want to dig for the answer for off target catches, which Beck says was a timing issue and not "an overly complicated fix".

Do I think "JM and DeR" are working hard enough? Don't know, and DeR is the DC--this is where context matters. 🙂  How much is Moorhead working with the QB's? Hard to say, especially since they don't seem ready to play. I was referring to the 2018, 2019 seasons and Arroyo was the OC/QB coach. The only constant is MC and I don't think he's earning his keep so far.

His concern about burning a redshirt(s) if they had put in one of the backups at Utah during the most important game leading to a potential CFP berth, strikes me as backward. That means they've gone all season planning for ONE QB and have apparently not planned for injury. That's playing it safe to the max--maybe a leftover artifact from MC's training as a Secret Service agent. And we should note that AB did hurt his wrist during the WSU game as well as tweaking it at Utah. A redshirt may yet get burned.

Forum-ites comment often that players we recruit are star players who are hoping to go pro. Are coaches concerned about that? I think only if the talent is immediate and doesn't need much work.

In Herbert's case, they weren't concerned about it even though they recognized his incredible talent! I would think there should have been some focus from on high (MC) to get a good QB coach who could have worked with Herbert so that he could have performed here as he does in the pros now. If recruits are being sold any notion of "come here and we'll help develop you for the pros" then they might be hugely disappointed. Hence, my comment that maybe coaches don't want to work that hard.

  2. Watching Justin become Rookie of the Year last year was the beginning of the end for me on Cristobal and gang. I know there are a lot of excuses out there for why he wasn't more successful here but .... COME ON!

If the HC or OC or both couldn't recognize and develop his talent at Oregon do we really need to worry if any of them leave now? Maybe we haven't seen the young QB's get time because they just don't know what to do with the young players. Maybe they like going with AB because he's older, more experienced and they supposedly don't need to coach him up much. In other words, maybe as coaches they just don't want to work that hard for their millions.

There have been many good comments today. The team wasn't ready to play yesterday, that's for sure. I think the real measure of MC for the season and his long term trajectory in Eugene will be how he gets the team ready for the Beavs. We'll know in the first quarter.

  3. The CFP is all about sports politics, favorites and $$. Wins are just the prerequisites to get into the CFP 'talk'.

Head to head standings are only important if the 'right' teams (read mostly TV markets and networks) are considered, and the right teams might be goats offered to appease another team/conference down the line. A complete game can be anything the CFP wants it to be. It's all a big crap shoot on a weekly basis.

Fair enough, I respect, of course your POV. Having made known that it will be in your opinion, a grand day when Mario leaves, who would you prefer as a HC?

I don't have a specific preference. Yesterday's game reminded me too much, at times, of the pre-Bellotti days.

BTW--did anyone notice the lack of replays? I think RG3 will be a fine announcer someday.

I think the "academic prowess" comment made by Lake earlier this week really cut deep. Lake implied Oregon players are dumb... Oregon isn't as big of a research school as many schools in the pac-12 are but it is still a quality school.

You don't call another teams players stupid.

He didn't call the players stupid. This has been bent all out of shape.

It served it's purpose last week, maybe, but what is he going to be combustible about when the Cougs come to town? How will the media probe and prod for comments on the Beavs? On Utah? It's just bad form.

While you are entitled to your opinion I respectfully disagree on this one as this is football, not golf or tennis or something. Yeah emotions run high as it's pretty much war out there. What Cristobal said is not bad at all and it shows he has his players backs.

Whether it is football or not, it seems to me a coach should be a little more self aware than to spout off as he did with 3 more tough games ahead plus the championship game as well. It's helpful to know what kind of guy he is. Sure, he has his player's backs but I'd rather the energy went forward, not backward.

  7. On 11/7/2021 at 10:35 AM, Jon Joseph said:

How about: 'I'll be glad when the Cristobal era is over.'  This would seem to indicate to me that you would be happy if he was gone now? Is this an unreasonable interpretation?

    Yes, definitely unreasonable.

He won't be fired and I wasn't suggesting he should be. He make take another job at some point and I won't shed tears if he does. I have never thought he was a good fit for Oregon, and I thoroughly dislike what the offense has become.

What's wrong with CFB? 1 thing for certain, a coach can no longer have any private time with his team in the locker room post-victory.

Everything goes public. Everything becomes part of the unsocial media circle jerk.

Maybe MC relieved on his players to be smart enough to keep a private moment private?

It is of course your opinion which I respect, but if this is a fire-able offense? You call it juvenile, I see it as a comment to his troops after a hard fought victory. And I had no right to see it all.

Coaches have always been subject to leaked comments but now it's more immediate. Locker room privacy is never going to prevail and more mature staff know that. If Mario was relying on his players to be circumspect for him, well, that was foolish on his part. No right to see or know that? Hmm..

What are you talking about when you say "if this is a fireable offense"?

  9. Thoughts?

Although some don't like to admit it, Mario is a young head coach and he's now initiated himself by jumping into the deep end. He's tentative and careful as has been noticed by many here.

I imagine all newish coaches feel they must explain everything such as putting in young players and why when more experienced coaches would not defend all the details. Nothing wrong with it at all, and it's nice to see him speak more frankly. I think he pulled Thompson too early, but that's part of the learning curve, I suspect.

  10. Many good comments here.

Someone, somewhere coined the term "narrative engineers" and this is what we're all talking about. It's what sells. What brings in good ratings. What drives people to call in on call in shows. Most of what they say falls into the mindless drivel lane until the next play or next commercial and has, too often, more to do with their own opinion than actual truth. They talk stats and stories and they moralize. It's show biz and they get paid handsomely for it.

  11. When this team plays consistently and we see the same or similar performance in following games, then I think it's interesting to consider play-off potential. This was a nice win and we'll see what happens next week, but until then I won't get too excited.

Remember, Ducks won by 3 pts, holding on with a potential game tying field goal in the works. Not an overwhelming win.

  12. Mario Combustible has a very thin skin and a lot of anger behind that practiced veneer. As proof, his foolish request for fans to stop booing which is majoring in minors. He sets the team up against the fans while not being able to reach deeper--that most boos were meant for him and some of his staff.

The smart coach would have taken yesterday's win as the perfect opportunity to put the Cal game behind EVERYONE by just praising fans, especially those who travel, and get over it.

However, this is a coach, along with his asst. coach, who can't let a call go and both have temper trantrums on national TV.

  13. I don't think fans are unhappy with 5-1. And I don't think we are spoiled. I think fans are at a loss to explain how the team can look so poorly at times while being hammered with the message "Mario is a great, five star recruiter!!" The more we hear about recruits, (3+ seasons), the more we expect to actually see something on the field. Now we're hearing about the new, monstrous practice facility and you know that will be the hot topic on GameDay. Oh, and did you hear Mario can recruit? 😉 But, where is the substance to go with the 5-1 record?

We're seeing the results of a long time coaching staff and system being dumped for something new and shiny. Taggert was shiny, alright, but didn't have the coaching chops, in my view, and he obviously wasn't committed to any long to vision in Eugene. I'm not sure why Mario was promoted to HC except for the many comments of "oh the players love him". Well, that doesn't guarantee anything. But, did you hear he can recruit?! 😁

I don't think Mario thinks anything is broken. If he wants to do himself a favor and not end up in a love-hate relationship with his fan base, he could pull his message together and start to educate/coach the fans on his vision beyond offensive line play. What IS his system?  Not easy to describe so far and not obvious to the fans at games.

  14. Mario has had trouble staying off the field during play and UO has had sideline warnings in earlier games.

I don't know if this happens all the time, but I've seen Feld stay close enough to pull him off the field when he looks like he's going to go batshizz crazy.

  15. Great article, Charles, and I agree.

I don't know if players are really much affected by boos and I think they know it's mostly directed to the coaching staff. These are tough kids, even if a bit pampered in some cases. If a coach sees booing as disloyal then maybe he's too soft to do his job.

If you're tough enough to play college ball, you should be tough enough to hear some boos. What I don't like is when a coach is interviewed and asked about the boos, he doesn't own it and deflects it to the players and says something like..."gee, I don't know why the fans are booing".

Also, my opinion, booing doesn't make for 'an ugly fan base' but indicates the football intelligence level of fans.
