Well .... I'm 80 years old and I can hit 50% of my FTs. And .... I suspect that if you glued me to the floor somewhere near the key, I'd get a defensive rebound or two. Good grief but this game is going to make me tear out my remaining hair.
Maybe I should take up golf.-

For we old b-ball playing guys .....................
Two old guys, who both loved to play baseball, made an agreement that the first one of them to die would return to tell the other if there was baseball in heaven. Sure enough, right after one of them died, his spirit appeared to his friend and said, “I have good news and bad news.”
“The good news is that there is baseball in heaven! The bad news is. . . you’re pitching on Friday!”

Another huge "If only" for OBD. If only Boucher hadn't blown out his knee in the Pac-12 Tourney...
But Bell played huge in this game (as did others) ... almost getting a triple double. I agree. Boucher would have made a difference in the Final 4. What were his block numbers? 3 or 4 per game? He intimidated players driving to the hoop.
This 2017 team was full of really tough guys like Ennis, Boucher, Bell, Brooks, Dorsey and Pritchard. -
I just watched the 2017 Elite 8 game where OBD smoked Kansas. It has me jazzed up for the tourney this year. GO DUCKS!
(Oh, and in that game I saw just ONE play involving the weave offense. Ah, better times ..............)

Unfortunately, I think this says it all.
"Oregon ranks No. 7 in the Big Ten and tied for No. 115 in the country in rebounding at 35.8 per game. As for where the Ducks rank nationally in field goal percentage defense, it's No. 132 at 43.0 while giving up 70.8 points per game which is tied for No. 144."

If anyone can really answer this, I'd be amazed. It really is logic defying that this team has an above .500 record, let alone deserving of a 5 seed. They don't really run a discernible offense that I can see. Every possession is freelance, lately it hasn't ended with an early 3, so that's progress.
Bamba is the only guard that can really get to the basket, and that's usually just him barreling to the rim. This lack of actual plays I think is a large part of the rebounding trouble, no player really has a specific place to be. The undersize of the back court is problematic on offense and defense. The guards can't really do much to get a shot, other than a defended mid range, so a 3 it is. On defense, the guards can go where they want, forcing the bigs to help, which is why the opponent scores so much in the paint.
The better the back court can do, the better chance for a win, Sweet 16 or loss in the first round, which Altman's teams haven't done yet.
The only designed play that I saw today was the clear out for Angel. I don't consider the inside out or outside in to be "designed" plays. (And those weren't working either.) The PnR plays were either poorly designed or poorly executed. This has been true all season.
And I agree with you 30D about the rebounding trouble.
What ARE Altman's designed plays?? Anyone?
-
Someone please help me understand the Ducks offense. I admit that it has been 60 years since I played bball, but this team is a head scratcher.
First, what kind of pick and roll do they do on offense? Rarely do the defenders need to switch and when they do, the appropriate one on one rarely follows. And regarding the PnR, I don't know why the guard and forwards leave so much space for the defender to trail. (See James Harding for the picture perfect way to run the PnR.)
Also, this weave offense that Altman prefers seems to end up more often than not in a poor, late clock drive, or dribbling and passing around the arc until a bad, rushed shot is required. A couple other called plays are used infrequently (and seem to have reasonably good success).
Against Indiana, OBD double teamed with alacrity. Against Mi. St. not so much.
I dunno. Those offensive rebounds ... what was the total for Mi. St.?
I realize that the team lacks to killer players AND that Altman has had tremendous success. So OBD success is really laudable. But dang ... I'm still just really frustrated by the inconsistent play of the team.

Honestly, I just thought it was the flow of the game. Underdog team, playing at home, big comeback, playing without their best player, just kind of set it up to be more excited about the prospect of an upset.
I am now confused on that last inbounds, I thought you didn't lose the right to run the baseline after a timeout. I tried to look it up online but the best I got was that you can run the baseline after a timeout, but it doesn't say if you lose this ability after calling a second timeout.
Just frustrating how we seem to not make anything easy on ourselves, we always seem to play to the level of our opponents, if we hit some of our open threes we win comfortably, but Bamba and Angel have been awful shooting the ball recently. Bamba just looks completely lost unless he's going to the hole.
Great post. Bamba better stay really late practicing the 3-point shots. His wide-open shots looked like he had a bad case of the yips.
Regarding the inbounds rule ... here you go. The announcers had it wrong.
- Running the Baseline: This occurs after a made basket. In this situation you are allowed to run the baseline in order to inbound the ball. You do not have to stay in one position. If under pressure from the other team, running the baseline can help you find an open teammate for a proper inbound. If you have to call a timeout before making an inbound pass in this situation, you will still be able to run the baseline after returning to play.

I was really disappointed in in D-line play. If you include Tuioti and Matayo, the line had a total of FIVE tackles ... and 3 assists. Burch and Matayo had ONE each. The line was totally outplayed by tosu's O-line. Unfortunately, OBD O-line played a similarly miserable game. Except for DG and Boettcher, the entire team was outplayed. But I see no particular fault with any individual player or coach. It seems our boys were outplayed in almost every segment of the game ... by a superior team. It happens.
Next season is only 8 months away. (Sigh.)
