Oregon Began UW Coaching Purge — Here's How These Guys Landed Change was necessary because the Huskies last year put on their all-purple uniforms hoping to pull off an upset of the Ducks at home in the rain, following a pair of close road victories, and over a matter of hours they watched the program blow up. 7. Bo Nix is having more fun than anyone in college football The Oregon quarterback shed what was supposed to be and became something even better: A Heisman candidate. Nix started 34 games at Auburn and won 21 of them, with much of the Tigers’ fanbase feeling the physically gifted but inconsistent quarterback wasn’t living up to his 5-star expectations. His name hitting the transfer portal in December of 2021 came as a surprise, but one not exactly greeted with disappointment in Auburn. Change, it seemed, would be good for everyone. 12. With Ulofoshio Fully in the Mix, Will UW Defense Become More of a Stopper? Linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio — who just might be the most talented player among this collection of Husky defenders and a solid NFL prospect some day— came off his year-long injury absence last week to get a taste against Oregon State and should be ready for extended duty and maybe even a starting assignment on Saturday afternoon against Oregon. Ulofoshio's return and the timeliness of it can't be understated. His absence 12 months ago was one reason the Ducks ran at will on his teammates. He's someone who's piled up 18 tackles against Stanford, 16 against Oregon State and 14 against Utah n his career. NFL scouts see a little Bobby Wagner or Mike Singletary in him. 13. Oregon Week is Never Dull for Kirkland, Who's Seen it All He's won, he's lost, he's had a game cancelled and his coach got fired. "As much as I want to treat it like it's just another game, and it has to be handled that way, but also you get a little emotional and it certainly means more," he said this week. "Certainly for me, Oregon is in my backyard and I have a lot of friends and family that did go there, but as you know I'm Washington and it's in my blood through and through." Yes, he is the son of Dean Kirkland, who was a UW offensive guard and an all-conference player three decades before him, so state boundaries weren't going to dictate where the younger Kirkland played. 19. Jon Wilner's Pac-12 picks: Why Washington-Oregon rivalry is about to become an even bigger deal The Huskies and Ducks are already key players in Pac-12 football. Once USC and UCLA depart in the summer of 2024, the balance of power will shift forcefully to the upper left corner of the conference footprint.
