  2. 10 major takeaways from Oregon's 63-19 blowout win over California With twice as many yards, three times as many points, and nine times as many offensive touchdowns, Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning was a bit more frustrated than you might have expected him to be on Saturday night after his team’s 63-19 win over the California Golden Bears. His team had just improved to 8-1 on the season behind a six-touchdown performance from his quarterback, and his defense held the opposing offense to just 12 total points. Despite all of that, Lanning was intent on focusing on the things that needed to improve. “There are moments in that game that I certainly wish we could have back and execute a little bit better,” Lanning said after the game. “I think we put ourselves in some tough positions at times and didn’t play to our standard of play, certainly in the first half.” While he’s certainly right, there was a lot to like for Oregon fans on an afternoon where the offense totaled 597 total yards, 444 of which came through the air. There are things to clean up against improved competition going forward, but for the most part, it was another impressive Oregon victory. Here are some of our biggest takeaways from the game... 10 major takeaways from Oregon’s 63-19 blowout win over California DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM 10 major takeaways from Oregon’s 63-19 blowout win over California

  4. Tez Johnson responds with career-day following mistake on opening play The first pass thrown to Tez Johnson did not go to plan, but seemingly everything after did. Brother Bo Nix threw Johnson's way on the opening play of Saturday's game with California. The ball ended up in the chest of Golden Bear Patrick McMorris after it popped out of Johnson's hands and into the air. Some head hanging may have followed in the seconds after, but those had a short shelf life, as Johnson was in the end zone soon for the first of seven Duck touchdowns in their 63-19 blasting of California. 6. Joe Freeman: Oregon Ducks look like a national championship contender It arrived in silence. Bo Nix didn’t learn about the Oregon Ducks’ heart and will in a practice or a film session. He didn’t decide they were poised to overcome that demoralizing defeat in Seattle after a rah-rah pep talk or a memorable team meeting. No, it was in the depressing aftermath of that gut punch to the Washington Huskies, in the solemn stillness of a despondent postgame locker room at Husky Stadium... 10. Game recap: No. 6 Oregon cruises to 63-19 win over Cal Well, the key to the game this week was to continue dominating the turnover margin. Tez Johnson’s drop-turned-interception on the first play of the game was instead how things began. Steve Stephens IV’s interception less than 3 minutes later got things back on track. Casey Rogers followed with a strip sack later in the quarter and when things really started to feel normal again, more turnovers ensued. A mistimed snap while Johnson was in motion, resulted in a Cal scoop and score. Four total turnovers in just the first quarter alone. Chaos was beginning to ensue, but it didn’t last very long. After the two turnovers, both of which arguably caused by the weather conditions, the Ducks (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) did a 180 in what ended as a 63-19 victory. This article is a good recap of the game and good read... 11. Nix Accounts For Six TDs, Ducks Beat Cal Bo Nix accounted for nearly 400 yards of offense with six touchdowns, and his adopted brother Tez Johnson piled up 255 all-purpose yards as the No. 6 Oregon football team kicked off November with a 63-19 win Saturday over California before 54,046 fans at Autzen Stadium. The Ducks (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) overcame a slow start that saw them double their turnover total for the season, to four, and commit nine penalties. But the prolific duo of Nix and Johnson more than made up for those sloppy moments, and the UO defense held an opposing offense to one or fewer touchdowns for the sixth time in nine games this season. "We put ourselves in some tough positions at times, didn't play to our standard of play certainly in the first half," UO coach Dan Lanning said. "But I thought our guys overcame that and … showed flashes of what we can be." 14. Ducks find footing after sloppy start, blast Cal by 44 Chaos reigned supreme in the opening quarter at Autzen Stadium. Two Duck touchdowns were wiped out and four total turnovers were lost with one going for a Cal score. But when the sloppiness cleared, Oregon's improved execution allowed them to pull away for a lopsided 63-19 victory over the Golden Bears. Bo Nix's first pass may have resulted in a turnover, but the fifty-year senior wound up with a Heisman-worthy day. Nix accounted for six touchdowns (four by air and two by foot) and threw for a season-high 386 yards. Brother Tez Johnson acted as Nix's favorite targets. Johnson caught two of the four aerial scores and finished with a career-high 12 catches and another career-best 180 yards. Troy Franklin added 79 yards and his 10th touchdown of the season. Evan Williams led the team with eight tackles and five other players finished with six. 15. Social media reacts to Oregon's 63-19 blowout vs. Cal behind 6 Bo Nix TDs It was a day full of helpful stats for Bo Nix and his Heisman campaign, and a game that showed how valuable Tez Johnson can be for this team. While the Ducks will leave knowing that they have a lot to clean up going forward, they can at least feel good about the fact that they took care of business and left a chaotic Saturday of college football with a win. 16. Instant Reactions: Ducks don't fall into the Bears' trap with huge win It would have been easy to overlook a team such as California since the game with the Bears came after a huge road win at Utah and before playing USC. But the Ducks showed that they just aren’t built that way as their focus was completely on the Bears and the final score of 63-19 bore that out. Wide receiver Tez Johnson had his best game as a Ducks with 12 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Bo Nix furthered his Heisman numbers with 386 yards passing and six total touchdowns, four passing and two rushing. Unfortunately, a damper was put on the entire day, which saw Cal running back Jaivian Thomas go down with a serious injury where he needed to be carted off and leave Autzen in an ambulance. With the win, Oregon moves to 8-1 overall, 5-1 in Pac-12 play and its playoff resume just got that much better... 21. Ducks Wire Roundtable: Predictions, opinions for No. 6 Oregon vs. California The Oregon Ducks are the got talk of the town in the world of college football right now, which means that we personally have a lot to talk about. Whether it’s Bo Nix Heisman Trophy odds, College Football Playoff rankings, or potential trips to the national championship game, there are endless storylines right now for Dan Lanning and the Ducks. Of course, none of those storylines will come to fruition if Oregon can’t take care of business this week against an improved California Golden Bears team that has one of the better offenses in the Pac-12. As we do each and every week, let’s preview the action with Ducks Wire writers Zachary Neel, Don Smalley, and Miles Dwyer. Here is your ninth regular-season Ducks Wire roundtable of the 2023 season. 22. No. 6 Oregon vs. California: Betting line moves over a point in favor of Ducks The back half of the season is set up to have a nice pace for the Oregon Ducks. After their bye week earlier in October, the Ducks had a top-19 matchup against the Washington Huskies, followed by a pretty winable game against the Washington State Cougars the next week. This past week saw a top-15 matchup against the Utah Utes, which resulted in a highly emotional victory, but it is being followed by a game at home against the California Golden Bears that should be relatively lopsided on paper. After that, you get games against USC and Oregon State separated by another outmatched opponent in the Arizona State Sun Devils. So while Oregon fans are still riding high after an incredible 35-6 win over the Utes this past weekend, the next few days will offer some opportunity to decompress and get back to home base. This weekend, Justin Wilcox and the Golden Bears come to Autzen, but it doesn’t appear that a close game is in the cards, based on the point spread as the week comes to a close. To open the week, Oregon was favored by 23.5 points, but that line has shifted in favor of the Ducks. Here are the latest lines and info that you need to know, courtesy of BetMGM... Oregon vs. California: Betting line moves a point in favor of Ducks DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM The betting line has shifted in favor of the Oregon Ducks in their home game against the California Golden Bears.
