In my opinion, a lot of NIL money will figure out that only one team per year wins the National Championship and they received nothing in return for their investment other than an NIL contract to pay a kid $$$$ that didn’t turn out to be the star they hoped. The money will level out at some point.

    My thought exactly.

It's going to take a few years for this to settle down.

Kids don't just want money now... they want to go to the NFL.

Sell the kids on great coaching that gives the skills they need to play in the NFL... AND a reasonable, very comfortable NIL.

  2. What happens when the "employer" of a "great QB" decides the QB isn't worth the $$$???

Example: say a wealthy booster decided to "hire" 5 star QB to come to Oregon with the promise of NIL millions. Mr. 5* shows up on campus and gets "hired" and starts making some serious money... But then, Mr. 5* doesn't beat out a grad transfer for the starting job. Say the coaches just give him very minimal playing time. How long does the wealthy booster continue to pay a great potential QB just to be in the room and be ready to come in if #1 QB gets hurt? Wealthy booster might think it is an investment for the future... next year Mr. 5* will be the starter. But what if the coaches bring in another QB through the portal... one with a couple years starting experience at a big name University from the SEC? What does wealthy booster think now?

What happens when the NIL opportunity to make a million bucks a year dries up after game 5??? Did anyone sign a one year contract? Maybe so since athletes can have agents.

  3. Hard to judge from only one game.

Did Michigan show that they belonged last night?  Hard to judge from only one game.

Right now Utah is making Tosu look somewhat pedestrian. Maybe all the champs deserve to be in it.

What is going to happen in the championship game????

    Hopefully, that Alabama didn't belong.

  4. I like it because it is unique... though it did take me a little while to realize it was trees.

Quite frankly, I don't think that we should be talking about any dissatisfaction with it as long as the guy who paid for it is still alive and wants to keep donating. If Phil likes it, I like it.

Another consideration: our athletes play on it all the time get used to it. The end line and the side lines are sometimes hard to see, which gives us an advantaged over visiting teams. The refs don't seem to have a problem knowing where the line is.

Final consideration is... what do the students think of it? We have had this same conversation about various uniform combinations, and to me, the bottom line is what do the athletes who play in them think??? If they start complaining, things will change.

  5. Almost an interesting read from an Auburn homer. What I found even more interesting were the comments after the article. Not one was favorable of the article. One was extremely unfavorable to the writer, calling him a "high schooler". Several pointed out how wrong he was saying that Oregon didn't put QB's into the NFL. JH got mentioned in all of those and several other NFL Duck QB's were also mentioned (but not all of them). All in all, the comment section was very pro Oregon without being at all anti Auburn.

They seemed like they were all fairly mature Auburn fans. One specifically was thinking and hoping that the move would be good for both Nix and Auburn.

AB deserves to start, and the offense has been built around his skills. He has also been a warrior within this system, we should be grateful.

Totally agree. He deserves to start as apposed to a kick in the butt. I hope to see at least a quarter of someone else at QB.

AB deserves this and our gratitude for giving two years of his life to Oregon and helping to elevate the program to at least a 10 win season.

I am in agreement with his continued improvement in recruiting, but for OSU to recruit as well as the best Oregon has ever done?  I am not buying that statement, and we will just cheerfully disagree on that one.

I did not say that OSU will recruit as well as the best Oregon has ever done. I said, "OSU recruiting will be at a the level that the Snake took Oregon to... which was the best ever that Oregon had."   When the Snake came to Oregon and had his first recruiting class all the chatter on FishDuck was that he proved that Oregon CAN be recruited too. When he left, MC took it to another level and has been improving every year.

What I said was that OSU recruiting will be (future tense-at some time in the future) at the level that the Snake took Oregon to... which was the best ever that Oregon had (past tense - at the time that the Snake was here). I did not say that OSU will ever recruit as well as Oregon is now.

I don't see any disagreement here as I did not say that OSU will at any time "recruit as well as the best Oregon has ever done."   So, let's not agree to "cheerfully disagree" on anything here. How about if we just cheerfully agree that the recruiting trajectory of Jonathan Smith looks very bright as you do in the first part of your sentence above before you misquoted me in the second half of the same sentence?
