  1. Not all fans agree with Josh Pate's perfect conferences.

When it comes to college sports, many fans say they've been put off by the massive amounts of college realignment in recent years.

Geographical affiliation and travel no longer seems to be a concern, as schools from California and Texas are set to join the ACC.

Former Pac-12 teams will head to the Big Ten, and the SEC is adding a team that is not in the South nor in the Eastern part of the United States.

One college football commentator has attempted to solve the problem by putting together a list of what he feels would be the "perfect" conferences.

CBS Sports' Josh Pate put together seven conferences and a list of independents, and college football fans are debating whether his choices were correct.

Oregon ranked among top Big Ten schools in 2024, per Athlon Sports

It’s ranking season in the world of college football, and while spring practices have either just begun or are getting set to begin in the next couple of weeks across the nation, publications are making a point to get their last “pre-spring” rankings out into the ether.

We’ve done the same here at Ducks Wire, giving you our projected Preseason Top 25, our way-too-early Big Ten Power Rankings, and our Big Ten schedule rankings, among other things. Now let’s take a look at how one of the most respected publications in college football history - Athlon Sports - sees things.

This past week, Athlon released their Big Ten Power Rankings ahead of the spring season. With four new additions from the West Coast, let’s take a look at how everyone slots in before spring ball gets off of the ground.

For the first time since November, 247Sports updated its Top247 for the Class of 2025.

Of Oregon's five commitments in the 2025 class, four made the Top247 cut, including four-star WRs Dallas Wilson and Adrian Wilson, quarterback Akili Smith Jr., and EDGE rusher Matthew Johnson. Only three-star OL Chavez Thompson did not make the list.

Currently, Oregon's 2025 class is No. 12 overall in the Composite Team scores, trailing Tennessee and landing just ahead of Texas Tech. In the Top247 team rankings, Oregon is No. 15 overall, trailing Iowa but ahead of Texas.

In this article, DuckTerritory.com breaks down the movement from all five Oregon commits in the most recent Top247 update.

Find out why the lovable Oregon Ducks' mascot is who he is and why he dons green & yellow every Saturday in the fall.

Oregon's state flower is the wild grape which blooms beautiful yellow flowers every spring. In 1893, UO students voted to adopt the flower's yellow as their school color.

Believe it or not, with how often the team wears the color, green was never officially voted in as one of Oregon's school colors. However, it has been used so frequently alongside the yellow that it has nearly become the primary color for the Ducks.

As sportswriters proliferated the name it became codified in both local and national consciousness as synonymous with Oregon’s teams. This de facto status as the University of Oregon’s mascot led athletic director Leo Harris to seek out an official representation of a duck for the school.

That desire led to the handshake deal in 1947 between Harris and Walt Disney which linked UO to Donald Duck. The informal arrangement allowed Oregon to use Donald’s likeness for its mascot for free as long as it was used in a reputable manner. The cartoon mogul’s studio produced several versions of Donald for the school over the next two decades, until Disney’s death in 1966 led his estate and the school to realize the lack of any formal contract. Over the next seven years, the two parties worked to create a written agreement outlining the terms of Donald’s continued use as Oregon’s official duck representative.

Donald would slowly evolve into the webfooted mascot that currently patrols Autzen Stadium, Hayward Field, and Matthew Knight Arena. After the agreement with Disney, early attempts were made to create a Donald costume to serve as the team’s mascot at games and university events.

Earlier this week, The Athletic came out with their annual head coaching rankings for college football, ordering who they believe are the best 25 guys in the nation going into the new season. The rankings were released by well-respected journalists Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman.

Surely, Dan Lanning, the rising coaching star who was considered one of the top names to take over for Nick Saban at Alabama this past year, would be ranked prominently, right? He’s 22-5 in his two years leading the Oregon Ducks, with a pair of top-10 recruiting classes and a handful of dominant wins in his short career as a head coach.

Report: Ducks add Matt Lombardi as analyst to football program

According to Matt Zenitz of 247sports.com, the Oregon Ducks football program is expected to hire Matt Lombardi as an analyst.

Ever since Dan Lanning arrived in Eugene, he has transformed the football staff to look more and more like a professional organization and the hiring of Lombardi is another step in that direction.

The newest member of the Duck football staff is coming most recently from the Las Vegas Raiders and he has experience with the Carolina Panthers. With the Raiders, Lombardi was an offensive assistant and an assistant receivers coach.

A bonus is that he worked with current offensive coordinator Will Stein when the two were at Louisville.

New Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly opened up why he left UCLA for the Buckeyes OC job.

In an unprecedented move during the modern era of transfer portal and NIL, Kelly left his head coaching post with the Bruins to take an assistant job in the same conference: the Big Ten.

However, Kelly prioritized his happiness and love of the job as reason why he left UCLA for Ohio State.

“Sometimes I do a lot of things other people don’t do,” Kelly said. “I don’t know if that’s right or wrong, but I think it started when we were preparing for a bowl game. Ryan Gunderson is a great quarterbacks coach, left to go to Oregon State as the coordinator. So he wasn’t there. So I actually coached quarterbacks during the bowl game and I just started to think like I hadn’t actually coached a position since 2008.

“And I think my wife, she’s like, I haven’t seen you this happy in a long time. And to me, the best part of football is football. And so you got to do football, and not do some of the things that involve being the head coach.”

Kelly simply just wanted to coach football and thought more about it as UCLA transitioned into the offseason.

Four-Star RB Jordon Davison sets pair of unofficial trips for later this month

Davison has a good idea where he will take his official trips and is set for a summer commitment.

Davison said he’s planning to take a couple more visits in April and then will set up his official trips in May.

“I don’t have any official visit dates set yet but I have a good idea where my visits will be,” Davidson said. “I know I’ll visit Ohio State, Texas, Oregon and Bama. After that, I don’t know but I have time to figure it out.

“I was just at Oregon and had a great trip. They have a lot to offer as a program and I’m really comfortable with the coaching staff. I also think I can go in there and make an immediate impact and that’s important to me.”

Texas has been on Davidson’s short list since first offering him as a sophomore.

“I think I’ve been to Texas about six times so far,” Davidson said. “It’s a great school with great tradition and they’re going in the right direction right now. I love the coaches and have a great relationship with Sark and Tashard Choice.

“Right now, I really don’t have a leader, I like all of those schools pretty equally. It’s going to be a tough decision for sure because I kind of go back and forth in my head but I think after my visits, I’ll know what I’m doing and I’m planning to commit in the summer before my senior year is here.”

Oregon head coach Dana Altman discusses the rumors of a potential retirement.

Dana Altman will complete his 14th regular season as head coach of the Oregon men's basketball program this weekend, and despite some rumors and whispers he could be close to retiring, Altman is committed to coaching at Oregon for the extended future.

    "I don't know who said it, I know I didn't," said Altman.

ESPN.com reported last week that the 65-year-old Altman was rumored to be considering retirement. CBSSports on Tuesday reported as well that Altman could be considering it.

That's news to Altman as he remains steadfast in leading the program he's built up at Oregon.

"I haven't talked to anyone, so whoever is saying that, it's pure speculation," said Altman. "I'm not going anywhere, unless this school tells me to. I'm not retiring, that's for sure."

Oregon could potentially have a young and exciting program heading into the 2024-25 season. Freshman point guard Jackson Shelstad is poised to be a Pac-12 All-Freshman this season, while fellow freshman forward Kwame Evans could also play his way into that all-conference team as well. Juniors Nate Bittle, Jadrian Tracey, and Ben Rigsby all have years of eligibility and have been starters throughout different parts of their careers. Seniors Kario Oquendo and Keeshawn Barthelemy could also return for their extra COVID year if they choose to do so.

Oregon to hire Missouri State's Donte Ellington as analyst

The Oregon Ducks are making an addition to their coaching staff, hiring former Missouri State coach Donte Ellington.

Ellington worked as a wide receiver coach and special teams coordinator for Missouri State, and per 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, he will come to Eugene as an analyst.

In 2023, three of Ellington’s wide receivers at Missouri State gathered over 500 receiving yards, all averaging 40+ yards per game and 10+ yards per catch. The Bears’ most productive receiver, Raylen Sharpe, had 991 receiving yards and 7 TDs in 10 games played last season.
