  2. Our way-too-early 2024 Oregon Defensive Two-Deep
  3. Stewart Mandel’s too-early college football Top 25 revised: Upheaval creates 2024 rankings shake-up Never in all my years writing way-too-early Top 25s was there ever so much January upheaval. Three of the four College Football Playoff teams — Alabama (Nick Saban), Washington (Kalen DeBoer) and Michigan (Jim Harbaugh) — lost their coaches, the first two unleashing an onslaught of transfers that benefited fellow contenders like Ohio State and Texas. Version 2.0 consists of an obvious top four, followed by a whole bunch of teams people will invariably say are overrated. And poor Washington fell out altogether I'm only showing his top 10 in case someone can't read the article. It seems when he revised his top 25 he moved Ohio St. and Texas ahead of Oregon. 1. Georgia (Previous: 1) No notable changes to report in Athens, besides Kirby Smart plucking new co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson from Alabama. The Dawgs, 42-2 over the past three seasons, return a wealth of experience on defense, led by LB Smael Mondon Jr. and S Malaki Starks. Florida transfer Trevor Etienne should be the new go-to running back, and QB Carson Beck gets new targets in Miami WR Colbie Young and Vanderbilt WR London Humphreys. 2. Ohio State (Previous: 4) Since Michigan’s national title, Ohio State has been on an apparent NIL spending spree. Nearly every major Buckeyes underclass draft prospect — RB TreVeyon Henderson, WR Emeka Egbuka, CB Denzel Burke and DEs JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer — announced their returns. Meanwhile, Ryan Day has added Kansas State QB Will Howard, Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins, Alabama OL Seth McLaughlin and, most stunningly, Alabama S Caleb Downs, named first-team All-SEC as a freshman. 3. Texas (Previous: 5) After QB Quinn Ewers opted to stay, Steve Sarkisian added Oregon State WR Silas Bolden and both Alabama WR Isaiah Bond and TE Amari Niblack to fill the void left by Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell and Ja’Tavion Sanders. He’d previously landed Houston WR Matthew Golden. Texas will be experienced up front on offense and throughout its defense, which added stud UTSA pass rusher Trey Moore (14 sacks last season) and Clemson S Andrew Mukuba (31 starts). 4. Oregon (Previous: 3) Dan Lanning made several big portal adds in December, most notably Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel, and has since landed coveted Texas A&M WR Evan Stewart, Duke DB Brandon Johnson and Washington CB Jabbar Muhammad. Stewart joins WRs Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden and TE Terrance Ferguson, to go with returning RB Jordan James and Division II All-America RB Jay Harris. Houston DL Jamaree Caldwell (second-team All-Big 12) joins DE Jordan Burch and LB Jeffrey Bassa. 5. Ole Miss (Previous: eighth) The Rebels were already returning QB Jaxson Dart, WRs Tre Harris and Jordan Watkins and TE Caden Prieskorn. Then Lane Kiffin spent December raking in established SEC defensive transfers like Texas A&M DE Walter Nolen. After star RB Judkins defected, he picked up LSU’s (formerly Notre Dame’s) Logan Diggs. And then he recently landed LG Nate Kalepo and RG Julius Buelow from Washington’s Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line, moving Ole Miss to No. 1 in 247Sports’ portal rankings. 6. Michigan (Previous: 6) A drop-off is likely unavoidable in Sherrone Moore’s first season with all the talent Michigan has lost, notably QB J.J. McCarthy, RB Blake Corum and nearly the entire O-line. But RB Donovan Edwards put off the NFL, TE Colston Loveland returns and young WRs Semaj Morgan and Tyler Morriswill have bigger roles. DTs Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, pass rushers Josaiah Stewart and Derrick Moore, CB Will Johnson and S Rod Moore should anchor another strong defense, but QB is a big question mark. 7. Notre Dame (Previous: 9) Marcus Freeman boosted his offense by hiring away LSU OC Mike Denbrock and landing Duke QB Riley Leonard and adding three quality receivers, including Florida International’s Kris Mitchell (1,118 yards). He also brought in Northwestern CB Rod Heard II (85 tackles last season) to team with standout CB Benjamin Morrison, All-America S Xavier Watts and Arizona State S Jordan Clark. DTs Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills return up front. 8. Alabama (Previous: 2) It’s hard to say where the first post-Saban Alabama team should be ranked, especially after losing key players like Downs, Bond, T Kadyn Proctor (Iowa) and RB Roydell Williams (Florida State). But the Tide still bring back QB Jalen Milroe, RB Justice Haynes, LBs Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbelland DB Malachi Moore, with a whole bunch of blue-chippers in the next wave. They can still be a CFP contender. 9. Utah (Previous: 11) Amid all the turmoil and inexperience elsewhere, the Utes stand out with their two-decade head coach (Kyle Whittingham), seventh-year QB (Cam Rising) and tight end (Brant Kuithe), plus veterans like RB Micah Bernard, LBs Levani Damuni and Karene Reid and CB Zemaiah Vaughn. Meanwhile, Utah has added former Arizona/USC WR Dorian Singer, UCLA TE Carsen Ryan and veteran Stanford S Alaka’i Gilman. 10. Oklahoma State (Previous: 12) Doak Walker Award-winning RB Ollie Gordon II will carry the load for the Cowboys once again, but Mike Gundy also added Arkansas’ AJ Green as a potential complement. QB Alan Bowman and WRs Brennan Presley and Rashod Owens all return, and Ohio transfer Tyler Foster fills a need at tight end. But bumping Oklahoma State into the top 10 comes with an acknowledgement that its defense will need to be more consistent. Poor Washington fell out altogether.

  5. Oregon Picks up Two Big Predictions to Land 5-Star WR Gatlin Bair National experts continue to echo that Oregon may very well be the team to beat for the top uncommitted player in the country. The February National Signing Day is a little over a week away and the Ducks appear to be gaining steam with the top uncommitted recruit in the 2024 class. Burley (ID) wide receiver Gatlin Bair has narrowed his recruitment to Oregon and Michigan ahead of announcing his decision on February 7. On Monday two of the heavy hitters in the recruiting industry, Brandon Huffman and Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, logged their predictions for Bair to commit to Oregon. https://www.si.com/college/oregon/recruiting/oregon-picks-up-two-big-predictions-to-land-5-star-wr-gatlin-bair
  6. A quartet of top three finishes, six to 10s, and one monster throw among Oregon performances On the final day of the Razorback Invitational, the Oregon track and field team achieved four top-three finishes and six in the top 10. Jaida Ross was the star of the day as she secured a victory in the shot put with an NCAA-leading and world No. 2 mark of 18.84m/61-9.75 on her final attempt. This surpassed her previous lifetime best and earned her the No. 8 spot on the all-time collegiate indoor list, breaking the Razorback Invitational meet record. 7. The Oregon Ducks’ excellence in the transfer portal has continued into the end of January, with Dan Lanning and the Ducks most recently adding Jabbar Muhammad, a former Washington cornerback. After Muhammad’s transfer, Oregon climbed near the top of the 247 Sports’ transfer portal rankings. Also, after the addition of Muhammad, Oregon retained its spot at No. 5 in the overall rankings of the 2024 recruiting class. Muhammad is a blue-chip transfer, but he certainly isn’t the only big portal pickup Lanning has made this offseason. Early in December, the Ducks received commitments from star quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore, and they’ve also added elite players such as Evan Stewart and Jamaree Caldwell. Since classes have begun at most universities, movement in the transfer portal is winding down, so these rankings won’t change much until the portal reopens in the spring. Below, I’ve listed what are likely the final transfer portal rankings of the winter transfer window. Oregon Football: Ducks climb transfer rankings after lateest addition DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Where Oregon stands in transfer portal rankings after latest addition of CB Jabbar Muhammad.
  8. More than two years since plans for Oregon’s new indoor football practice facility were announced, there is finally a formal timeline for its construction. The city of Eugene and University of Oregon negotiated for nearly a year and a half over a land swap that will facilitate UO rerouting Leo Harris Parkway in order to accommodate the new indoor football practice facility. That agreement was signed on Dec. 21, according to documents received by The Oregonian/OregonLive in response to a public records request. The land swap calls for the university to trade 8.15 acres south of the Willamette River to the city for 5.55 acres of land across from the UO athletics complex, improvements to neighboring Alton Baker Park and parking areas along Leo Harris Parkway. The university will receive Privately Engineered Public Improvement (PEPI) permits from the city for various aspects of construction and rerouting of Leo Harris Parkway in the interim and once that work is complete, then the deeds will be exchanged at closing, which is to be no later than Sept. 30, 2025, according to the agreement. While there is no start date listed for the construction of the new indoor facility, the agreement states construction of all university facilities is to be completed by Dec. 31, 2029. “The project is progressing as we had hoped,” a UO athletics spokesperson said. 15. A new era is coming for the Oregon Ducks — and the whole world of college football, really — in 2024, thanks to conference realignment and the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. With the death of the Pac-12 and the move to the Big Ten, Dan Lanning is now shepherding the Ducks into the new dawn, and based on the roster construction we’ve seen so far this offseason, he’s got the team well prepared. “I think the challenge in front of us is a lot of fun,” Lanning said. “I don’t think anyone gets into this profession and says ‘Give me the easy road.’ So being in a conference that has that competitive nature; that has really good football; that plays a physical brand of football, that’s something that I’m excited about.” Oregon Football: Dan Lanning details how Ducks will adjust to Big Ten DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning how his team will adjust to the Big Ten, and vice versa, going into the 2024 college football season. 20. Recruiting Party: Ducks' visitor list highlighted by 5-star safety, 2025 QB commit The Oregon Ducks have been getting after it on the recruiting trail this past week, with their coaches flying all across the country and getting some face time with highly-rated prospects that they are after in the class of 2025. That will change this weekend, though, as some of those prospects take a trip to Eugene to check out the Oregon campus and visit the Ducks for their Junior Day this weekend. The list of visitors expected in Eugene is headlined by 5-star safety Faheem Delane, the No. 1 safety in the 2025 class. 21. Ducks pick up prediction to land No. 4 TE in 2025 class The Oregon Ducks coaching staff has been out on the recruiting trail over the past couple of weeks making stops to see highly-rated prospects across the country. While that was happening, though, they got a prediction to land one of the top players at his position in the 2025 class. On Wednesday, On3’s Chad Simmons logged a projection for 4-star tight end DaSaahn Brame to end up with the Ducks. Brame is rated by 247Sports as the No. 95 player in the 2025 class, and the No. 4 tight end available. Standing at 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, Brame is a massive body at the TE position, and he would offer elite upside as a pass-catcher.
