Instant Reactions: Oregon breaks school scoring record in 81-7 win vs. Portland State

It’s good to be back.

While students aren’t back in school at UO yet, the stadium was plenty full today. Everyone loved “Shout” as always. And it was all capped off by an Oregon win. We knew this would be a blowout, but I didn't expect a blowout this large. In my predictions, I had a final score of 59-13.

Needless to say, the Ducks exceeded expectations.

The season will be long, and this definitely isn’t an outcome anyone should get accustomed to, but it is a fun and exciting way to kick off the 2023 season. Below are some more specific reactions from right after the game.

Instant Takeaways from Oregon's blowout win over Portland State

The No. 15 ranked Oregon Ducks opened up their 2023 football season under second-year head coach Dan Lanning with a bang as they totaled over 600 yards of total offense, racked up over 80 points, and held the Vikings to fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

In the end, the Ducks walked out of Autzzen Stadium with an impressive and dominating 81-7 victory to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Bo Nix looked elite as he threw for multiple touchdowns, Troy Franklin caught two touchdowns of his own, and star running back Bucky Irving was electric in his limited touches.

With the Oregon victory now secured the Oregon Ducks walked off with a big win and moved to next week's Top 25 showdown at Texas Tech.

Ahead of that game though, here are the instant takeaways we have from the blowout win.

3 takeaways from a dominant Oregon win to open 2023 season

Oregon opened its 2023 season on Saturday with the best kind of performance a team can have in a buy game — convincing.

The Ducks dominated the Portland State Vikings for just about the entire afternoon and walked away with an 81-7 victory. The 81 points scored set a record for the most in a single, modern-era game in school history.

Oh, my aching back! Not yours, thank goodness Charles but how about poor Puddles? 81 push-ups? Shame on you Stripes Bill Murray.

This game was close right up to the last note of our National Anthem.

But this is how you are supposed to win pay-for-a-win games. Right Stony Brook and Mari(O?)

I hope you didn't have to buy 81 hotdogs, Charles. And I hope Mr. Marsh did not have to consume the same. This would put Joey Chitwood's champion 74 hot dogs swallowed into the kennel and perhaps. would have taken Mr. FishDuck's credit cards to the limit?

There were upwards of 10 players who could have a case for player of the game in Oregon’s blowout win against Portland State, but today the award goes to Gary Bryant Jr.

In his first game as a Duck, Bryant had 7 receptions for 100 yards and 2 TDs. He was also only targeted 7 times meaning he hauled the ball in each time it was thrown his way.

True freshman tracker: Twenty-three frosh play in Oregon's season opener

Winning a football game by 74 points provides a team a lot of benefits.

Chief among them is the ability to empty benches and play the majority of the team's personnel. Saturday's 81-7 win over Portland State allowed the Ducks to play 81 total players, including 23 scholarship true freshmen.

For the nearly two-dozen frosh who played, Saturday acted as their first collegiate action and moves them one step closer to the threshold to avoid redshirting.

"What I did see today, and what I did see in the fall, is a group that wants to compete, and they understood that if they step on the field, they’re viewed no different than a starter,” head coach Dan Lanning said of the freshmen.

“There’s a standard of excellence that we expect, and I think a lot of guys tried to perform to that level. The only way you’re gonna get better football is playing.

"Some of those guys got out there, getting that early experience, those are gonna be guys we’re relying on later on the season.

Some of those guys will be relying on every single game so it’s good for them to get some early opportunities out there in the field. We’ll see what they do with it going forward.”

Check out who the freshmen were that played today...

Ducks true freshmen contribute immediately to historic victory

Oregon's 2023 season began with a bang on Saturday afternoon, as they set a new single-game record for points (81) and margin of victory (74) in their week one win over Portland State.

As many predicted, the game was out of reach early, and the Ducks did not hesitate to put in true first-year students, holding on to their redshirt status in game one.

The Ducks 2023 class ranked in the top 10, bringing 30 recruits to campus, including 19 four-star recruits and one five-star recruit.

On Saturday, the Ducks played 24 members of that 2023 class, many of whom recorded stats and played most of the game.

For any Oregon Ducks fan who needed a scoring fix after a long offseason, they ought to be satisfied after Saturday afternoon’s performance from Dan Lanning and Co.

In his first game as the Ducks’ offensive coordinator, Will Stein hung an 80-piece on the Portland State Vikings, breaking the school record for most points scored in a single game with 81.

The offensive line was tremendous, the skill-position players were electric, and the defense was dominant after a couple of early miscues that let the Vikings on the board in the first quarter.

Behind it all was a raucous Autzen Stadium that was just happy to see football being played in Eugene once again. The fans showed out, as expected, and it made for a great environment.

Here are some of the best pictures from that environment on Saturday...

Oregon's offense makes history plus other notes from the 81-7 win

The victory Saturday afternoon over the Portland State Vikings presented more than a handful of interesting team and individual notes to pass along, including some history being made by the Oregon football program.

Oregon's 81 points scored against the Vikings were the most in the modern era of Oregon Duck Football. The 74-point winning margin is also the most in the modern era, and it's the largest margin since a 97-point win over Willamette in 1916.

Oregon's 50-point performance in the first half is tied for the fourth-most in any half by Oregon since 1996 and the most since scoring 52 in the first half against Oregon State in 2017.

The 81-7 victory secured Oregon's 19th straight home opening win, and the Ducks are now 91-33-4 all-time in season openers, and 68-9-2 all-time at home in season openers.

Oregon has moved to 6-0 all-time against the Portland State Vikings, outscoring the Vikings 370-47 in those six contests.

Be sure to read all the notes. I found the info to be very interesting...

Column: Oregon's offense is elite, but Ducks' championship dreams hinge on defensive excellence

The Oregon Ducks broke the program record for scoring on Saturday afternoon against the Portland State Vikings, putting up 50 points in the first half of an eventual 81-7 win.

They tallied 729 yards of total offense, converted 38 first downs, saw eight different players score a TD, and watched just five passes fall incomplete between three different quarterbacks.

Is anyone surprised?

Personally, I wouldn’t say so. With QB Bo Nix returning for one final year, we knew that the ceiling would be high for this offense, despite the fact that OC Kenny Dillingham was being replaced by Will Stein.

When you put returning weapons like Bucky Irving, Troy Franklin, and Terrance Ferguson around Nix, and throw in transfers Tez Johnson Traeshon Holden, and Gary Bryant, then you’ve got the makings of a deep and talented unit that could easily compete on a championship stage.

The offense was never the question coming into this season — we always knew that the Ducks would be able to put up points at will.

Whether or not the defense could keep points off of the board, though, is what Oregon’s championship dreams hinged on.

Snap Count Takeaways: Biggest notes from Oregon's usage report in season-opener

A lot of questions were answered in the Oregon Ducks season-opening win against the Portland State Vikings on Saturday, but one of the most valuable bits of information we get after Week 1 comes after the game.

I am always excited to look at the usage report following the first contest of the year to get a sense of the snap counts that each player tallied during the matchup.

With new faces across the roster, and a load of players getting onto the field, it finally gives us a great opportunity to look at who plays, what the depth chart might look like, and which guys are getting the biggest opportunities.

We know the guys who started and played the most on Saturday in the 81-7 win over Portland State, but now we get to see how much some of the young guys played as well.

Here are the snap counts for Week 1, and some major takeaways from the numbers...

Stock Report: Ducks see nothing but risers in 81-7 win over Portland State

With an opening game against an FCS school where you put up a program-record 81 points and win by a margin of 74, it feels wrong to say that anyone saw their stock drop on the day.

For the Oregon Ducks, there was a long list of players — mostly young players — who got onto the field Saturday afternoon in the 81-7 win against the Portland State Vikings who showed what they could do after a long and hard offseason. We want to highlight them.

Throughout the season, we will bring this Stock Report to you every week after Saturday’s game, singling out the players who performed the best and saw their stock rise the most, and also identifying a few players who may have had a tough day.

As you would expect in the season-opener, there weren’t any players who saw their stock fall in Oregon’s dominant win over the Vikings.

Here are the guys whose stock rose the most in my mind...

Gary Bryant Jr. makes strong first impression with 100 yard performance in debut

Few questioned who would be Bo Nix's favorite target in 2023. Troy Franklin emerged as the unquestioned top choice a season ago.

What was less clear entering Saturday's season opener was the hierarchy and chemistry between Nix and the rest of the receivers.

For at least one day, Gary Bryant Jr. emerged as the clear No. 2. The USC transfer started the game opposite of Franklin at outside receiver and nearly matched the star junior's production with a seven-catch, 100-yard and two-touchdown performance.

"It feels great to go out and compete with this team and see where we're at as a team," Bryant said shortly after Oregon blasted Portland State 81-7. "It's week one. It'll be an uphill battle from here, but it feels great to go out there and get back on the field."

After a breakout season in 2021, the sophomore played sparingly for the Trojans last fall, utilizing a redshirt season before entering the portal. Despite falling out of favor in LA, Bryant never lost faith in his own abilities, he says.

Ty Thompson took advantage of the opportunity given against Portland State

With Bo Nix returning for a second and final season for the Ducks in 2023, Oregon's starting QB role was filled and instantly viewed as one of the best in the country. But what did Oregon have behind him?

Sophomore Ty Thompson entered his third year with the program with little production to show. Over the course of the season, the Ducks need to figure out what Ty Thompson can do and where his improvements are to further help in the decision at QB for next year.

Saturday against Portland State the Ducks were able to get Thompson into the game with Oregon's first-string offense and the 6-foot-4 strong-armed QB looked perhaps as good as he's ever looked in a Duck uniform.

“I think that’s a sign of what Ty’s capable of, right? Because Ty performed exactly how we expected him to perform today," said Oregon head coach Dan Lanning.

Two-sport athlete Bryce Boettcher excels in first career start

Bryce Boettcher narrowly missed announcing himself to the Autzen faithful on the first kickoff of the 2023 season. Boettcher just missed a big hit to open the season but, instead, surprised the stadium by starting at linebacker with Jeffrey Bassa lining up next to him.

Boettcher, a two-sport standout playing baseball under head coach Mark Wasikowski, transitioned from safety to linebacker just this fall.

Last season, Boettcher forfeited his baseball scholarship to live out his dreams of playing for the football program. During the 2022 season, Boettcher only played special teams, charging down the field and looking to make a tackle.

In year two, special teams again brought him his biggest college football moment yet. Following another Oregon touchdown, Camden Lewis booted one on the following kickoff, returnable for Portland State's Christian Grubb.

Grubb, taking his eyes off the ball for a split second, coughed up the pill as Boettcher flew in from the left side, dove, and secured the fumble, putting the Ducks in prime position at the 13-yard line.

"I saw it on the ground and my original reaction was to try and scoop and score it," said Boettcher after the game. "And then the back of my mind I realized I was probably running a little bit too fast, so I was just going to jump on it. Give it back to the offense and let them take care of the rest."

Two-sport standout Bryce Boettcher made his first start on the gridiron on Saturday, recording four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Ducks Set Scoring Record In Opening Win

On a nearly flawless day at Autzen Stadium, even a brief afternoon rain shower waited to begin falling until after the Oregon football team had left the field with a season-opening win.

It was that kind of day for the Ducks, who opened their 2023 season with an 81-7 victory Saturday before 45,723 fans in Autzen Stadium.

The UO offense set a modern program record for points scored, the defense bounced back from an early scoring drive to lock down the Vikings, and nearly the entire 2023 recruiting class made their collegiate debuts for the Ducks.

No doubt, film review by the coaching staff will reveal some flaws. But from the stands in the stadium, it was just about a perfect afternoon.
