An Oregon Ducks Fan Guide to the Big Ten Conference

Recommended Posts

All about the Illinois Fighting Illini:

Twin cities tucked in the center of the state, where stories of football greats, film critics, and science fiction villains began. A football and basketball program seeking to keep up with their regional rivals. One of the largest student bodies in the U.S. flocking in from around the world.

The University of Illinois is one of the original seven members of the Big Ten Conference, with an athletic history dating back to the 19th century. While many of its competitors in the conference steadily stacked up trophies over a century-plus, Illinois hasn’t won a team national championship in a major sport since 1951.

As the Oregon Ducks prepare for a move to the Big Ten in 2024, The Oregonian/OregonLive is taking a look at all of their newest conference rivals. While Ducks fans might be deeply familiar with fellow Pac-12 departees Washington, USC and UCLA, they have 14 new teams to get to know this year.

We begin with the Illinois Fighting Illini.

All about the Indiana Hoosiers:

Long, candy-striped pants. A chair spinning wildly across hardwood. An ever-growing network of American soccer influence. The resurrection of a forgotten football program.

Located in the heart of the midwest, Indiana University is among the three oldest institutions in the Big Ten Conference. Its sports tradition and history runs deep, from legendary men’s basketball coach Bob Knight to — oddly enough — two key figures in the recent history of the Portland Timbers.

We see Illinois in Autzen in 2024 but do not play the Hoosiers in 2024.

Bob Knight. Coached Mike Krzyzewski at West Point. Played on a great Ohio State team, with Jerry Lucas, Larry Siegfried, and John Havlicek. Ohio State won the NCAA title in 1960, defeating Cal in front of a lot of Golden Bears fans in the Cow Palace in Daly City, CA., by 20 points. tOSU played for the title in 1961 and 1962 but lost to in-state rival Cincinnati on both occasions.

It's going to be B1G fun!

All about the Iowa Hawkeyes:

Cornfields and pig farms cover much of the landscape of perhaps the most quintessentially “Midwest” midwestern state: Iowa. Across more than a century of sports history, football players and wrestlers have emerged from those fields with regularity.

Basketball players, too. Ask reigning national player of the year and soon-to-be leading scorer in NCAA history Caitlin Clark. But what is there to know about Iowa beyond Clark’s unstoppable jumper, the sweetest corn you’ve ever tasted, and their first-in-the-nation caucuses come presidential election season?

From hulking wrestlers to NFL tight ends, and now the most dominant player in women's basketball, Iowa sports have always been in the Big Ten mix.

The 3 "profiles" so far have been really skimpy on details - really skimpy.

Most have had an era of football success, or basketball success, and some schools more than one era.  Likewise notable/star players.  What/when/how long ago?

A bit about the city in which each is located would be nice too.

The reigning College Football Playoff national champions hail from a school with one of the most decorated sports histories in the country.

With a massive endowment, extensive athletic investment and the biggest sports venue in the United States, the Wolverines are among the crown jewels of the Big Ten Conference.

CBS Sports NFL guru Josh Edwards has the New B1G closing in on the New SEC, at least in the 1st Round of his latest draft predictions.

Edwards has SC QB Caleb Williams No. 1 to the Bears, UCLA Edge Latu No. 9 to the Bears, UW WR Odunze No. 14 to the Saints, UW OL Fautano No. 21 to the Dolphins, and OBD Rimington Award winner Jackson Powers-Johnson OL, No. 26 to the Bucs.

With the 5 B1G Newbies being drafted, the New B1G is projected to have 11 1st-round picks.

The New SEC with 1 player from Oklahoma and 1 player from Texas projected to be drafted in the 1st round, comes in with 12 predicted 1st round picks. Edwards predicts 4 Bama, 3 LSU, and 2 players from Georgia will go in the first round.

LSU QB Daniels is projected as going No. 3 to the Pats. But with LSU WRs going No. 5 and No. 17 in the first round, is Daniels being overvalued? That was one heck of an O LSU put on the field in 2023 and the Heisman winner had a great year but how much was due to him and how much to the supporting cast?

At the end of the day, the SEC will again have the most players drafted.

All about the Michigan State Spartans:

The Red Cedar River winds through the picturesque Michigan State University campus, surrounded by trees and nearly 170 years of history dating back to the school’s founding as an agricultural college.

If Bill Walton decides to keep following the Oregon Ducks around the country once they leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference, East Lansing is certainly no “truck stop.” Its sports history — at times groundbreaking — shouldn’t be overlooked, either. Former Oregon State Beavers coach Jonathan Smith will try to build on itstarting this fall.

All about the Nebraska Cornhuskers:

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are one of the Big Ten Conference’s newer members, but their football tradition long predates their change in conference affiliation. A one-time powerhouse on the gridiron is still searching for consistent success this century, but Nebraska’s volleyball team has more than taken up the mantle — and packed the football stadium, too.

All about the Northwestern Wildcats

Comedians, actors and journalists of renown have all made their way through the Northwestern University campus, located just north of the bustling metropolis of Chicago. The only private university in the Big Ten before USC joins up later this year, NU is one of the conference’s founding members.

While the Wildcats are still picking up the pieces in a football program plagued by scandal, and outside of lacrosse don’t boast many team national titles, the school’s investment in sports is arriving at a new peak. And you’re bound to hear about many of the developments, given the number of sports writers and broadcasters who hail from the school.

All about the Ohio State Buckeyes:

Few schools in the country boast a richer football tradition than Ohio State, a powerhouse by every metric in the sport and a constant national contender. Defined by their own success on the field and an historic rivalry with fellow perennial contender Michigan, the Buckeyes are a globally recognized sports brand.

A winning tradition extends to other sports, too, but fans of the Oregon Ducks certainly have that Oct. 12 football game at Autzen Stadium circled on their calendars several times over. Especially now that former Oregon coach Chip Kelly will be Ohio State’s offensive coordinator.

All about Penn State:

A football program with a storied history but marred by scandal, a women’s soccer program that has produced several Portland Thorns players, and a college town that serves as an example of the magic of college sports.

The Penn State Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten Conference in 1990 and boast one of the most iconic environments in college football. And with a massive athletic budget, the school has a long list of national championships in several other sports.

All about the Purdue Boilermakers:

One small step for man, one giant leap for... Zach Edey?

Purdue University: home of famed astronauts, popcorn magnates and outrageously tall basketball players. Its former president, James H. Smart, put forth the initiative that led to the Big Ten Conference’s founding in 1896. So, even with just three team national titles to their credit across all sports, there would be no Big Ten without the Boilermakers.

All about the Rutgers Scarlet Knights:

The oldest university in the Big Ten Conference also has the longest history on the football field: Rutgers.

The first-ever college football game was played at Rutgers, but as the game has evolved, the Scarlet Knights simply haven’t had consistent success on a national scale. Coach Greg Schiano is trying to change that and has seemingly changed the culture in New Brunswick, but it’s been an uphill climb since the school joined the Big Ten in 2014. The Scarlet Knights athletic program has spent big in the last five years in order to compete, and still faces a major budget shortfall as a result.

This in-depth look at how FSU could raise the money to buy its way out of the ACC references B1G, Oregon, and UW. In particular, as to the NW schools, Oregon's, and UW's right under the B1G agreement for each school to borrow $10M from the conference against future earnings. A 'tide me over' line of credit before the two NW schools become full partners in 2031/32.

The author, who is wired into FSU believes, based on this article, that FSU is more likely to head to the B1G than to the SEC. FSU is doing everything it can to become an AAU member. Both US World News and Forbes rank FSU academics well above private school Miami's ranking. And, FSU plays football on campus.

Like Notre Dame, FSU is a school that would be accretive to the B1G's bottom line upon joining the conference and Fox would likely love to plant the flag in SEC country. ESPN with its broadcast deal with the ACC is conflicted if that matters to ESPN, from bidding against itself to bring FSU into the SEC and risking litigation from the ACC if it attempted to do so.

FSU is doing all it can to extricate itself from the ACC's crummy media deal with ESPN.

This is not directly a B1G issue today. But like the change to the 2024/25 Playoff format, the format going forward, and the new Playoff media deal if a future post-2025 Playoff format can be agreed to, future conference expansion chess moves will affect Oregon athletics. Adding say Notre Dame and FSU would not help with travel but would help the B1G's bottom line in the ongoing battle for college sports conference hegemony.

All about the Maryland Terrapins:

Just outside the nation’s capital lies one of the Big Ten Conference’s newer members, one with a long history in the Atlantic Coast Conference: University of Maryland.

Amid snowdrifts in two bustling, interconnected cities, the musical stylings of Prince and Bob Dylan echo through the decades. And frigid weather is paired with longstanding food, drink and sporting traditions.

The University of Minnesota’s main campus, located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, was once the home of vice presidents, wrestlers, musicians and basketball stars. Above freshly plowed fields and frozen rinks, 29 NCAA-recognized championship banners hang proudly.

All about the Wisconsin Badgers:

I had a Wisconsin pun planned for this story, but it was too cheesy.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has been home to football legends, prized dairy cows, slapstick comedians, and pioneers of research and design. All about the Oregon Ducks:

The Oregon Ducks bring plenty to the table as they transition to the Big Ten Conference: one of the winningest football programs of the past two decades, a raucous atmosphere at Autzen Stadium, strong foundations in several other sports, institutional backing from Nike and its co-founder Phil Knight, and a nationally recognized brand that has steadily become a household name.

Dan Lanning and company have the No. 1 recruiting class for 2024 among Big Ten schools. Dana Altman and Kelly Graves have both taken teams to the Final Four. And the clacking cleats of iconic track stars — from Steve Prefontaine to Ashton Eaton — echo through decades of history at Hayward Field.

As the Ducks prepare for a move to the Big Ten in 2024, The Oregonian/OregonLive took an in-depth look at all of their newest conference rivals. Oregon enters a conference that will include 17 other schools across the country with rich and varied histories of their own, both on and off the field.

How Does Oregon Compare to the Big Ten Conference? (BTW Oregonian, it's the Big 10 Conference.)

Smaller? (Kidding!)

Athletic Department spending 9th and Football spending 10th = a darn good ROI; success on the football field beyond the investment.

Revenue 9th. Even as a Junior Partner revenue will increase and then come 2032? Puddles will be flying financially high.
