Top-Heavy: Comparing Current B1G Recruiting, Not Many "Haves"

Recommended Posts

Let's look at the number of Rivals 4/5-Stars for each school in the B1G for the 2025 High School Class. (This does not include portal transfers)

Ohio State: 17  This is an astounding number, and they have 21 verbals total and are No. 1 in the nation at the moment.

Oregon:  12 The Ducks have 14 verbals to date with more coming...

Michigan: 11

Penn State: 11

USC: 9

The Have-Not Line?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Wisconsin: 5

UCLA: 4

Maryland: 3

Nebraska: 3

Washington: 3

Rutgers:  3

Minnesota: 2

Iowa: 1

Illinois: 1

Indiana: 1

Michigan State: 0

Purdue: 0

Northwestern: 0

What conclusions do you arrive at?

I notice two things:

1) the disparity in results between teams with similar talent, (e.g. Michigan vs. Penn St. and Oregon vs. USC)

2. the Buckeyes are loaded.

I suspect two things:

1) Wisconsin at Camp Randal Stadium in November will not be easy

2) Jonathan Smith will find a way of being a nuisance regardless what he has

My take away is that instead of having conferences with 2-3 teams in the mix for the league title, we will now regularly have 4-5 above line contenders along with 1-2 teams below the line that have it all come together in a given year.

So anywhere from 5-7 teams in a given year to legitimately compete for the league title.

Also says to me that 3 loss teams making the new playoff might be more prevalent than most seem to expect.

6 B1G teams currently reside in the 2025 recruiting top 25 - Wisconsin, Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan, OREGON and Ohio State.

10 of the 16 SEC teams are in the top 26.

The schedule may play a role on who plays in the conference championship in any given year. Who you play on the road vs. at home, and who you don’t play can be an advantage.

Oregon recruiting is gaining momentum and they are a solid contender this year. A solid showing in our inaugural season will go a long ways to carrying that forward.

Who knows how that football bounces, but teams already know that Oregon is going to be a tough opponent.
