The loyal companion of ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has passed. His cancer had spread and there was nothing more his family could do for him. I think we can all agree that Ben was the cat’s pajamas. I know The Duck thought so.

That's a shame, losing a pet, your furry friend, you never get over it.

Ben got to fly in private jets and micturate upon the finest gridirons in the land. I’m glad Kirk gave this to him knowing his time was short. I’m going to miss seeing Ben live his best life.

Been ther done that, its always awful. Heartbreaking.

I have had dogs my entire life which means I have faced these tough decision multiple times.  The first few were the hardest and I waited too long.  Though no easier, the later decisions were made with the dog's comfort in the forefront of the timing. The last time I had a vet tech in an emergency clinic tell me that the hardest decision was the best for my dog.

I will never forget what she told me:

"We don't owe our pets eternal life, simply the best possible life every day they are with us."

As with so many things in life, it's about making the most of every day we have.

One of the best breed of  dogs on the planet, may he rest in peace.
