Hard to believe other programs would want up to 50 of their players Historic College Football Program Expecting up to 50 Players to Transfer Amid NCAA Rule Change - Athlon Sports Sorry, I can't get the link to load like normal
Augduck No. 2 Share Posted yesterday at 07:02 PM Hmmm- that is interesting but I wonder if it speaks to a bigger cultural issue in the program. No definitive data points, just wondering.
Dr Hilarius Moderator No. 3 Share Posted yesterday at 07:26 PM Is it normal for teams to have 150 players? Either way, with a limit if 105 players, you would think they would need even more to transfer out in order to make room for a normal high school recruiting class. If not, then that’s really the story: Nebraska is not expecting to sign a single high school recruit.
David Marsh No. 4 Share Posted yesterday at 07:43 PM I mean... how many are being pushed out and how many are opting to leave on their own? I'm sure there is a bit of both but I'd be surprised if we see 50. I think Colorado and Sanders were close to 30 leaving last season and they brought in another 30. I am under the impression that 120 is about the limit between the current 85 scholarship players and the walk-ons to fill out the rest of the roster. Most teams hover around 100 total players between scholarships and walkons. I would imagine that walkons may look to transfer in droves in the hopes of finding a scholarship somewhere, but they do that as it is right now. No clue where they get thus 150 number from. HDuck No. 6 Share Posted yesterday at 07:46 PM Here is an older link about Nebraska and their walk-on program. Osborne's last squad had about 180 players. It was down to 130 in Riley's last season. Then went back up to 150 under Frost. Nebraska's football revenue allows them the additional expense. As the column points out, the walk-ons may not receive tuition scholarships but they get a lot of other financial benefits. Pretty amazing actually. NIL is not restricted to scholarship athletes, so that is how some programs attract players over the 85 scholarship limit. This column is 6 years old, but still interesting in light of today's environment. Will football roster climb to 150?
