Cheating to Win is in Washington's DNA

Recommended Posts

Most would think I am referring to 30 years ago with the "Cheating Championship" the Huskies try to claim, but it actually goes back over a century ago!

Cheating to win becomes common theme in the history of Washington’s success, and it even began back in 1916 when a Husky head coach actively lobbied to have Oregon players declared ineligible in order to pave the way for the Washington to play in Pasadena instead of Oregon. It was disgusting and, fortunately, did not work, as Benzduck has chronicled it better than anyone else.

But wait...there's more from 95 years ago! Washington now turned their dirty dealing to the football field in the 1926 game, as a Husky player came off the bench to tackle Oregon’s Bobby Robinson at midfield while he was returning an interception for a would-be touchdown, doing his best Kenny Wheaton impression almost 68 years earlier to the day.

Adding further insult to injury, in the 1962 game, Washington fans rushed the field and tackled Oregon wideout Larry Hill as he was attempting to catch what would have been the game-winning play, ending the game in a tie. After the game, Oregon Head Coach Len Casanova said, “I don’t know if it made any difference, but you can’t run a very good pattern with 1,800 kids on the field.”

Cheating for over 100 years...it is who the Huskies are.

"You can't teach old dogs new tricks" It's its the way it is. If UW had anything resembling a Track team, their sprinters would start 20 meters ahead in the 100 meters race .Basketball is just as bad,  This is an iconic moment in Ducks-Huskies lore

“Apples don’t rot far from the tree” has to be one of the best descriptions of the Husky football program history of cheating.

Seems like Husky star running back, Hugh McElhaney,  received “untoward” compensation during his football activities at UW—-back in the dark ages.

The joke he popped off with in later years was that, "he took a pay-cut to go to Professional Football!"
