Would Mariota Make Oregon Unbeatable?

Recommended Posts

I mean really unbeatable, like there'd be no need for the "anxiety article.

If the QB from Hawaii that wore No.8 and won the Heisman was the QB of this team, would it be better? I'm not sure if Marcus would have completed the 4th & 9 to Ferg. But he definitely would have got the 9 yards against osu2, and a lot more runs, for a lot more yards during the season.

Speaking of a lot more yards. Jordan James has been great, couldn't ask more from him. But what if it was Bucky Irving instead, or please, LaMichael James? When a hole opens this season, JJ finds it and it's 7 or 8 yards, keep the chain moving. For Bucky, or LMJ, "it's touchdown!"

So, would those changes make this undefeated Oregon team better? Are there any switches you can think of?

For that offense focused on running...Mariota was ideal.  He was so fast.. Gabriel is a good runner, but he is not "Mariota-Fast," but then I believe Dillon is more accurate passing than Marcus.

And yeah...LaMichael had that 4.30s breakaway speed that would create explosion plays for us.  We have a recruit coming in next year to watch...

Dierre Hill has run between 4.27 and 4.40s; he is the MaxPreps Illinois

State Player of the Year, and ran for seven touchdowns in the State Title game.

WATCH: Oregon commit Dierre Hill Jr. totals 518 yards, seven touchdowns in Illinois Class 1A state championship game victory

Some kids don’t hit that in a career.

I love Mariota but DG is more proven in big games than any other QB in program history, and has come through every single time for Oregon. He’s beaten Ohio State, Penn State and Texas (last year), and has Oregon undefeated and the unanimous #1 team in college football.

Like we discussed on a thread a few weeks ago, there are QBs with stronger arms, faster 40 times and better stats but DG is a winner.

DG is like Montana, Brady and Mahomes in college. Marino, Peyton Manning and Lamar Jackson might put up better stats but who would you rather have as your QB in the Super Bowl?

I love Mariota but I'm not sure he would fit this offense like Gabriel does.

However... Justin Herbert in this offense would be a nightmare for any team.

Absolutely, and again, JJ has been great, but Bucky Irving, or LMJ? That would be unreal.

I've gone after Whittington before and he immediately proved me wrong.

But last year's running back tandum of Irving and James I think was much stronger. Whittington just isn't as consistent as either of them and gets stopped a lot easier.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Riggs can do next year.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the differences between DG and Bo. After the Maryland and Wisky games, I was really wondering about the offense and our inability to put more than 30 on the board. I recently rewatched the two games against UW to review Bo’s command of the offense, his run threat and even his arm, and see what were the differences that led us to explode for 40-50 pts in recent season.

But Dillon has such intangible qualities. It took a few games for him to gel in Steins offense. I think he would be even better if he magically had a second season in our system. Despite the difference in physical qualities compared to Marcus, Herbert and Nix, he is a world-class competitor and a true winner. His leadership and confidence during the tough drive is incredible. That 4th and 9 to Ferg was so money! I’d definitely take DG as the QB of the eight remaining teams.

This. I’ve been so impressed with what Bucky has accomplished with Tampa Bay as a rookie. He is so tough and shifty, grinding out games even while injured. We have missed his all around run game this year. But JJ and NW are still an impressive duo. Those runs where they played human dump trucks were among my favorite of the season!! 😎
