30Duck Author Moderator No. 2 Share Posted January 10 Huge win for OBD. That's the 6th Quad1 win for Oregon, only No.1 Auburn has more, 7, and Penn State is another Q1 opponent. Shelstad talks about how the team seems to start slow, and he can't figure out why? Altman and the players really need to figure that out. Getting the ball into Bittle would be a good start at that. So far, the Ducks start games shooting from the outside. If they go in, all's good, keep it up. If they aren't dropping. the idea seems to be, "well, the next one will go in", and they find themselves behind. This makes for exciting games but is not a plan for success.
Sandy Rocks No. 3 Share Posted January 10 It's so unfortunate that they have to waste so much energy on all these comebacks when if they got ahead and stayed ahead they would fair so much better. I would like to see one other consistent scorer emerge for this team. It is such a mystery why Bamba started so good even being named MVP in that tournament where they beat Alabama and is struggling so much. He has had some good games recently. Last year Barthelemy was on fire and could consistently score for them. He got that wonderful three at the end of the last game. Evans has been a consistent 10-12 points. He is doing well this year. This team is so fun to watch.
Ruffian No. 4 Share Posted January 10 these guys got ice water in their veins. sure maybe it would be better to get quicker starts but KNOWING they can come back has gotta be a great thing in the long run. 1

We did try to get the ball into Bittle last game early, they were doubling him up immediately and he did a good job dumping it off to other guys. The problem was that those players were missing wide open looks. We have to start shooting better as a team. We'll have a player or two have a hot hand, but we rarely see a majority of the team have a good shooting night. Angel and Bamba have to start playing better. Evans is getting close to taking over Angel's minutes, I'm personally surprised to see this happen, but Evans is rebounding, defending, and scoring enough to justify it. If he could just get a better handle he would really take a step forward as a prospect. He just has such a bad handle for someone you would expect to be more smooth.

The defense, save for the Illinois game, has been a constant. The offense continues to be enough, almost every game. But shooting, hitting "the wide open looks" would make everything so much easier. 30Duck Author Moderator No. 7 Share Posted January 10 You won't hear this from Altman. Following the game, Cronin publicly berated his team and questioned its toughness. "Obviously, they shot the ball well," Cronin said. "But we're soft. We're too soft to play hard enough. Even in the [crucial moments], you can't get a rebound. ... So don't tell me you want to win. Just don't tell you want to win. I mean, we're soft. To be fair, they have a unique skill set. But we're soft."
Sandy Rocks No. 8 Share Posted January 10 The announcers during the broadcast were saying that Angel is probably the most intelligent player on the team by far. He can take over a game but he hangs back. This team badly needs a third shooter and they could go far. The team can't always expect Shelstad and Bittle to bail them out. When you see how much talent is on this team and how much better they could be it can make you frustrated. I guess they need to be pushed. I don't mean to be nickpickety. They all play good defense and I saw an improvement this last game. They know they can shut teams down. It's like they are toying with teams.
Desert Duck No. 9 Share Posted January 10 After getting the crapola kicked out of them by Illinois, and then barely beating unranked maryland, you just don't know what to expect from these guys. So this road win over a strong OSU team is pretty huge. Hopefully they will continue to gel together as we head into the meat of the season.
Sandy Rocks No. 10 Share Posted January 11 This team actually seems to be more focused on the road than at home which is amazing since playing back in the midwest, they hardly have any fans. Maybe they are more distracted by things at home.

Maybe they are more distracted by things at home. A very confusing team. Except for the Illinois game, where everything went wrong, a home game, the defense has been a constant. They literally shot twice as well in the 2nd half against osu2, 58% , than in the 1st half, 29%. They've talked about the slow starts. That could be what this team really improves later in the season.
Desert Duck No. 12 Share Posted January 11 Two losses, and both at home. Although given that Matt Court seems like it's rarely more than about half full, I'm not so sure it's a tremendous home court advantage.

MKA is devoid of any innovation at all. The floor looks better now, but that's a very low bar. 1
Desert Duck No. 14 Share Posted January 11 Don't like the floor. Never have. And at Mac Court, the fans were right on top of the floor... and on top of the opposing players. It was like the Autzen version of a basketball court. Sadly, it's almost like they deliberately built MKA to lose all the magic of Mac Court.

After playing at Mac Court, he was quoted as calling the fans "Deranged Idiots." Naturally, we all took it as a compliment. Pins and t-shirts were made up with that quote and sold like hotcakes. The very large Romania Chevrolet scoreboard over Center Court, as you probably recall, would literally bounce up and down and ball players were understandably intimidated to go under it. It was the game against Tyus Edney where we pulled it out and won at the very end. That game was absolutely INSANE. I think it was 1994 maybe? My girlfriend grew up in Tucson and was a life long UA fan. Her parents were season ticket holders and she went to all the games growing up. At the time, she was at another school. She was visiting me and I was able to get her a student ID and student ticket for the game from a friend. That girlfriend is now my wife and she STILL talks about that game all the time and says it was the craziest sporting event she has ever been to in her life. I don’t live close anymore, but I have been to a few games at the new arena and it actually made me a little bit sad. The current students just have no idea what it was like in there. The new arena has a casual, NBA feel to it. And it is not just the arena that is the issue. It all feels so scripted (student chants / that DJ dude, etc) it almost feels forced. Glad I was a student before it changed. Those were good times!!! Edited January 11 by GeotechDuck 2
Sandy Rocks No. 19 Share Posted January 11 I remember watching the UCLA game on TV. It was so exciting. In those days USC dominated football and UCLA basketball but after that game things started to change. My parents were big duck fans. They even went once and took in the Far West Classic. I remember they raved about seeing Magic Johnson. That was a wonderful tournament and they got some great teams. I know all these teams now want to go to the exotic locations. 1
spartan2785 No. 20 Share Posted January 11 If the people that make the decisions on Matt Court operations were smart they would get rid of the DJ, have the band play during every timeout, no kiss cam, no any kind of the shanigans with the camera, cheerleaders on the court or maybe some sort of student led competition. Basically treat it like the focus is on the game, not getting on the jumbotron. It's stupid how they have lost fans yet the prices go up. Attendance is probably at an all time low and they probably don't give a you know what because they think we all want a NBA experience which NOBODY WANTS!!! Students are probably the worst they have been ever as well. 2

It is such a phenomenal memory. I was in 6th grade at the time and we had a basketball game that afternoon. I can't remember if we won our game or not, but I do remember us all tearing out of the gymnasium, jumping into the cars, and everyone turning on the radio just in time to catch the last 4 minutes of the game. We all went a bit nuts when we won that game. And then, the icing on top, was a week later the Sports Illustrated cover coming out. Our little corner of the world almost never got any national press so this was a big deal.

But averaging 17 boards a game in your senior season is off the charts insane. And to win 7 NBA championships is one amazing run. I had to look him up and what a career. He also averaged 20 ppg his senior year, still holds the Oregon record for most rebounds in a single game with 32 (nearly 70 years later), and was the #3 pick in the draft. I'm embarrassed that I didn't know who he was.
