Augduck No. 2 Share Posted 9 hours ago Fair and reasonable assessment. The upside is the issue with longer DBs is being addressed. Hopefully the guys waiting in the wings are ready to go and having Jalil Florence back next year should help. Bellotti’s point about Dan having the framework in place is a good one. 30Duck Moderator No. 3 Share Posted 9 hours ago Bigger DB's would definitely help. In a Bowl game especially, a rough start can be really devastating. Not playing for 3 weeks, then having your first game against a team that that demolished their opponent a week earlier is a recipe for what happened in the Rose Bowl.

In the history of sport, has a No. 1 seed been abused by the PO format as OBD was this season? The 7th seed vs. the 8th seed for the championship would be major news if the world did not see how badly the format was fouled up. One more year before Tony and Greg get the format fixed. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez thinks the format is 'perfect.'
Washington Waddler Moderator No. 5 Share Posted 8 hours ago Good assement, but pretty much leaves me where I was before: what are the Ducks’ “shortcomings”, and how do we learn to handle such situations, “largely specific to that moment and that matchup”? MikeJ No. 6 Share Posted 8 hours ago Very interesting article. Evan Stewart being unavailable made the problem of Ohio State taking away our crossing patterns worse, weakening the deep threat that you would hope would open up. But the most interesting point looking forward is the one about Dante Moore and Lanning using only 5th-year-plus transfer QBs so far. It has been pretty glaring to me the last several years that Oregon has basically ignored giving their backup QBs any playing time, even in blowout wins. There is reason to believe, and hope, that Dante will come along fine next year (he's started previously at UCLA and has gotten rave reviews from Tez, etc.), but I'd feel better if he'd gotten in there a bit this year. Thinking back over the years, we definitely did more to get next-in-line QBs some game time vs. having them remain untested question marks. 1
HDuck No. 7 Share Posted 7 hours ago DB size has always been a "problem" at Oregon as long as I can remember. It has always been an issue when facing USC receivers. But, tall DBs can be as rare as size in D-linemen/backers. That being said, here is a list of all DBs that were on the roster. I would note the names toward the tall end of this list are freshmen or RS freshmen. Apparently an attempt is being made by our defensive minded head coach to rectify the problem. 5-9: Rod Pleasant, Timon Davis 5-10: Tysheem Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Jabbar Muhammad, Dontae Manning, Nikko Reed, Kam Alexander, Jacob Pruitt 5-11: Kobe Savage, Zach Grisham 6-0: Solomon Davis, Aaron Flowers, Dane Spios 6-1: Jahill Florence, Ify Obidegwu, Daylen Austin, Cruz Rushing 6-2: Dakota Fields, Peyton Woodard, Xavier Barksdale 6-4: Sione Laulea 6-5: Kingston Lopa

As the article pointed out the Buckeyes had three weeks between the Michigan butt kicking lesson and the demolition of Tennessee. Beat them as bad as the Ducks with three weeks off. They used the time as a lesson and to get their act together. As far as what the Ducks need going forward, experience at the highest levels is the number one. Sometimes a good butt kicking is just what you need when you are cruising high on yourself.

I believe that the layoff is part of the story. All four top seeded playoff teams with the extra break, lost in the second round. Tennessee had just as long off as Ohio State so there was no advantage in that first round. Ohio State has the better athletes (across the board), better / more experienced coordinators and position coaches who out-schemed Oregon's and players who had a chip on their shoulder having lost the first game in Eugene, losing to their arch rival (again) and listening to how their coach was going to get fired. It was the perfect storm and Oregon was not prepared / dialed in. 1
cartm25 No. 10 Share Posted 5 hours ago As many have pointed out, I think the Ducks need taller DBs. They also need bigger, more athletic DLineman. The OL is baffling to me because they did such a good job against osu in their first matchup, and so poorly in the playoff. IMO, that would point to scheme issues rather than player talent disparity, no? Here's hoping an OL with limited time together can gel quickly next year. And of course, no more important position than QB. I sure hope Dante Moore is everything the hype says he is. From the highlights I've seen, he might have the best "arm talent" a Duck QB has ever had; he can flick the ball downfield with apparent ease. Hope he has the decision making and processing to match the arm. While I love Tez Johnson, player's hyping other players on the team have always gone in one ear and out the other, for me. I simply don't care what a player says about the quality of other teammates . . . they will always hype up their friends and teammates. Once I start hearing it from coaches, then I'll start to get excited.

Dante Moore throws a beautiful ball. However, IMHO, he does not have the arm strength of Justin Herbert (very few QBs do). You’re spot on, his (and Oregon’s) success will come down to his familiarity with the offense and decision making. I think Oregon fans should temper their expectations until we see how Dante plays against good teams. We should not expect him to step in and be as good as 5th/6th year QBs.
