After 50 Years...USS Nimitz is on Her Last Deployment

Recommended Posts

She is to be replaced by the new Gerald Ford Class Aircraft Carrier USS John F. Kennedy, but first the USS Nimitz is headed out for her last deployment, which might be a signficant one in the Middle East.

Anybody here have any memories on this honored vessel?

I spent 8 years aboard CVN 68. started as a member of S5, preparing food for the officers, luckily, I got out of that, and was assigned to the Masters At Arms force. Which provided me the opportunity to cover every inch, the cooks work horrendously long hours. Along the way, I was put in charge of managing the XO, he didn't care for sports, so he gave me his season tickets to the Seahawks.

The Nimitz was big, but when we’d pull into a port, some of my shipmates couldn't find it after a night of imbibing. The jet pilots were usually very cool, as were the guys who would wave their arms while the jets landed on the flight deck. Of course, it was the E8's -E9's, Sr. and Master Chiefs who made things go, and the smart Lt's knew this. The Marines, when kept fed. were generally sane.

Wow.  Eight years is a chunk of your life, and I thank you for your service to the nation.  Was there a particular location you enjoyed, or was memorable to you?

It must have been cool to be on the flagship of that carrier class...

Anybody else here serve or be on-board the Nimitz?

Dismantling and recycling a small American city? Wow. But could be the pilot project for how to resolve the problem of Corvallis?

I did not enter the military, but my brother went Navy, and was on the Enterprise, CVN 65. She was older than the Nimitz, and not as large.

He helped maintain the nuclear power plant. He spent 6 years in the Navy, but was not on the carrier the entire time. He definitely saw a lot of the globes oceans, and various ports of call in the 70’s.

The Carrier is a small town population wise, and he said it is pretty cramped quarters when sailing.

It was cool. My first day I showed up and walked up the gangplank showed a sailor a card, and he told me some sailor jargon that I didn't know at the time. But somebody heard him, and told me to follow him, I did, and was directed to the S5 birthing compartment...imagine the old Mac Court locker room. The Nimitz was not luxurious for us sailors, the officers, especially, the XO, Captain and Admiral, on occasion had it okay.

Australia, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, playing basketball on the flight deck. You learned not to think about how long the deployment was, 1 day at a time got you through it.
