Oregon Football: Nico Iamaleava Should Not Be a Duck

Recommended Posts

Our Oregon football program has lost most of its 2024 offensive identity in the offseason. Tez Johnson, Dillon Gabriel, Jordan James, and Josh Conerly Jr. are a few of the many faces on offense we won’t see return to Autzen this upcoming season. Among the players that head coach Dan Lanning has added in the past few months, Nico Lamaleava should not ...

Iamaleava is a seminal figure, somehow representing both ends of the pendulum swing of player empowerment.

I'm all in on staying far, far away from Iamaleava, Moore, or Novosad, should be QB. No.1. I also get that a home grown QB would be the best. But, with Addams, Nix, Gabriel, it's hard to say that going transfer just won't work. Tyler Thompson stayed.

Tyler Shough was at Oregon, then Texas Tech, then Louisville. Now he's projected to be in the Top 5 of QB's in the coming NFL Draft. It's working out For Oregon this year, with Moore, a quazi transfer, Novosad might transfer out, but there is a good batch of QB's lined up to be a QB at Oregon. It looks like Lanning has managed to keep getting commits to Oregon, while also being open to a transfer as well or better than any other coach. Osu2 won the Natty last year with a transfer QB.

Alex, thanks for the article. I agree that we do not need or want to have the ex Tennessee QB on our team.

I will disagree with your comment that Moore needs to be the starter this year. The QB that needs to be the starter is the player that the coaches decide is the best to lead the team this fall. I think Novosad is in the mix to be the starting QB. I do not see practices but I thought Novosad looked like the best QB on the field in last years spring game. Whichever of the two QB's gets the starting job, I think we need to have the other QB stay with the team and not transfer. If we go into next fall with only Moore or Novosad then we will only be one injury away from not making the playoffs.

I have confidence that we can make the playoffs with either player as our starting QB but we need the other player to be available if an unfortunate injury occurs.

Most important thing to me is getting up on opponents early so our backup, who ever that is, can get some quality playing time for actual development. Way too many close games last year to get a feeling for any of our back up QBs. Foot on the gas!!!

We have largely unregulated free agency in CFB and for so long as this is the situation you should not pass on experienced QBs like Bo and Gabe. Back-to-back transfers who both made a Heisman Trophy trip to NYC. A trip along with Dan Lanning that paid dividends in recruiting across all positions.

Can you get me to the League? Can you get me to the CFB playoffs? Will you compensate me at my market value and give me a chance to compete for a starting job? Oregon and Dan can answer all three questions with a no BS 'Yes.'

No QB recruit in the past three seasons had the skill or the experience to lead Oregon where it ascended to in 2022, 23, and 24. Recruits at every position regardless of their stars and stats out of high school will be promised a chance to compete but not a promise to start from Coach Lanning.

Roster building and roster retention in CFB today is a witch. You have to be flexible. The two QBs who started in the 2024-25 champ game both transferred in. Despite talented recruits on the roster, without Will Howard and Riley Leonard, Ohio State and Notre Dame are not playing for a championship.

Close to 70% of the Power 4 starting QBs in 2025 will have transferred in.

At every position, I trust Dan to mix and match as he so determines.

Imagine him having to take a pay cut or thinking a guy like Bill Belichick will treat him with the same kid gloves as Heupel. Tennessee fans are notoriously pretty rough on struggling players. Not Nico though.

I feel bad that his mom is sick and he's the provider for his family. But his family couldn't get by off two million a year? Why isn't his father working? Michael Jordan's father worked well after his son became a NBA superstar.
