Chaotic SEC

For as dysfunctional and at times disinterested it appears the PAC12 can be, it's not this:

A strange hire by a program with unrealistic expectations at the level of Texas. Malzahn defeated Saint Nick thrice but let's run him off? As HC at UCF Malzahn defeated Florida last season. Auburn may be dysfunctional and the conference has cheaters galore, most recently Ole Miss and Tennessee, but as a whole it is far from dysfunctional. It sends the most guys to the NFL year after year and has yet to miss the Playoff.

Year after year SEC teams dominate recruiting. On 2 occasions the SEC has placed 2 teams in the final 4 and twice Bama has played UGA for a championship.  ESPN is about to pay the SEC $300M+ a year; CBS paid $55M a year for the same rights. The SEC Network, owned and operated by ESPN, is super successful. After the next media go round every SEC team will be receiving @$70M+ a year in revenue distribution.

Thanks for the great post. But I would love it if the Pac-12 was as dysfunctional as the SEC.

Absolutely, while the Pac-12 has been as active as clay, the SEC has gotten where it is by an organized, driven effort to get there. "It means more" isn't just a slogan. The Presidents of the SEC schools all want to see their teams in the top 25.

FWIW - CBS Draft guru, Kyle Stackpole, has 11 SEC players from 7 different schools being drafted in the 1st round.

Pac-12 - 4 KT, OR., Edge to NY Jets; 13. London WR, SC, Browns; 19. Lloyd LB, Utah, Eagles; 21. McDuffie CB, UW, Patriots.

This is pretty much the theme of all of the NFL draft prognosticators.

NFL Network draft guru, D. Jeremiah, has 5 Pac-12 guys in his list of top 50 draft eligible players. The above 4 and CB Gordan from UW. Many the SEC player in his top 50.

Auburn is a complete mess and it all revolves around a guy named Bobby Lowder. He’s the one who pushed Gus out the door. Then, he tried to lure Mario away, but he got his new contract from Oregon so that fell through. It was speculated that if Oregon hadn’t replaced Washington in the Pac 12 championship game then Auburn may have had a shot. It’s obviously a moot point nowadays.

If that isn’t enough, Lowder then tried to push his boy Kevin Steele for the Auburn job (some say Steele was also behind Gus’ firing), but that idea sent the fans into an uproar (#stopsteele). So, they hired Harsin who didn’t want Steele on his staff. Steele then went to Tennessee as DC for Pruitt which lasted 6 days. Pruitt was fired and Steele was named interim HC. The funny part is Gus goes to UCF to replace Heupel, who took the Tennessee job and promptly fired Steele.

I’m surprised Mario hired Steele because he doesn’t have the best reputation. However, this whole fecal extravaganza was started by Bobby Lowder because Gus didn’t beat Saban enough times. The only other school with worse boosters is Texas. If they don’t at least go to the playoffs next year Sark will be fired. You can count on it.

Great take. Yet, Malzahn beat Nick on 3 occasions. The boosters at Auburn and Texas screw up both programs. UT looks down its nose at little old Baylor in Waco but Baylor today is superior in both CFB + CBB. Auburn has dropped in the SEC W behind Bama, of course,  A+M, Ole Miss and perhaps, even Arkansas.

Sounds like Standard Operating Procedure in CFB to me.
