I saw my first Ducks game on September 6, 1980, a 35-25 loss to Stanford. (Sigh.) Happier days followed--the Ducks that year finished with a 6-3-2 record, including a 34-10 shellacking of the #13 Huskies in Seattle, and a 7-7 tie versus #2 USC at Autzen. The 1980 Ducks did not play a bowl game--unlike today, six wins did not guarantee a bowl-game berth. Only 15 bowl games were scheduled in the 1980-81 season, compared to 44 bowl games in 2021-22. Oregon was led by a magnificent option quarterback, Reggie Ogburn, who had also guided the team to six wins in 1979. Back then, those back-to-back winning seasons were as rare as a Bigfoot sighting. The head coach of the Ducks in 1980? It was none other than Rich Brooks, in his fourth year at the helm. Interesting fact: Brooks was just 35 years old when he accepted the head-coaching position at Oregon, the same age that Dan Lanning is now. Is it possible that Brooks is now, gulp, 80 years old? Time doesn't fly; it simply evaporates. Here's to good health and much happiness for Mike Bellotti, Justin Herbert, and Rich Brooks, a legendary trio of Our Beloved Ducks. Haywarduck No. 6 Share Posted March 8, 2022 Love it, Brooks started at the same age and they named the field after him. Let's see Lanning get the stadium renamed after him! Make yourself legendary at Oregon Dan!
