Now I am speculating...but he might be a "tweener" in the new defense? Not a speed pass-rusher, but not a big body at 285 pounds?

 

Or it could be something completely different, but the coaches were working for a replacement.

    He was away during the spring for personal reasons. In not surprised he has entered the transfer portal. 

     

    It also makes sense why Oregon is pursuing another defensive lineman through the portal. 

     

    Lanning knows what he wants and needs to run his defense. Williams may not fit the bill.
