Oregon: Ranked One of Best Quarterback Producing Schools

Recommended Posts

Didn't know we were thought of that high. Note the listing of QB's they have. Ironic this piece comes as our FishDuck article is on developing QB's.

Marcus Mariota. Justin Herbert. Joey Harrington. It’s definitely safe to say that Oregon belongs in the “QB-U” category.

Let's go back another 50 years with Oregon Ducks that were successful in the NFL. Starting in 1948 with Norm Van Brocklin and every decade since: George Shaw, Bob Berry, Dan Fouts, Chris Miller, Bill Musgrave and AJ Feeley.

Whoa! How can you leave out "No Problem" Norv Turner?  Well, I guess we're talking about ex-Duck quarterbacks who've been successful in the NFL as quarterbacks...  😉

That list really shows how hard it is to develop QBs.  How many underwhelming players and outright busts in the NFL were produced by those top 5 programs that were still listed as "notable":  Landry Jones, Harrington, Tua, Sanchez, Baker Mayfield, Brian Brohm, etc.

Out of the 24 QBs listed, probably 5 can be considered stars (Herbert, Carson Palmer, Lamar Jackson, and maybe Kyler Murray and Mac Jones).  The rest were short-term backups (Dixon, Brohm) or mediocre players (Leinart, Bradford, Bridgewater).

Given the poor success rate, can anyone be considered QB U?

Oregon does have TWO starting quarterbacks in the NFL right now.

Herbert is pretty much a lock for stardom if he continues has he has. Mariota has all the skills if the right fit is there.

Here's hoping for those two quarterbacks staying in the NFL for years to come. And maybe adding a third to the mix... Nix? Thompson? Moore?

Norv was on my first list as well as Reggie Ogburn who spent time in the CFL as a QB, running back and receiver.

Thing is….that list is mostly a testament to what Oregon once had. If you look closely you see just one name since Mariota. It’s Herbert.

Before Mariota and for three decades, every regular starter went on to play professionally.  I’m trying to break this all down in next piece for Charles. A look at what happened to Quarterback U. Runs Aug 23.
