Dillingham's Offense vs. Kelly's Offense

Recommended Posts

While not a complete comparison by any means (Kelly's the H.C. of course) there seems to be ONE major difference emerging in the still too-early comparison: Oregon, under Lanning & Dilly can score just as fast, just as creatively and just as explosively, BUT the Oregon Ducks are winning the T.O.P. (time of possession).

Imagine a team that scores like O and then couple that somehow with keeping the ball away from the Opponent longer than you keep it.  Oregon won the time of possession 33:27 to 27:33 for UCLA.  What was the topic headline awhile back by McDuck?    'Ruh-Roh!'

Kenny and Bo Show rules the day in big Oregon win over No. 9 UCLA

The best transfer duo in the Pac-12 revealed itself on Saturday at Autzen Stadium as The Kenny and Bo Show took over

for the No. 10 Oregon Ducks in a 45-30 win over visiting No. 9 UCLA that was nowhere near as close as the final score indicates.

Kenny Dillingham and Bo Nix teamed up to give Oregon the edge against an overmatched UCLA defense in the Ducks' big win on Saturday.

The Ducks are getting better every time they play - on both sides of the ball.  If this keeps up things could get really, really interesting.  Bo might get a little bit of love from the Heisman crowd after this but esp if the improvement keeps up.

Oregon could have scored another TD at the end of the game.  They had plenty of time to do so.  Instead Lanning chose to run out the clock.  It could have been 52-30.  But, wasn't the right thing to do.

When they choose to... The tempo can be ramped up and down successfully.

The problem during the Kelly-Helfrich eras was that Oregon couldn't slow the tempo down to burn clock effectively.

I think a big component of that is that we now have some big time linemen who can use their size and power to dominate a downhill running game.

I'm not saying Tempo is gimmicky at all... It is a strategy and when used effectively it is difficult to combat but for it to work it needs to be used a lot of the time.

Kelly's UCLA guys just didn't have the size to stop Oregon's run game when confronted with that much power. So going slow or fast didnt matter as much.

Ka-Boom!  There-in lies the difference.  The BIG difference.  If O can distill this and bottle it they'll bring home a Championship!
