The path for the 4-seed and Pac-12 Tournament bye for the Ducks

The Oregon men's basketball team still has a very good chance at securing a top-four seed in the Pac-12 tournament next week in Las Vegas. The mission is simple and if accomplished could play a huge role in a chance at the NCAA Tournament in two weeks.

Going into the final week of the regular season in men's college basketball, Oregon sits alone in fifth place in the Pac-12 with a 10-8 record.

Oregon is one game out of fourth-place Arizona State (11-7) and they sit half a game up on Utah (10-9) who is in fifth place. The stakes are high for the Ducks as they gear up for their final two games of the year, both at home.

Ducks fall off of NCAA Tournament bubble in latest version of bracketology

The month of March is just right around the corner and the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team not being on the bubble for the NCAA tournament wouldn’t be a surprise if this was November.

Going into the Big Dance should have been a sure thing for the Ducks. They were picked to finish third in the Pac-12, a spot that would have put them in the NCAA tournament without any problem.

But the season hasn’t gone according to plan and even with Oregon’s last-second victory in Corvallis, it wasn’t enough to put the Ducks on the bubble, according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

As things stand now, if Oregon (16-13, 10-8) doesn’t make some kind of magical run in the Pac-12 tournament down in Las Vegas next week, the Ducks will be NIT bound.

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

It’s a position Dana Altman’s Ducks haven’t been in too often in recent years, but Oregon is clearly off the bubble for the Big Dance.

Brennan Rigsby questionable for Thursday's game vs California

Oregon sophomore guard Brennan Rigsby missed the team's come-from-behind victory at Oregon State this past weekend due to an ankle sprain. His status for the team's upcoming home game against California on Thursday is still in limbo.

"He went a little today. Then he left and I didn't get a chance to ask him if Clay [Oregon's trainer] took him off or if he pulled himself off," said head coach Dana Altman. "But he did practice today, so he's close. Whether he's ready to go Thursday night I am not sure."

Oregon is hoping to get Rigsby back on the floor to help provide rest for starting point guard Will Richardson who has been dealing with his own set of injuries. Richardson has been limited in practice after almost not playing in the team's win against Oregon State on Saturday.

If ASU gets swept by the LA schools and Oregon splits with Cal and Stanford, does Oregon not get the 4 seed?  ASU and Oregon would both be 11-9 in that case.  Oregon should have the tie breaker over ASU in that case with a win against USC.  Am I missing something?

Also, what happens in that case if Utah beats Colorado?  Now you have three teams that are 11-9.

What's at stake tonight for Oregon men's basketball against Cal

Thursday night the Oregon Ducks will play their second-to-last game of the regular season, and the Ducks go into the night knowing they still have some form of life for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

The Ducks sit No. 51 in the latest NCAA Net Rankings. What's at stake for the Ducks this evening in regard to their push for an at-large bid and Pac-12 seeding?

Let's discuss the Pac-12 Tournament first. Oregon is still in play for the No. 4 seed, but simply winning their final two games won't get the job done. Oregon will need a little bit of help.

That help comes via the league champion UCLA. The Bruins will host the current No. 4 in the league standings Arizona State Thursday night. Oregon needs ASU to lose this game and Oregon to knock off Cal and Stanford. If the Sun Devils win at UCLA on Thursday, the Ducks will get knocked out of the race for the No. 4 seed.

Hi GeotechDuck. Read the article I just posted above. It will lay out the scenario for you. The Ducks do need some help.

  • It looks like Oregon wins the 3 way tie break because they played Utah and ASU twice each.  Where ASU and Utah only played once.
  •
  • For two-team tie
  • 1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.

    2. Each team's record (won-lost percentage) vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage. When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team's record (won-lost percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group's own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.

  •
  • For multiple-team tie

1. Results (won-lost percentage) of collective head-to-head competition during the regular season among the tied teams.

Oregon:

vs ASU 1-1

vs Utah 2-0

vs UCLA 0-2

vs UA 1-1

vs USC 1-0

ASU:

vs Oregon 1-1

vs Utah 1-0

vs UCLA 0-1 with 1 to play

vs UA 1-1

vs USC 0-1 with 1 to play

Utah

vs Oregon 0-2

vs ASU 0-1

vs UCLA 0-2

vs UA 1-1

vs USC 0-2

@Tandaian - Nice update!  So it looks like we are in good position for the 3-way tie as well.

@Penn Duck - Thank you for all the information you post for us to read!  I just got confused when I read the 247 article, which states "In short, Oregon needs to win out and see either ASU get swept by the LA schools or lose at UCLA."  Why does Oregon need to win out? I am probably missing something, but here is what I am thinking:

If Oregon splits and ASU gets swept, both team finish 11-9.  The tie breaker is then record against the highest rated team, correct?  Both would be 0-2 against UCLA, so it moves to AZ.  Both are 1-1 against AZ, so it moves to USC.  Oregon would be 1-0 and ASU would be 0-2 USC.  Tie breaker goes to Oregon.

Seems like Oregon would get the 4 seed with a split and ASU getting swept.  Am I missing something?

Oregon blows out California with impressive showing at home

Oregon was dominant on both ends of the floor against Cal. The Bears shot just 35 percent from the floor, making just two 3-pointers. Cal also finished the game with just 21 rebounds.

The Ducks shot 55 percent from the floor after spending most of the game over 60, committed just seven total turnovers, and beat the Bears in rebounding by 24 with 45 total rebounds. Oregon turned 15 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.

MBB Recap: Ducks blow out Cal, 84-51, in penultimate home game of season

History was made before the first point was even scored on Thursday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

As soon as the ball was tipped, Will Richardson entered the record books.

Oregon’s game against the California Golden Bears marked the 145th time that Richardson laced them up in his college career, giving him the most games of anyone in Ducks’ history. Both Jonathan Lloyd and Payton Pritchard previously held the record at 144 career games.

As far as the rest of the game went, it was largely uneventful. The Ducks managed to build a sizeable lead late in the first half and never looked back, which gave the starters and hobbled players a chance to rest through the waning minutes of the game.

Tyrone Williams' team-first approach draws high praise from Dana Altman

Tyrone Williams arrived at Oregon this offseason with high expectations to be a regular rotation player for Oregon after starring as one of the junior college's most prolific scorers in the last few seasons.

Not getting into college until late into the summer has made cracking the rotation this year difficult. Yet Williams' effort and attitude is why Dana Altman was praising the junior guard after Oregon's 84-51 win against California.

"I really respect the fact that he stayed with it. I kept telling him that he was paying attention because one of these nights I am going to call on you and I hope you're ready," Altman said of Williams.

Couisnard's hot shooting and Oregon's adjustments to the physicality power the Ducks blowout win

Thursday night in Eugene the Oregon Duck men's basketball team needed about 10 minutes to adjust to the style of play visiting California wanted to play with. Once the Ducks found their groove, the game tipped in Oregon's favor and the Ducks ran away with the blowout victory.

"We started off the game turning it over quite a bit, but as the game went on we did a much better job," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman.

The Ducks committed six turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game but then committed just one more turnover over the next 30 minutes of play. Oregon's adjustment to Cal's approach to defending Oregon was the difference in the 84-51 win.

Brennan Rigsby lost for the year due to injury, Lok Wur also out with another injury

The Oregon Ducks have been hit by the injury bug once again this season, and it's now ended the season of one of Oregon's guards while another reserve might be out for an extended period of time.

Following Oregon's blowout win over visiting California on Thursday night, Dana Altman announced that sophomore reserve guard Brennan Rigsby will miss the team's remaining games and be out of action for the rest of the year.

"Brennan has broken a finger and he's out for the year," said Altman.
