None of this matters as the catcher didn't have the ball. This was obstruction and it was an inexcusable call.

So much for the "legitimacy" of college baseball... It doesn't matter if we would have won or not based on that call. What matters is that the officiating crew violated the spirit of the game, the spirit of sportsmanship, if not the rules themselves. Can anyone explain what the runner was supposed to do? The catcher didn't have the ball AND was blocking the plate. Not only was he blocking the plate but as the runner approached the plate the catcher dropped his shin/lower leg to block any attempt at a slide. This call was an absolute outrage. The game should be replayed. The crew should be terminated with cause.

Yes, and no. It cost the game, but Oregon should have pitched better, hit better, and not made one play decide the game. I better really soak up and enjoy this weekend, because it is probably the last of Oregon baseball for this year. I just do not think we have enough pitchers to win four games straight, especially when we’re playing Arizona in the last two games, with the worst of our pitchers by that time. Oh well, I still love my Ducks, and got to see a lot of winning baseball this year…

Ole Miss isn't UCLA, or Oklahoma or Texas, but this was a big win for the Ducks, their early errors, two by Freshman Rylee McCoy, who was pulled from 1st base, and one by gold glove winning shortstop, Paige Sinicki, ended up not hurting them. It appears the Texas Longhorns are more than happy to play at Ohio State at Noon. Their reason? Well apparently it's because the AD doesn't want to play Sunday night because of personal reasons. I won't mock him for his reason because I understand. However I doubt it's true because Texas has played on Sunday before. Plus Texas has a private jet that could get him from Austin at 2 pm and get to Columbus in two hours. We love football in the South and we have traditional beliefs. But I've never hear of an AD making millions blow so much smoke. Texas is no longer burnt orange, they're yellow. I wonder if Ohio State will try something next year because we all know they're very touchy about slights. I'm sure they're still chapped about Oregon beating them last year off what they call a cheap play, but it was actually Lanning knowing the rules. I heard the Oregon at Penn State game will be a 7pm btw. That's going to be an awesome environment. Oregon should wear all black and come out to the Darth Vader theme.

A few years back I think the NCAA added the "Collision Rule" (8-7) which made nearly any significant contact at the plate by the baserunner to the catcher above the waist an out, unless the player is clearly sliding toward the base. The rule basically defines contact above the waste as an illegal attempt to dislodge the ball. As SmithRiver points out, I think if tagged out, there would have been obstruction. Taking a quick look at 8-7, there doesn't seem to be anything covering if the act of obstructing directly leads to a runner contacting the catcher above the waist (so I guess replay looked first to the runner having responsibility to approach the catcher in a full slide, not starting a slide, I don't know?). I guess now in this situation a player must potentially take the out and hope for obstruction rather than risk hitting the catcher up high. Tough to teacher a player to do. Sort of reminds me of the early years of targeting in football where players just had to learn they could no longer do certain things? Even if the catcher is doing it wrong, the baserunner needs to first make sure they won't contact up high (which I'd agree isn't always easy when a catcher is crouching down to try for a tag).

Speakin' of bright spots. The Ducks won 11 in a row at one point. I'm just not ready to count them out yet. I've seen too much grit this season. Here's hoping for the best.

This was one of the worst calls I've seen in baseball. Why is no one (including the tv announcers) screaming about the fact that at the last second Aroz tries to get down into a leg slide, thus trying to avoid contact (read creaming the catcher which he did a nice job of)?! Yes, he creamed him anyway. BUT HE TRIED NOT TO! THERE WAS OBSTRUCTION! Home plate umpire had it right. Bottom line: We got screwed royally. Silver lining: Ducks got the stuff to beat someone twice. Women did it. Side note: I almost felt bad for the Mississippi pitcher after she walked in the winning run......Almost........

Don’t know whether to assign this to the Ironic or Academic Prowess Dept. - maybe both: During the game, the roving tv camera would occasionally pick out a Rebel holding a sign reading, “BEAT EVERYBODY!” Guess that Ole Miss fan didn’t quite understand that ‘everybody’ includes themselves.

As everyone thinks about the umps, keep in mind the home plate ump called him safe. It was the NCAA review crew somewhere that made the call after a several minutes delay while they checked Aunt Polly's Cookbook for an interpretation.

6-5 works for the softball team. it was a long game after 7 innings, and got even longer, but it ended for Ole Miss as the Ducks had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, then walked in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
