  1. Yikes.  In a year they've lost 2 ADs, DeBoer leaving (along with 20 out of 22 starters), and their men's BB coach fired.  A quote from an article from a well-known Fuskies site about this subject:

    Quote

The confluence of events over the last year raise massive questions about Washington’s overall athletics department. To have 2 separate ADs plus the football HC all choose to move to other jobs (the ADs both within the same conference) speaks to much larger structural issues. It seems clear that either financial, cultural, or institutional issues have caused everyone who gets close to the core of UW sports to decide they weren’t likely to have long-term success.

Perhaps some of those puppy homers are starting to realize that UW isn't quite the destination they thought it was.

  2. Great article Duckster.  True college football fans who really scrutinize the details appreciate the in depth analysis of what made those recruiting classes truly succeed or not.

I was in a debate on a YouTube video regarding what Cam Ward's upcoming season would potentially look like and oh boy, those Miami fans are a special kind of delirious.  You'd think Mario was some kind of deity to them.  Despite tons of proof that QBs regularly regress under his regimes they put their heads in the sand.  Poor Cam, unless some miraculous change happens he has probably cost himself a lot of NFL money when he finally goes to the draft.

  3. I know the focus on QBs throwing the deep ball is because it's the "sexy" skill to look at.  But I'd argue that the more important traits to look for if you're searching for a starting QB are maturity, high IQ, and quick decision making (all three Bo has in spades).  Bo has shown us that he can throw the long ball decently well, his arm strength isn't elite like Justin Herbert's but it's adequate.  I think I read an article somewhere recently (I can't find it at the moment) where the the NFL scout states that the vast majority of passes in the NFL are short/mid length anyway.  So having elite arm strength is certainly a plus but not a dealbreaker.

I think if Bo continues to show he can hit those 20-40 yard range passes with deadly accuracy like he has been the last couple seasons, he'll be in a good place in the draft.

  4. I don't know if he's underrated so much as he's underestimated.  College football fans that don't pay close attention to the Oregon program generally only focus on his losses to DeBoer and neglect to notice what he's done overall in his 2 years as a HC.  Not only that, they usually don't notice the constant, gradual cycle of improvement we see DL and his staff going through from game to game.

DeBoer is an excellent game coach but you can definitely argue he was in the right situation at the right time and lightning struck.  If he stayed another year at UW you'd see them as a shell of themselves, similar to TCU after they made their CFP run.

Out in the business world that's called an "noncompetition clause".  There's all manner of litigation about that issue.  In my community, Eugene, a doctor with a noncompete clause can quit his job with the medical group, move more than 50 miles away for a year, and then return and work for a competitor.

So what if the player decides to leave the school anyway, and another school agrees to accept him.  Who's going to enforce that circumstance?  My limited experience with NLRB cases is that they don't move real quickly.

The FTC is now proposing to ban non-compete clauses entirely from all workplaces.

Utah and OSU created huge problems for DM. I suppose both defenses would have created problems for true freshman QBs.

The obvious concerns are his 9 ints vs. 11 TDs, and the 25 sacks the opposition were able to record.  Those are obvious red flags considering he was used sparingly a few games.

The good news is that we have the luxury of having a 5* QB on our sidelines. He has potential, but he really needs to work at his craft.

At least it sounds like the QB coach has solid material to work with. Let’s work on throwing it to the right guys and vastly improve his ability to read defenses.

Some of that was growing pains as a true freshman. But I think most of that was a terrible offensive line and an offensive scheme not designed around his strengths.

I think Will Stein will do a better job tweaking his offense fit Moore's skill set if he becomes the starter in the future.

That made watching this film like jumping between the hot tub and the ice bath. There is an incredible amount of potential here, shown off with plays of astonishing talent, immediately followed by the inevitable catastrophes when a rookie is put in a half-baked offensive design with a fraction of the necessary supporting pieces.

The talent that Moore displays from the pocket is exceptional, and he has quite possibly the highest ceiling as a passer that I’ve ever seen. I have never in my life watched a quarterback generate so much effortless power with such a quiet base. His deep downfield throws are perfectly accurate, his release is nearly instantaneous, and his windup has absolutely no grind. I could fill an article three times this length with jaw-dropping throws; this representative sample will have to do:

Reading through the article, it sounds very much like when Mario took over and had Justin as QB.  He designed the wrong kind of offense that emphasized the run game and not the elite passer he had right in front of him.  The one difference is that Mario was able to recruit and develop a competent OL, Chip could not even do that.

  8. This really is the only option that's realistic for UCLA right now given their dire financial status and dismal NIL support.  No chance a good and experienced HC will want to start with such a disadvantage, even if the location is in a recruiting hotbed.  DeShaun Foster might turn into a good HC but he's going to starting from the ground up and primarily recruiting 3* talent as he'll be routinely outbid for blue chips.  Of course that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're able to develop guys like Kyle Whittingham is consistently able to.

Tony White is reportedly a candidate for UCLA's head coaching job.

Seems like the only realistic option for UCLA is to pick up someone who's never been an HC before and wants their next step in their career.  The majority of established HCs won't want to join a football program that's financially crippled and has weak NIL support.

Myself, I’ve stopped watching any pregame shows unless we’re directly involved. It’s become 3 hours of nonsense that adds nothing to my football Saturday. They could go to Tuscaloosa every week and it wouldn’t register with me.

3 hour format has jumped the shark.

Same here. I tune in 5-10 minutes before kick-off and that's about it.

Who's next at UCLA with Chip Kelly likely headed to Ohio State? Here are some of the candidates.

David Shaw would be an interesting hire. He's a solid coach who could recruit at Stanford despite the academic requirements there. I imagine those would be lower at UCLA, though the athletic department's financials being bad probably puts similar handcuffs to recruiting both players and coaches.

All have requisite size for that position...competent but not elite in my opinion.  But then again I haven't followed UCLA's defensive scheme and statistically as a team they are very good, so what do I know? 🤷‍♂️

Elsewhere on the defensive line, if this guy became available I wouldn't mind if OBD snagged him.  13 sacks last season??  Wow!
