I’m glad someone wrote an article on the coaching tree behind the offense that Coach Dillingham is going to run. I briefly mentioned the offense being descendent of the Malzahn offense in a previous article, but this really digs deeper into that. I’ll add that Morris started using the Malzahn offense when he was still coaching high school — even had Coach Malzahn come in and teach it to his staff. And then seemed to meet with Kelly before his first season at Clemson to learn a few wrinkles.

Dowdell is recruiting him to come to Oregon. Yeah, I can imagine it!

Maybe with that plan in the fold, you could get a lucrative deal from ESPN that would allow you to grab a couple Big 12 programs. But again, who knows what will happen at this point.

I’d invite SDSU and Fresno State. Keeps them in that Southern Cali TV market, and I think the on-field product could be pretty good.

I think it’s possible that they reach the goal of 80 plays per game. I definitely think tempo will be a key part of the offense, as it has been stretching back to Gus Malzahn. I think the important thing is alway efficiency. Does the offense score in 12 plays or 6. If they score, they score. If they play efficiently on offense and they score big points in half the goal plays, I don’t think anyone will care all that much.

LeSean McCoy carried it in a similar fashion! It just seems to work for some guys!

I think you’re correct there. Will probably be seeing some departures announced that coaches had already been made aware of.

We’ll also have Jordan James on scholarship. And I’m cool with five. That seems around the number we typically keep.

If you look at just the combined net rushing yards between both teams, it would seem like the RBs only rushed for 79 yards. But the college football, for some reason, still counts sacks against the rushing numbers instead of against the passing. If you take away the sacks, the RBs rushed for 153 yards on 26 carries, which is good for 5.88 yards per carry. That’s not bad for a game where passing was the emphasis.

And watching Memphis and FSU tape, the spring game wasn’t the half of it!

You can definitely call it whatever you want, I’m sure there are a bunch of different terminology used in coaching for every play. For instance, as you pointed out, Coach Aliotti called it g-series. I’m assuming he considers any play with a pulling guard in that. But did you see down-g? That’s something we’ve really never seen at Oregon. I even wrote about it a couple years back, talking about how I wanted Coach Arroyo to add it to the playbook. And they ran it a couple of times during the spring game.

That 2019 season where DJ and KT played on the same DL together was sweet. And I wish it could have been for more than that single season.

I see what you’re saying with the traditional counter movements of the RB not being present. And the thing is, not every coach does it that way. Lincoln Riley for example, doesn’t use any counter motion from the RB. He’s just using the counter blocking scheme.

Really enjoyed the article Charles! But I’m also fairly confident that this play is GH Counter. It’s not designed to act as a sweep but it can be. What I mean by that is the TE is actually reading. Because the DE squeezed like he did, it makes it virtually impossible for the pulling guard to get a good kick out that would have allowed the TE to lead inside. The TEs are taught that if it gets gummed up on the inside like that, pull to the outside. We can also see from the end zone shot that the RBs initial path is to the inside. The play is also a fantastic example of Whittington’s vision. I will say that I know of high school coaches who have made this into two plays so that the onus is on the coaches instead of making the players think about too much. But I’m college, from what I understand, it’s the same play with two options. As far as reading the backside backer, I can definitely see that being the case. They read an LB on the same run with an RPO attached for Thompson’s TD pass.

I did find something though, now that my curiosity is peaked. This article I just looked through talked about how out of ESPN, 247, Rivals and Scout, the two latter sites have camps that they sponsor. They take the camps into consideration in their ratings, where 247 and ESPN goes by tape and Coach opinion alone. So if a player doesn’t attend the camps, there’s no data and it’s reflected in their ratings.

Oh I don’t agree or disagree. The only reason I knew what I said is because I used to get mad because I’d hear we snagged a 4 star and the go to 247 and they’d have him as a 3. I’d be like, what the heck, guys.

That’s interesting because I’ve always found that the players I look at on Rivals have been given better rankings than on other sites. So I honestly would have never thought that it’s more difficult to qualify for a higher rating with them.

Not only has Kyler Kasper committed to Oregon but he is also reclassifying to the 2022 class. The two positions of need on offense, RB and WR, have really been filled out in this class. Through scholarship guys and PWOs who would good enough to have scholarship offers elsewhere. The staff also have used PWOs to fill out the QB room nicely.

Haha I’ll accept that when they’re a finalist for anything.
