Mari(o) is now 12-13 at Miami. If Miami doesn't challenge for the ACC title this season, we could see a lot more players leaving the U. And maybe Mari(o) too. Manny Diaz, now the HC at Duke, was more successful as Miami's HC at half the money if that.

    But Mario wins at recruiting!

The fans are going to LOVE him until September rolls around. Then be underwhelmed and then frustrated and then angry at a season of lost opportunities.

As Duck fans that's how most of us felt.

Mario wins the off season. He gets big recruits, and improves his coaching roster (on paper) and it feels like everything is in place for something big.

And then it falls apart on game day.

Glad we have Lanning is all I can say!

  2. What is clear is that Lanning has gotten more out of the offensive lineman he inherited.

But the reality is that in two years Lanning gutted the roster of the vast majority of the Cristo al talent and it is almost all gone now.

There was a post I made months ago on FishDuck that I brokedown what is left from the Cristo al roster and there aren't many.

I think Tightened has the most players who were recruited by MC at this point.

The offensive line has completely turned over with JPJ being the only MC recruit who started last year.

Receiver had Franklin who has departed for the NFL.

No quarterbacks or runningbacks from the MC era left after the first year or Lanning.

Then the defense received a MASSIVE overhaul after Lanning's first year. Only a handful of players at best are left in the rotation on defense. The only two I can think of right now are Donte Manning and Kenyon Ware Hudson.

    Interesting Report coming out:

Oregon has reached out to former Georgia RB Andrew Paul

Andrew Paul, an exciting running back for the Georgia Bulldogs, has decided to enter the transfer portal, and the Oregon Ducks have reportedly reached out to the intriguing prospect. Paul has three years of eligibility remaining.

According to a report from On3’s Steve Wiltfong, the Ducks are one of many teams who have contacted Paul since he announced that he is leaving Georgia.

During his initial recruitment, the Ducks went hard to bring Paul to Eugene. In early 2022, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning and former RBs coach Carlos Locklyn took an in-home visit with Paul after he rushed for 2600+ yards and 40+ TDs in his senior year of high school.

Per a report, the Ducks have reached out to former Georgia RB Andrew Paul.

Runningback is not a position I felt Oregon wanted to pursue.

Although, I have noticed fewer fans stand up for the song at the football games. Perhaps our alumni are standing in line trying to get a beer.

Probably because the Kelly-Helfrich years made standing exhausting from Oregon scoring so often.

David, I thought the "we don't pay players" was an obvious reference to fanspeak - not actually anything to do with what is allowed.

"We" make our guys go to class.  "We" only offer scholarships to real students.  "We"...etc, etc.

I missed that reference in that case.

I keep running into folks who don't understand how NIL works. Or works legally or theoretically as the NIL landscape keeps shifting in terms of what is and isn't allowed.

And I think I often run into Beaver fans who don't understand how this whole NIL thing works too. The reality for Beaver fans is they are already a farm program... They will recruit and develop top talent that will be scooped up by B1G and SEC teams and their players who aren't tier 1 level but aren't G5 will go thr Big 12.

$400,000.00 'from' Oregon State? That's tough for me to get my arms around. A lot to pay to be the champion of the Pac-2.

That's pay to try and keep the Breavs relevant (at least by their status quo standards) for another year.

Oregon State's NIL groups are going to throw as much money as they can at the team in the next few years I feel. If the Beavs can make the playoff they may be able to get themselves into a real conference.

Will it work? I kind of doubt it... But I think that's their only play.

NIL is paid by a 3rd party(ies) who do not belong to the institution the player is playing at.

Coaches have no control, and they're not even supposed to have knowledge, of how NIL is paid.

If a coach or someone from the university actually pays players directly that is a violation.

The reality is that every coach knows their NIL budget and talks to their NIL collectives about how to direct the resources. But coaches aren't supposed to be involved.

    Gonna be a bidding war!

    To answer your question...

Would I like him? Yes ... But no where near enough to warrant a bidding war. Oregon is loaded at runningback and if I was balancing the NIL books right now I would want to use that money elsewhere.

(again coaches do not do this as it is a 3rd party but coaches also have an idea of their "Budget")

Hopefully nobody follows him in the portal. He recruited a lot of our younger/transfer skill position guys

There might be a couple guys on the ASU roster Lanning and co would be interested in... But the reality is that the way Lanning runs the program has us always flirting with scholarship cap.

Some players will leave Oregon in the spring portal and I'm sure Lanning will look to grab a couple from elsewhere... But Oregon doesn't have the space, need or desire to gut the ASU roster.

I think ASU fans are afraid of us killing their roster but that isn't going to happen. Someone else might do it but not Oregon.

The curious part of me wonders why he 'chose' to be a passing game coordinator at a losing college over his Los Angeles Rams running back coach position.  Hmmm.

Chance to get into the college game.

And passing game coordinator is a step up from a RB coach if your desire is to be an OC or HC some day.

My guess is that it is a bit of both.

Though I will say this... ASU may have been one of the worst teams in the PAC last year but their offense was at times darn creative. They did some crazy stuff on a regular basis that allowed them to punch above their talent.

Part of that is Dilly... But I'm sure Samples had some ideas in there too. Don't forget probably the most dangerous passer on ASU's roster last year for big plays was probably their runningback.

Speed training has been more common in soccer.   A lot of it has to do with body posture.   Does the training have impact?   Think about two evenly matched players - one a wide receiver and one a DB - what if the WR's speed training allows him to have a shoulder in front of the DB as an incoming pass arrives?  Or, zig zag speed training to quickly change direction?  A lot of it is improving on natural speed with agility speed.  Though, posture such as leaning forward rather than running upright can improve "speed."  As can higher knee action.  Arm action can improve speed.  How much of the surface of the foot touches can change speed.  Aerobic training.  Muscle relaxation.  Repeating drills enough that it becomes more natural.

I presume body posture can also impact the speed with which a linebacker pursues?   Can a ball carrier hit a hole faster based on width of steps?   And, so on.  A lot of this stuff is in very short time increments, but like the micro-speed to get shoulder position vs a DB, it can be impactful.

Speed training wouldn't help the vast majority of humans have any noticable difference in speed. It's really about doing every little thing right to get some incremental gains that only help against athletes who have similar raw ability.

  12. With receiver coaching experience that helps the runningback position as well. Gotta catch balls out of the backfield to be an effective back these days.

Beyond that I can't help but think Samples would also be a good hire if the Ducks lose Adams at some point. They did renew Adam's contract for only a year. It gives Lanning flexibility potentially down the road with his coaching staff.

I thought Michigan stopped sending spies out to their fellow Big Ten schools?  Just when you thought it was safe to come out to practice 😱   Or, maybe Michigan just wanting to send Oregon a gift welcoming us to the Big Ten neighborhood.

If say it's their mascot but Michigan doesn't have a mascot because they feel a mascot is beneath them.

In particular you see the stunning amount of talent in the first article linked above. But I gotta ask...."is a dime defense that right call for the B1G?"  Aren't they a ground-and-pound conference, and proud of it?

If that front seven is putting opposing teams on very long third downs.

Throw out the Dime package and challenge them to try and pass it.

I don't think anyone anticipates it being used as the base defense but something situational.

Also remember... USC, Washington, UCLA, Ohio State and Maryland are all in the B1G and all of those schools have relied on a passing attack in recent history.

And with a 12 team playoff there is no guarantee the Ducks play a run-heavy team and might play a heavy passing offense. So best to have this package in the back pocket.

So…the media revenue for LAST year was 37 million?  And ESPN offered only 30 million for FUTURE years is all?  Apple offered only 22 million?

Everybody wanted to hose the Pac 12, and ignore actual value. Receiving 49 million a year for the next 10 years plus the revenue from all the bonuses that come with being in the Big Ten, is not just a wise business move, it was essential for our survival.

    Bastards.

    FISHDUCK.COM

FOX and Disney/ESPN control virtually all of college sports. The Pac-12 has failed to make a deal with either of...

oh yeah the rigged it to kill a conference.

I probably need to go back and add an update that the Pac-12 foolishly turned down a single offer from ESPN ... But I think it only highlights even more how the media giants wanted the conference dead and pulled apart for the pieces.

Adams, whose previous contract included a $650,000 salary through January 2025, signed an extension last week that keeps...

Junior Adams has done wonders with Oregon's receivers since joining the staff. The Cristobal years actively hurt that room and now it is flourishing with more talent than I think any of us truly understand. So it's no wonder that Adams got an extension and a raise but what is interesting is that it's just for one season. Maybe I'm missing something because the only article that seems to go into this is the Oregonlive article linked above, which has a paywall, of which I am not paying for but typically their articles just review the contract itself and not the rational behind them.

Could Adams be on the move after next season? Or is he just signing something short term to keep his options open? Or is Lanning only wanting to retain him for a season to keep his options open?

What I do know is that pretty much all the assistant coaches had to sign extensions this off season because either Lanning or Mullens or both had them sign only two year contracts initially. This is also why Coach Martin was able to move to MSU without a buyout because his contract expired and he opted not to renew with Oregon and head off to Michigan State instead.

But what is odd is that this contract extension is only for one year. Two or more with Adams' proven track record at Oregon to date would make far more sense if all parties were planning on sticking around for the long haul.

    Anyways... food for thought.

I watched a segment earlier today where Barkley was filling out his bracket.  He picked Oregon to get to the Final Four and advance to the Championship Game but lose to Arizona.

I know I know, it’s Barkley.  But still kinda cool.  Yes he seems to be picking longer shots, but he does know some ball.

If Oregon faces Zona in the championship I like our chances.
