This is a great example of how Lanning recruited the best he could--getting superb quality, but in the next years improving upon it even more. Well, that and bringing in a safety via the portal puts a freshman even lower on the roster. I feel for the coaches with all the time spent recruiting these players, the time spent coaching them--and they leave. Yet this is what building a higher quality program looks like--a Georgia model for sure. Still, it makes me wince.

Are these valid rankings? There is been much written about how schools game the system, and many more reasons for pause.

Duck Baseball: 4/18/23 @ Portland (Ducks LOSE 10-9)

A punch in the gut. They really got to the good relievers we have, and blew up Mollerus like never before. -

What Does Coach Stein Mean by “Plays Are Overrated”?
Charles Fischer replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Over time, there are many narratives that are forgotten or invented about a game eight years ago. One benefit to having this site and doing some analysis myself, (and still having my marbles) is being able to pull up what really happened in a game. The play below was perfectly schemed for our defense, and a close game in the first half--got ugly by the end of the game because of it. And that bastard Urban Meyer purposely held back this play until the second half as he knew we were good at halftime adjustments. This is an example of fantastic play-scheme planning, and superb in-game tactics along with play-calling of which beat a good Oregon team. A prime example of how "plays" makes the difference over "players." An Ohio State Dagger to Oregon: The Counter Play FISHDUCK.COM This is an analysis of the Counter play that Ohio State used to defeat Oregon with in the college National Championship game. BTW...above is one of the most read articles in the 6,000 article history of FishDuck between Oregon fans, but in particular Ohio State fans lapped it up. I was fair in my analysis, and they appreciated that and opportunity to learn. -
The Coach Debate: Dan Lanning vs. Kalen DeBoer

Make that three, IMHO. What has been done in Salt Lake City with underwhelming recruiting classes is also amazing. We have a ton of great coaches in the Pac-12... -
What Does Coach Stein Mean by “Plays Are Overrated”?
Charles Fischer replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I enjoyed the article, but this is one time I disagree with my friend and writing colleague. He beat me to writing about this topic, but it turns out we have a different perspective on it--good. I'll give my take on this quote and a few other questionable lines by Coach Stein when my writing turn comes up next time on the schedule. This is a good topic to debate--love it and thanks David! -
The Coach Debate: Dan Lanning vs. Kalen DeBoer
Charles Fischer replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I hope so as well, because Oregon had 44 players who were 4/5-Stars at the time, and Fresno had ONE. That is damn good coaching... (Makes me want to hurl writing that) -
And Oregon is No. 6 in the nation for Strength-of-Schedule, and No. 14 in RPI! If the Ducks can keep this up--hosting an NCAA Regional is possible. More about how our schedule matches up with the other conference contenders later in the week... Ceballos, Stoffal Earn Weekly Honors EUGENE, Ore. – Following a 4-1 week and a series win over No. 7 Stanford, Sabin Ceballos and Jace Stoffal both claimed weekly awards on Monday. Ceballos (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico / Puerto Rico Baseball HS Academy / San Jacinto CC) is one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of the Week, while Stoffal (Roseburg, Ore. / Roseburg HS / Umpqua CC) claimed his second consecutive Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor. Stoffal picked up the honor after tossing a complete game shutout against the Cardinal, who entered the weekend as the Pac-12’s top scoring team, on Friday. Stoffal allowed just three hits in the outing while matching a career high with nine strikeouts. After allowing a leadoff single, the junior right-hander proceeded to retire the next 13 batters he faced before allowing a single and a walk in the fifth. Stoffal pitched out of the one-out jam that inning and then put down the next 11 batters in order before giving up a leadoff single in the ninth. He retired the final three batters in the ninth, the final two on strikeouts. Stoffal joins a small group of Pac-12 pitchers who have claimed back-to-back weekly honors. He is the 30th pitcher to go back-to-back on the award since 1986 and just the second Ducks’ pitcher (Alex Keudell – 2012). Two pitchers have won the honor four consecutive weeks (Sean Rees – Arizona State – 1990; Tim Lincicome – Washington – 2006) and three have won it back-to-back-to-back weeks (Alex Sanchez – UCLA – 1986; Travis Willis – California – 1989; Trevor Bauer – UCLA – 2011). Ceballos earned the Collegiate Baseball national honor after leading the Ducks to two midweek wins over San Francisco and a series win over Stanford. In five games, the Ducks’ third baseman batted .368 (7-for-19) with three home runs, a triple, 11 RBI and four runs scored. He reached base at a .429 clip while slugging .947. Ceballos also played flawless defense at third, handling 14 chances without an error. In the Stanford series, he led the team batting .417 (5-for-12) with two home runs, a triple, six RBI and three runs scored. He slugged 1.083 against the Cardinal and had a 1.500 OPS. Against San Francisco, Ceballos belted a home run and had five RBI in two games. All-Time Pac-12 Conference Pitchers of the Week • Jace Stoffal (4/17/23; 4/10/23) • Matt Dallas (3/20/23) • Robert Ahlstrom (5/10/21; 4/13/21; 3/15/21) • Cullen Kafka (3/23/21) • Kenyon Yovan (4/30/18; 4/2/18) • Parker Kelly (3/12/18) • David Peterson (5/1/17; 4/3/17; 2/14/17) • Conor Harber (2/23/15) • Tommy Thorpe (3/24/14) • Cole Irvin (3/13/13; 4/1/13) • Alex Keudell (4/16/12; 4/9/12) • Jimmie Sherfy (2/21/12) • Madison Boer (2/22/11) • Justin LaTempa (5/3/10) All-Time Collegiate Baseball Players of the Week • Sabin Ceballos (4/17/23) • Tanner Smith (3/27/23) • Josiah Cromwick (2/20/23) • Brett Walker (4/5/21) • Kenyon Yovan (3/8/21) • Spencer Steer (4/15/19) • Kenyon Yovan (4/30/18) • Parker Kelly (3/12/18) • David Peterson (5/1/17) • David Peterson (3/13/17) • David Peterson (3/7/17) • Cole Irvin (5/2/16) • David Peterson (3/6/16) • Shaun Chase (5/5/14)

The article link will not publish an article box in a forum post, but you can go to it this way. Pretty sparse article, with not a lot of analysis, but I think he makes some good points and is fair. Some think Washington got some lucky breaks this year to get to 11 wins....like not playing USC or Utah. And only because Smith at OSU eschewed the Field Goal, and our OC called a boneheaded play to injure our star QB did UW beat the Oregon teams. DeBoer's experience did prevail in those, but for how long? And the Huskies being No. 24 in 2023 for recruiting, and No. 59 thus far in 2024 is not going to cut it long term, IMHO. Your thoughts?

N'Faly Dante Announces Return for 2023 Season with the Ducks
Charles Fischer replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
There were a number of games where he dominated this last year, and I cannot imagine his intensity won't be at a much higher level this year. Dana's most important "recruit" for one year? Whew! Oregon fans after his announcement... -
Two points... 1) Yes SC cheats, but so does most of the SEC, the other elite teams, etc. Yet Oregon will prosper and is doing fine under Dan Lanning. For 2024 recruiting, the Ducks are currently ranked No. 10 while USC is No. 68 and again...the Ducks were in the top ten in 2023. We will do fine versus their cheating, and discussing tampering ad infinitum doesn't change anything. 2) It won't be long before we can tell the B1G that concerning USC...

The Oregon Ducks Offense: Will Stein’s Insert Iso
Charles Fischer replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I love the ISO play, as it turns a TE effectively into a fullback--or a trapping guard! Fun for all and THANKS. -

A Pretty Incredible Two Days for Our Beloved Ducks...
Charles Fischer replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Well, they (RJ Gordon and Isaac Ayon) have not even played yet. I wrote of this in prior Baseball threads--of how Waz had to make-do with Freshmen, and while inconsistent as freshmen will be--have helped Oregon a ton. Speaking of which--we start freshman Leo Uelmen at noon today on the hill... The good news I wrote of is the amazing development of the veterans who began to come on late last season, (Stoffal and Mercado) and have overcome some bumps along the way. (Like giving up 10 runs in two innings at Arizona!) Buy stock in Oregon Baseball--there is a high upside.... -
A Pretty Incredible Two Days for Our Beloved Ducks...

Agreed. It is an interesting item to ponder, but has nothing to do with the amazing last two days of Oregon Baseball. -
A Pretty Incredible Two Days for Our Beloved Ducks...
Charles Fischer replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
“North” teams have not won a Baseball ‘Natty in 30 years, and the exception was Oregon State. And the LA schools won’t be in the sunshine as much, no doubt. Traveling back east for a full three-game series will be a full travel day both directions. But they and everyone (including us) would do it for the money. -
Stanford was leading the league in wins, and has arguably the most potent scoring offense. Yet they have only scored ONE run in two games versus Oregon pitching that has left us breathless from their effectiveness. Roseburg native Jace Stoffal held the 'Furd scoreless last night with only three hits, as this was not over five or six innings, but he went all nine innings! Then we saw Logan Mercado also go NINE innings today for the first time in his career with no relief, and yet he only gave up one run with five scattered hits. It is the darndest back-to-back games for Oregon pitching I have ever seen. And this was against the No. 8 (or No. 7) team in the nation? (4-0 win Friday) Mercado threw for 92 mph in the 9th inning after 100 pitches? The growth and development of both pitchers over the last two years is something to behold and be proud of as Oregon fans--as I am blown away. Last night our battling lineup got to a Top-100 Draft pick pitcher with a 2.58 ERA coming into the game. Today the Ducks gave the hot-shot freshman Cardinal pitcher his first college loss and the most runs ever given up. (He had an incredible 2.09 ERA coming into the game) An 8-1 win... Jacob Walsh has three homers in two games, so the Ducks have a number of candidates for Pac-12 Players/Pitchers of the Week. Whew! Great crowd, and Coach Waz has quite a luxury of being able to pull the starter on Sunday (noon) if he is not sharp out of the gate because we have the ENTIRE bullpen available! The most fresh arms ever for a third game, and if Oregon could win it--the Ducks would be square in the Pac-12 championship race. Just WOW. Logan Mercado exults...

Oregon vs Ohio State for the Spring Game? Who Says No?!?
Charles Fischer replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My view? Save the contests with the top-five teams for the Playoff! The objective of Oregon's schedule is to get to the Playoff, and we are handicapped enough with a nine game conference schedule. You can get hurt inadvertently... -
Oregon Football - OL Coach Terry on HC Dan Lanning
Charles Fischer replied to Jon Joseph's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
What Coach Terry said in the interview below is amazing from so many angles. You will learn a ton about so many areas, and yes--hearing him say those things about Dan Lanning and the objectives of the program was exciting!
